Slinky @ The Opera House, Bournemouth

Reported by robbie muir / Submitted 28-03-03 14:21

I saw last week on the HarderFaster message board that not many of you knew about Slinky @ The Opera House in Bournemouth – you knew about the events that Slinky put on in London etc but it doesn’t compare to the Opera House! The only down side to the weekly mind blower is the crappy 3am Licensing laws (on the odd occasion they have 4am or 6am licences). On reading the messages I thought I would contact the people at Slinky and get myself to the event a let you all know what it’s all about.

The line up had to be the best I've seen at Slinky for a while (bit of a bonus as I also hadn’t been for a long while). Headliners were Andy Farley (1st appearance at the Opera House + doing a 2hr set) and The Tidy Boys doing a 2 hr set. The club itself is kind of like Camden Palace as it has different levels and the décor is very old fashioned (in a good way – it is an old Theatre). The entrance to the club is a long red carpeted tunnel; you start to hear the sound system juddering through the soles of your shoes as you queue – so I flashed my pass and waded through the queue, as I couldn’t wait! You have loads of bars in all different areas of the club, which is handy, as you haven’t got loads of people in one area.

Because of the transport I chose I didn’t get to the club till 1055, just as Andy Farley was taking the stage (perfect timing really). I positioned myself behind the decks as Andy put his first record on, which was a re-working of Moby’s “GO” the crowd erupted. Standing at the back of the stage, was a pure buzz – 2000 people cheering like Portsmouth Fans at Fratton Park (You will know if you’ve been). People were grabbing for Andy trying to get a touch from the biggest DJ in Hard Dance today. The crowd was going full throttle as Andy put on a full display of the freshest Hard Dance / Techno tunes around at the moment and some real crowd pleasers which made my blood boil.

The Event also has a top floor Room which plays drum and bass, now back in mid 1990’s it was my 1st choice of music, I used to travel weekly to Lazerdrome in Peckam (Thy Premier Jungle event ever!). But as soon as I walked in, I walked straight out again (nothing to do with the DJs / Mc’s) it just proved how much you grow out of music through the years – but the room seemed to be going well any how. The club has seating for about 4-500 people going around the old balcony, which has a fantastic view over looking the dance floor in the main room. I must admit there were a few Geezers (Grant Mitchell types – if you know what I mean) in the club, but they didn’t cause any bother to any one.

By the time The Tidy Boys took over at 0100 everyone was in the same state of mind, arm in arm with the Slinky kids! The Tidy boys, you can’t say a bad thing against them really as they played some really good tunes and their mixing was seamless. Crowd pleasers were BK’s remix of TDV’s “I Don’t Care” – (DJ’s should play the rmx that really beats BK’s version hands down, it was played by Pete Wardman at Trade and I heard it played at various Frantic events last summer). I heard a reworking of an old Prodigy release, which the crowd really seamed to react to. All in all this is a London Club in Bournemouth and if wasn’t for the last record being played around 3am which is insane as I’m normally just getting started – I would have thought I was at Camden Palace!

The venue is 1st class and the sound system is excellent, Hats off to all at Slinky for making this a pleasure to visit and I will make sure this is a regular in my club calendar! With Ann Savage, Lisa Lashes, Jules, Tidy Boys making monthly visits with appearances from BK, Andy Farley, Signum - the list could go on and on, you're guaranteed more than one Top Hard Dance DJ every week so make sure you pay it a visit if you're near.

I went 2 TOH once, on the wrong bloody night! It reminded me of a smaller Camden. Good night, shame it wasn't Slinky though...
