Interview with JP & Danny D (HQ, Dance Valley, Impulz)

Reported by Olly Perris / Submitted 24-02-04 10:35

We often see in the dance music press a lot of coverage about the Dutch hard dance scene, although many of the biggest DJs in Holland are not given the exposure in the UK which they so rightly deserve. People such as Tom Harding, a Christ-like character in Holland, are perhaps passed up by the dance music media in favour of home-grown talent. This is obviously grossly unfair to the biggest DJs in Holland who would like exposure in the UK, arguably the home of dance music. 2 of these names are Danny D and JP, 2 awesome Dutch DJ's with real ambition here in Blighty. Danny D really smashed it up last year with a unique funky hard sound, whilst JP continues to smash out right across the hard dance spectrum. As Riot! prepares to house these guys on the 29th February at The End, London, it's about time these goliath DJ's were exposed to the British public so we can see just how big they actually are...

1) The Dance Valley organisation is the biggest rave production company in the world. What events does the company run and can you tell us some more about them? (Size, venues, music styles, headline DJ's, mind-blowing facts; size of the sound system etc!)

Impulz; There’s 3 impulz’s a year, 2 indoor (25000) and the outdoor capacity was 40,000 last year. Underworld headlined the mainstage, HQ had a huge tent for 9000 people. The location of the impulz outdoor, is on a lake which is very cool indeed

4 Elements; 14000 people, 4 areas techno, club, chill and again massive hq area!!!!

HQ; where do I begin!! Hq is held every month in the melkweg a great venue which usely has concerts from robie Williams and nerd. It holds 1800 people, it sold almost every time over the last ten years. HQ is the club lauched hardhouse in a big way here in Holland, Tom harding was the main reason for this in beginning of hq by just banging it out every month and the crowd loved it!! Soon aftrer that hq became more or less pure hardhouse night with most Of the other djs following tom down the hardhouse path. There is not one major hardhouse dj who has played at hq!!! tom,jp and myself have see some mental clubs and parties in our time, but nothing comes close to the magic that happens at hq every month!!! We also do hq on tour all over the world and hqxl which just one room for 10000 people to rave to hardhouse in a purpose built venue! The last hqxl all the djs played back 2 back!! It was insane and jp and tom played together on 2 pairs of 3 decks

2) What are your favourite memories of playing at these parties?

Danny: Just seeing it all come together, when you see many people getting off on the music that you love as well, playing at these parties is just mental, that’s it

JP: I've played all the dance valleys and it started off very small (8000 att.) but also very intimate after the first DV we knew that this was only getting bigger and bigger (and it did!) So the first DV was very special to me and also the one where we got our own open air stage in our own little valley for the first time, this was also the biggest DV ever (100000 att.!!)this was a mindblowing experience for all of us. And of course recording my live cd at Impulz in a room for 15000 people, this was quite scary but once I got started it all went very well and it became one of my best memories with excellent response from the crowd!!

3) Who have been your favourite guest DJ sets at these parties?

Danny: Last year the organ donors done very well for us at dv on after dana (shes huge here), also steve hill done very well at dv. Proteus and Ed Real at last impulz also made a Huge impact.hq wise, At hq the last riot edtion went down a storm with jon and ed was a real rebel rave night and it was mental!! Glazby done very well for us as well last year at hq

JP: first DV: Dave Randall (second DV he played mainstage with a wrist he had broken just before he had to get started!!
Tony de Vit at HQ
Captain Tinrib Live show at HQ (he built an entire boat on stage!!)
Farley time at HQ
Simon Eve at HQ technically and musically very surprising!!
The advent (when they were still with two of them) live at DV/HQ
Zion Train live at DV
Lab 4 at Impulz outdoor (nighttime festival)
Carl Cox at DV (big man big smile big mixing... chilling moments!)
In the 10 years we've been running there are too many names and moments to remember but HQ and DV never would have been so exciting wth the help and support of our national and international quests!! You know who you are!! Here also a few names who helped creating HQ and DV to what it is today:
Steve Hill, Paul Glazby, Ed Real,Energy Dai, BK, Nick Sentience, Organ Donors

4) Danny, you have already played at Riot! last year, did you enjoy yourself?

Fuck me yes!!!! It was my first gig in london and I was a bit shaky playing, it was the first time in 4 years I did not play on a pionner mixer! But the clubbers were so dam good and the vibe they create was intense! That sound system jesus Christ!! Had jon rundell telling me "it can go harder, turn it up" we don,t have sound sytems like that in clubs here in Holland! So crisp and clear. I have been on about it to jp for months. Got to play loads of stuff that was fresh to the uk , the marco v remix of loops and things was three days old at the time, people were Asking what was that tune !!! I have his new remix of the same track for this riot. I hope they get the pionner 600 installed this time!!!!

5) The Riot! crew recently went and performed at the last HQ Riot! Edition at the legendary Melkweg in Amsterdam. What was the reaction to their sound and style?

Reaction to the style? Well it was great a lot of the hq public knew jon rundells sound from a few months back at hq and he was one of the few djs who had slighty more techy angle (raw etc) but still hard and fast, the hq public liked his sound very much they where asking for him back soon. Ed played impulz for us in dec and the crowd loved it. So when we put the line up on the hq webpage we all knew what the reactions would be. The night it self was fantastic. Ed and jon really laid down the law in the true riot fashion. There was video footage shot that night that is sure to come out soon!
The reactions were very positive indeed, it was a real nice night and there will be an other hq vs riot this year!!

6) Dance Valley events have always supported the UK hard dance sound by booking the best UK DJ's and live acts. Over the years, who have turned in the most memorable sets and do you have any funny stories?

Danny: Public domain!!! Why they had the hit record with that bass for your face sample in it we had them over a live performance at dance valley. They came on stage and where approaching the second to last number, which was there huge hit single with the "bass for your face for London sample" . now you would thinkn the mc would change the lyrics to "bass for your face …. Dance valley, Amsterdam Holland, Netherlands but no the idiot just started shouting bass for your face London about a 100 times!!! Now 1 or 2 times I understand but when you have 40000!! Hardhouse ravers in front of you on the biggest party on earth you expect more, the dutch public did! They started boo them. That’s the worse story! But here some short ones. Dave randall (dance valley legend btw) broke his arm at dv, bk had his records stolen from back stage were all mini nightmares they happened after they had played!!

JP:Like I mentioned before there are many, but it's always been a pleasure to witness the reactions from the established UK dj's towards the size of our productions and the response of the Dutch crowd to their performance (it always blew them away!!)

7) JP, you have played many times for Frantic in London. Are you looking forward to returning to play in London on the 29th?

JP:All the times I've had the privilege to come to London to play; the crowds reaction was phenomenal and every time the UK club scene blew me away. Can't wait to get back!!

8) Can we also get a current Top 5 tunes which are doing it for you at the moment?

Danny:
The project - meltdown (bk and dave randall remix)
Nrg - never lost his hardcore (nick sentience)
Marco V 'Loops n Tings' unreleased remix
Organ donors - title uknown
Derb - under ground
Dark by design remix of legend b lost in love
Dave joy - first impression (dark by design remix)

JP:
Top 5
Organ donors - Rhythm Devine
Dark by Design - Blackout
Thomas Rubin - Cold Night
DJ Wag - Music Non Stop
