Bubbles - Review

Ahhhh... that feeling of discovering something that you'd forgotten, perhaps that you'd even forgotten you'd forgotten. The kind of party where from the moment you walk in till the moment you walk out you're bouncing on the tips of your toes, a grin stretched from ear to ear and surrounded by others having just as much fun.
While a big club will give you that large crowd atmosphere that a place like Belushi's could never capture, no matter how good the crowd at a large venue it can never have the kind of happy friendly vibe that a small, intimate party can have. Bubbles really took us back - one of those parties where there is just no attitude, where the only thing anyone cares about is having a f*cking good time.
Belushis for those who don't know it is a nice little venue set underneath the main ground floor bar of Belushis in Borough High Street. It's low ceilinged so if you're over 6ft and jumping around too much then you need to be careful where you stand or risk a ; it has it's own separate bar at one end and plenty of space for sitting around and chatting / chilling out if you ever need it.
For us though there was probably only 5 minutes in 4 hours that we spent anywhere near a seat 'cos the music was absolutely spot on the entire night. This was a special free members party and the promoters had rolled out a nice back2back dominated lineup with DJs whipped from all over London's hard dance scene.
Bronson Vieira and Marc-E were banging it out when we arrived and we just knew that we'd taken the right decision coming along when we came in as the strains of Daniel Ro's latest track on the Peroxide label 'Jen/R/8' cranked out over the sound system. This little number is I reckon the first big tune of 2002 - OK, so it was released on promo late last year but it's only just out on full release. I heard it first at the Fridge and it set the place absolutely on fire and on the small dancefloor at Belushi's it was having the same effect - watch out for this one in the future boys and girls . The rest of their set was similarly paced, dropping in hard house classics alongside brand new tracks like Andy Farley's 'Connected' which is another cracking piece of vinyl.
Unfortunately Bubbles resident DJ Cosmic was unable to join Marc French behind the decks but as it turned out Marc played an absolutely blinding set. Perfect mixing skills, tune selection totally spot on and a big grin as each one was delivered . I think we're going to have to join the official Heat campaign to have Marc play out more often - just so you know your next chance to hear him will be at Heat on the 9th Feb.
Closing things off Simon the Fireman and Dean Peters took the music in a slightly different direction, trading Marc's uplifting house and trance for a harder, bouncier sound just in case anyone had any intentions of leaving with their calves intact. Not a style of playing that I've heard much of recently and yet again it was good to remember the kind of energy it can generate in a small venue and just get down to dancing about like a loon.
If this sounds like the sort of party that you'd enjoy then I'd recommend you get down to the next Bubbles which will be on the 9th March. Lineup is yet to be decided, but you can find out more closer to the date on the official Bubbles website.
