Slinky regular Guy Ornadel is definitely not your average DJ. During the week he runs management company Ornadel Management where he looks after the publishing and recording rights of Sasha, Steve Lawler, Sander Kleinenberg and Charlie May and at the weekend jets around the globe to fulfil his international DJ bookings. As well as spinning deeper, progressive beats Guy’s trademark combination of Dutch trance and German hard trancers keeps dance floors packed from start to finish when he's behind the decks.
You’re playing your first Wildchild event on 30th May, when they battle it out with Slinky @ Heaven. What have your heard about Wildchild and are you looking forward to your debut performance there?
I’ve only heard that Wildchild is a great London show so it could get messy when the two clash!
What can we expect to hear you tearing the place apart with, and is there any one tune that you particularly think will take the roof off?
With new tracks from Marco V, Tiesto and some German stompers I feel ready for battle.
You’ve played a lot for Slinky over the years, even mixing an international compilation for them, so it seems fitting that you make your debut at Wildchild Vs Slinky. Has there been a highlight of being involved with Slinky?
Mixing the CD for Slinky was a great project and gave me the ability showcase my music to clubbers around the world. I still talk to clubbers about tracks that were on there. But if you want to talk about highlights then you’d need to go back a few years when Slinky used to do an Arena at Homelands. I can remember having some amazing moments playing to a packed tent on a sunny day..
You don’t play that much in the capital, is that because you prefer to play a select few, or you prefer other parts of the country?
I’ve never been about playing lots of gigs but rather just play at great parties. I’ve always like The Gallery, Peach, The Cross, Heaven and even MOS (when they did Future). In fact if you think about it, London’s got a great club scene happening again. In the past it was always the Northern Clubs like Cream and Gatecrasher….but these days maybe London’s got the crown again??
You play to a lot of international crowds in a lot of different countries. Where have been so far this year?
Lithuania really blew me away recently. It’s a rapidly developing country but you can almost feel the Communist influence from days gone by. The Club turned out to be really high end with a great crowd. We ended up in a house in a forest with a convoy of cars dancing round some guys living room to a speaker about 5 ft high!
Where is the current hot spot at the moment?
Inside Out in Scotland?
Do you have a particular favourite out of all the countries you been to throughout your career?
Tough one. Toronto in Canada would have to be one but also Japan, New Zealand and Cyprus made a really big impression on me. Playing music to people in any country still leaves me with an amazing feeling of happiness.
You have a successful management company dealing with a lot of writers and producers. Do you produce any material?
I know it’s probably held back my DJ career by not going into the studio but there’s just not enough time to do everything. I’m really happy with the way the management company and agency is going so I’ve resolved myself to just Djing.
Will you be returning to Ibiza for you summer spell at Cream @ Amnesia?
I think I’m doing a couple of dates but I think they’ve gone with longer sets from PVD and Tiesto this year. Can’t argue with that really. I have many, many, MANY good memories though with the sun coming into the club at 7am on a Thrs/Fri morning banging out trance wondering if life really got any better.
When did you start coming to the Island, and how does it compare to what Ibiza is like now?
The first time I went was probably around 1990. The clubs weren’t really full then but I’ve been going pretty much every year and although each year has been different, I can honestly say I’ve had a great time every year. How can you not? The weather, the clubs, the food (if you know where you’re eating), the beaches – Ibiza will always be a great place to go.
What do you have planned for the rest of the year?
I’m looking forward to getting back out to Singapore, Australia and Japan in October and as many good nights in between as I can experience. You only live once…
Where do you intend to spend NYE, any tips for top parties or is too early to say?!
NY eve in May? Are you mad or just a Wildchild??!!
