Riot! Review, 12th October 2003

Reported by Olly Perris / Submitted 21-10-03 10:14

"Riot made me hardcore!" was the enticing strapline used to promote this particular edition of the bi-weekly award-winning Riot! at The End, London. For those who have recently just extracted their head from the sand, Riot! is the insane, manic Sunday afternoon piss-up event. After recently being voted the best club in the UK by magazine Mixmag, it has a lot to live up to but delivers every single time. This event, featuring headliners Ian M, BK, Ed Real, *Ting*, Danny Gilligan and with the Ignition Crew & Guy Williams from DTPM in the funky room, was certainly no exception and in my view, Riot is now the benchmark for every hard house night in the UK to match.

For those who have never been to The End before, it's a great venue. It's fairly small in size but, as us males all know, size isn't everything (!) and the intimacy and atmosphere has yet to be matched, let alone beaten by any other venue I've been to before. Downstairs (Well, I say downstairs....about 4 steps separate the 2 levels!) is where the hard action happens and where the Riot! faithful bounce and bop away to the raging beats provided. First up at this particular event, rather oddly, was Ed Real, who was playing the warm up set before legging it to Wales to play at the huge Tidy Weekender 4. Ed, the Riot! promoter, instantly greeted us with some rampaging beats as soon as we'd walked through the door. Playing a "graveyard" set is tough for any DJ but the fact that the floor kept filling during Ed's set showed the pulling power his set had. The tunes came thick and fast, and there were some wicked new pieces thrown in for good measure, including a rather spanking 2003 Prime Mover remix of their anthem "Black Dogs", and 2 tunes off the forthcoming massive DJ Nation 4 EP. Finishing with a brand new single from Nick Rowland & Dave Wright, (who were with me on the dancefloor at the time - the fact that Dave was standing on one of the podiums shoving balloons up his top, and looking normal doing it, really goes to show the madness of the place!) Ed passed the buck over to the mighty BK, who kicked things off with a fantastic onslaught of techno. Of course, normally techno is warm up material to get your butts shaking before the hard anthems begin. But with BK at the helm playing at Riot!? nah, I don't think so either! As the bpm's increased up to about 150, the tunes were thrown at the Riot! faithful almost literally by the production genius. Tunes like Mauro Picotto's "Alchemist", a moment from the Hydraulix series and of course the obligatory DK "Murder Was The Bass" set the pace for a terrific affray of ride cymbals, shouting vocals and some of the hardest kick drums known to man! As the dance floor gathered pace, BK finished off with some more "conventional" moments such as Nil Vs Miss Tracy's "King Of House" and Base Graffiti's "The Base EP".

BK then preceded to hand over to *Ting*. Now this was the first time I'd ever seen her play before and I'm not sure if she's like this every time she plays, but the woman is an absolute human bouncing ball!!! Before her set, during the end of BK's set, *Ting* joined us all on the dancefloor and really got into the music and was dancing around all over the place! It was absolutely fantastic to see a big name DJ on the dancefloor having a great time and hyping everyone up. I managed to speak to *Ting* before her set at the bar as well, and I have to say she was amazingly down to earth and a really, really nice person. As she bounced her way into the DJ booth like a kangaroo with a butt-plug, she put on one of the best DJing performances that I've ever seen! The pure energy of her personality really shone out in her set and through the tunes she played. The selection was purely for the crowd (who almost tripled in size during her set) and the quality of the mixing was absolutely faultless. Not to mention of course, the fact that behind the decks she had enough energy to supply a small Iraqi town! She dropped a disturbingly hard collection of hoovers and euphoric trance riffs before almost blowing the roof off with Karim's "Ditch The Bitch" and "Power" (the latter being the Snap bootleg that everyone is trying to get hold of!) The insane hoovers of Ditch The Bitch led into the nasty, snarling, down-right evil synths of Ian M's "Crazy Pills", which I'm sure caused a few wet patches in peoples pants! The euphoria of Jez & Charlie's "Razors Edge" followed and some nasty acid tunes bought a fantastic set to a close. The reaction was absolutely huge to *Ting*'s set and she personified the spirit of Riot! and the vibe of the crowd. She even noticed me on my mobile phone at one point and tried to turn the music down!! (The reason why I was on the phone was so I could play the set to a mate!) Amazing stuff and a really great experience.

*Ting* handed over to Riot! regular, Danny Gilligan. Danny is a man who is never off form and always plays an absolute blinder at Riot! and his set this time round was no exception. Kicking off with some belting hard anthems (bare in mind also, that at this point the BPM was in excess of 150!) it was only a matter of time before the crowd pleasers worked their way in, and the dirt of BK's "Access" remix coupled with the euphoria of Sentience & Reynold's "Instrumental" helped to hype the huge crowd right up. But then Danny dropped in the one tune which absolutely everyone is feeling at the moment, the absolutely gargantuan Nick Sentience remix of Faithless's "We Come One". When the Faithless riff kicked in, the cheers and whistles which preceeded it almost drowned out the tune itself. Every single arm was aloft, reaching for the strobes (which were doing over-time to this tune) and a hoard of people came running from the funky dance floor down onto the harder one. The reaction was absolutely enormous and got every single person smiling and jumping like a loon. It's simply one of the best remixes ever in my view and is going to be absolutely huge when it comes out soon! (through Progression Records) The smiles on everyones faces were firmly held on by another massive Nick Sentience remix, this time of Paul Glazby's uber-anthem "Hostile", and then the ultimate Riot! crowd pleaser, 99th Elevators "Hooked" sent the dancefloor into perpetual frenzy. Danny played an absolutely blinding set which concluded with future anthems including the huge Organ Donors "Looking For Drugs".

Up in the funky room, the sexy ass-shaking at the bar, which is slowly becoming a bit of a trademark, was in full flow. Bar Riot (the name for the room) has a terrific intimate, sexy atmosphere and you can really let yourself go on the dancefloor and fit right in! The music was initially supplied by a very cool looking Matt Williams (complete with shades and all, very groovy!) who grooved our minds with some tripped out electro and some brilliant funky house. Matt handed off to the rest of the Ignition Crew, who carried on much of the same theme, really getting the crowd into the grooves and making everyone lose control of their rear ends, before special guest Guy Williams from DTPM funked us all up, sexed us all up (no government intervention necessary) and then really got our heads down with some brilliant, energetic funky flavours.

Now, I do unfortunately have a confession to make. Owing to the train company deciding to carry out "essential engineering work" (which I later discovered amounted to tree-trimming!!) I had to leave early to get to Waterloo for my last train home, which means I missed the end of Danny Gilligan's 3 and a half hour marathon set. Ian M unfortunately could not turn up to the event - he broke down on the M6 on the way from the Tidy Weekender!! - Unfortunate indeed, but reports of the night from the forums have shown that Danny seemed to rise to the task of covering for Ian M extremely well!!!
Another Riot! passed by leaving a great legacy. Even if you live in the most northern part of England, there is simply no excuse for missing Riot! The doors open at 3pm and close at 10pm, giving you ample time to get to London in the morning for it, and then getting a late train home. I "commute" from Southampton every time to get there and there were people from Birmingham and Leeds there on sunday. Saying "I don't live in London" is no excuse! Shame on you! I urge everyone to check out this club because satisfaction is 500% guaranteed and you will have an amazing night. There's never any trouble with violence or rowdy behaviour, everyone is ridiculously friendly and the feel-good factor of the club is incredible. Riot! is slowly taking over people, you have been warned....

PS: The next Riot! see's L'oreal's worst nightmare Yoji Biomehanika grace the decks at The End....now, we all know how hard Yoji normally is....put him at Riot! and you are going to get the biggest ever ear-bashing of your life - rest assured, he WILL hammer the tongs out of the Thunder Ridge soundsystem! Joining the Japanese one will be BK, Danny Gilligan & the other usual suspects. The madness takes place on the 26th October @ The End, WC1, London. Be there or be square, dude!

With thanks to boshmaster for the use of his photos Thumbs up
