Demented @ the Elektrowerkz - 30 May 2003 - Review

Reported by Dory-EE / Submitted 11-06-03 14:12

It’s stupid ‘o clock on a Friday avo. It’s 27ºC and I can’t write fast enough to get the paperwork done get on the train and go down the rabbit hole to meet talented creative enthusiastic friends who knows the true meaning and depth of FUN. Getting together to make history…or is it herstory…read on and experience the MUNTEDstory!

Friendly flyer-filled faces greet you at Angel tube station. Oh no!! Two doors. One leads to a night of music and dance and one leads to fresh timeless Hi NRG and stomping. Life’s jam-packed with choices…and extra jam, BUT just keep muttering D.E.M.E.N.T.E.D D.E.M.E.N.T.E.D D.E.M.E.N.T.E.D D.E.M.E.N.T.E.D and the ever-so helpful strong bouncers will help you through the right door! F…Yeah!!

A well-organised guest list and a warm welcome easy entry, stamped by United Colours of Tripping, and we’re in!! I LOVE small clubs, capacity 300 (350). Minimalism. Efficient cloakroom and bar staff, 1 male and 1 female bathroom, 1 dance floor, 1 bar, 1 DJ @ a time, 1 goal: Let us play:

No getting lost or loosing mates, no deciding which DJ which room where and when. All the planning has been carefully done already. I don’t think the players of this game know how much effort goes into planning a night like this. Materialising a dream, running a website, lining up DJ’s, emails, phone calls, conversations, planning, designing flyers, financing, time and timing, we’re talking setting up a business, and all YOU have to do is pitch up! Sounds unfair that the MUNTED crew works so hard and we can just enjoy it all, but trust me, they live for entertainment and entertain to live!

“One day - I woke up – and I – realise – that my mind – wasn’t mine – anymore.
I got up – and took off – the top – of my head – and I lay – my mind – on the floor.
Just then – a strange sound – made me – look around – and I – saw you – in flames – by the door.” !!

With that song DJ GOODBEE (Smile) invited me to step into and onto the dance floor (please mind the step; please the step mind; step the mind please! Whatever just get your ass inside!!

I found it a bit dark at first, maybe even a bit cold, but it was still early and empty. What caught my eye were the two transistor-type-dishy things mounted on the back wall. Quite electrifying. After careful staring, frowning, analysing and computing all the stimulus, I concluded that these used to b two innocent 60W clear TV room light bulbs from Shepherds Bush, which got infected with the Hard House Virus (HHV) and was transformed into wild colourful energetic décor in a night club in Islington!

The other walls were clothed with mad cows full of expression, and the more you look at them, the more they look through you and challenge you to dance more audaciously! So I did. With help from Resident DJ Mixomatosis, who introduced a more explosive bouncy beat, the room started growing with players, warming themselves and the dance floor up!

What time is it? Russ ‘o clock!
D-viant’s first set in London this year squirted new flavour into the night. A spontaneous energetic DJ fills the dance floor with rubber balls. I felt like FLUBBER when you played “Angel in my heart”!

Time for a cheeky confident kick ass song; and what other than “Public Affair” by Mary J Blige. I say naaaais one bruvvvverrrr!! What I enjoyed about D-viant’s style is that he spins humour into his song. Amplifying his sparkling personality through his vinyls. The Southpark song comes to mind.

I guess every true DJ give a bit of himself and exposes a part of him every time he orchestrates the decks. “It’s Beautiful”

By 1am I thought to myself: “it’s all coming together nicely”.

1:30am. Donna Birt (FRANTIC/Twisted Hard) cranked it up by adding a feminine slice of style. Clean cut toooones cutting through all six senses!! And by just looking through the crowd, you can see their bodies shine of enjoyment!

Great sound system. It handled “Discotech” (Nick Sentience) very well. I couldn’t help but give Donna the thumbs up more than once. After her set I bumped into her, err actually, I was dancing like a mad cow, pumped up from her set and she tripped over my uncontrollable foot! I apologised and when she recognised me, she said: “Are you OK? Did you like my set?”
“I like ice-cream. I’m IN love with your set!
Thank you and Happy Birthday too!

Putting the feet up a bit, emptying the bladder, filling the bottle and talking quality kak to strangers. Someone called “Richard” said that he was used to dancing to heavy rock music, so he dances in an almost aggressive style. But since he’s been introduced to hard house, he said: “you can’t fight with the music; the music always wins!”

Nicci (Nic-EE) just had one question to ask: “How come the bouncers don’t dance?”
Not even a toe tapping secretly in the dark? C’moooonnnn!!!!

I’d like to underline the quality of DJ’s and songs to complete the night. Danni Gilligan’s (and Ali Wilson) “Cold Shiver” is a fine example of freshness and creativity that will keep the face and sound of Hard House in fashion. An all time favourite of mine “Binary Finery” bounced off the walls when Danni put it on. Paul Reeves showed off his talent too with “Such a good feeling” and “Cheap Rent” (Karim).

With a base that tickles your nose when Skol played “48 hours” I couldn’t help but feel sad… Sad, because there were loads of people unaware of the amount of fun that can be had in one night. Loads of people that missed out on a DEMENTED night, packed with potential. It is now your duty to share the experience; after all, we are all team players of the clubbing game. In fact, what started off as a game is now becoming a lifestyle of pleasure!

I’d like to congratulate the MUNTED crew. This night has great potential and me and already so many others are excited to see you grow into THE last-Friday-of-every-month gig.
So get fit for the next episode on Friday 27 June 2003

Don’t take drugs; drink music.
