| Age: | 47 | | Background: | Though Grace’s dark roots as a metaller remain visible in her hair their musical legacy was swept away by her first visit to Club UK. Entering dressed (metaphorically at least) in black lace and crushed velvet she was to emerge hours later cleansed, repented and changed forever. Soon embracing the thrills, spills and little pills of club land she became a regular face, partying with Biko, Steve Proctor and Trevor Brown.
Every high also has a low however and its eventual closure left Grace sad and lost. Though she sought solace in Laurent Garnier style techno at Birmingham’s Atomic Jam and the rude jungle of Hastings pier’s Heat she found herself at uni in a new home devoid of musical inspiration.
Adopting the DIY aesthetic she bought her own decks and began spreading the junglist vibe to all who would listen. As it’s bouncy basslines and reggae samples gave way to the harsh, industrial sound of tech-step however she found her enthusiasm waning and returned to where it had all started in house music.
These diverse influences remain obvious in her unique sound. While its template is the four-four Grace infuses her sets with the ‘jump-up’ energy of jungle, scatterings of breakbeat and powerful, grooving basslines interspersed with classic house tracks from back in the day. While she once mourned a club’s passing she is now more likely to be instrumental in their formation and is resident at Beat Retreat and a founder member of Inhale.
