Freeformation @ The Purple Turtle - Review

The first time I was plugged in (via a walkman in a friend’s parents’ utility room in Essex) to the world of speeding acid noises, heart-racing, galloping beats and uplifting hard tranciness with a hardcore/hard dance foundation that is freeform, my ears pricked up, my face split into a massive grin, and I knew I had to get more freeform into my life.
Judging by the sprawling queue camped outside the Purple Turtle on Saturday night, it’s not just me who’s fallen in love with the infectious enthusiasm encapsulated in this delicious genre. The colourful line of up-for-it clubbers were all waiting patiently in the nipple-tweaking October wind to get onto the dancefloor and celebrate the launch of Freeformation, a series of free parties cooked up by the Nu Energy Collective to satisfy the appetites of a hungry London crowd. There’s no question that the Nu Energy Collective, base camp of all things freeform, hardcore, trancecore and generally banging, are pretty much responsible for making London more bouncy over recent months, and for bringing enthusiasm back to a slightly bedraggled scene. Fuelled by the popularity of the live shows and Nu Energy DJs’ sets at Logic, Frantic, Atomic Energy, Oblivion, Afterlife, Regenerate and Pendragon, the Nu Energy sound has become an integral part of the hard dance franchise.
The party’s back-to-back line up was enough to have any fan frothing at the mouth; Nu Energy founder Kevin Energy up against lady of the moment, *Ting*; hardcore legend, MC and DJ Sharkey with Impact; lethal combo Matt Style and Andy Vinal; De-Cent and Rubec; AMS and Dan Devotion, plus a breakbeat set from scene pioneer Robbie Long, and the delectable Joanna McEwen. Sure enough, not long after the doors had opened at 7pm, the place was ram-jammed with smiling faces, slipping around to the increasingly rapid beats on an ever-more soggy floor, as arms flailed and lager flew, and scenes of Simon Mayo dishing out singles at the Radio One Road Show were revisited as Nu Energy’s beautiful assistant Andy Vinal clambered onto the stage to dish out endless free tunes to the crowd.
The venue was perfect for this sort of event – colourful, intimate, lovely staff and a cheap bar. All the sets were splendid, and probably torturous for those poor sods stuck outside who turned up too late yet refused to head home, praying that a few people would fuck off so they could get in. Not bloody likely. I missed the start of the night due to ‘passenger action on the Northern Line’ (grrrr), but Dan Devotion impressed with a flawless set, and Matt Style and Andy Vinal had the room leaping like crazy salmon to their hard house-edged tracks and silly antics. The moment that had me rolling round the floor with glee came as *Ting* and Kevin Energy hauled their big bags up the ladder to the DJ box accompanied by Sharkey. The man is a hardcore legend, worshipped by legions of crazy ravers, equipped with a set of lungs and vocal chords capable of bellowing at a whole warehouse full of nutters. To have him crammed in the Turtle’s tiny box with Kevin, our gal *Ting* and a microphone was a treat indeed. Sharkey and Impact then rocked the place ‘til 2am, and their closing set was just the thing to whip up the crowd like a sock in a spin dryer until the lights went up, and the sweaty Turtle massive staggered, dazed and blinking into the night, in search of somewhere to continue the having it.
After the success of this event, there is little doubt that the next party will go off double hard. Recommendations for those planning to attend the next Freeformation:
- Turn up early
- Bring a big bag for all the free vinyl
- Don’t forget your hardcore wellies
