As Above, So Below: it all comes together at Atomic Energy’s 6th Birthday

Reported by spacekitten / Submitted 26-01-05 19:32

If Captain Tinrib and Alex Calver were coming to my birthday party I’d be pretty damn excited. Throw in the likes of Group 185, Eryk Orpheus, Kevin Energy, Mark Ashley, Marc Johnson, Kristian and Fordy, to name just a few, plus two-for-one drinks and laughing gas, and you’ve got a bloody good birthday bash. In fact, it sounds rather like Atomic Energy’s 6th Birthday at Mass on 5th February. Big grin Wink

In such a fickle industry parties come and go according to whims and cycles, but some manage to carve out a niche and develop a loyal following. Atomic Energy is one of them.

Surprisingly, there are still people out there who haven’t discovered this gem of a party (shame on you! Frown ). But if I had a pound for every person on Harder Faster who has said: “I’ve only just discovered Atomic Energy but it’s become one of my favourite parties”, I’d be single-handedly responsible for depleting supplies at the laughing gas stall…

If you’re one of those who have been ‘meaning to go but not got round to it’; make sure you get to this one because it will be the last Atomic Energy for some time, while those behind the party focus on other projects and re-energise.

First and foremost Atomic Energy are about delivering London’s finest underground party. Many brand themselves underground but few truly are. Raving has always been an escape from the pressures of modern life or a mundane existence, bringing together people from different backgrounds and experiences with a common purpose - to let their hair down and party with like-minded people. Atomic Energy remains true to the vibe, providing a taste of what it was like in ‘the good old days’ but is rarely experienced in London today (at least outside of squat parties).

Atomic Energy is deeper than this though. Espousing love, light and respect for each other, the planet we inhabit and every living thing in the Universe, their philosophy is reflected in the depth of their intricate and beautifully designed fliers. However, part of the appeal of Atomic Energy is that it works perfectly on whatever level you choose.

At its most basic level the Atomic Energy ‘difference’ is something that becomes obvious from the minute you get to the party. Ask any of the regulars and they’ll tell you pretty much the same thing: you’re guaranteed a wild party with a wicked group of people, friendly, and totally without attitude. The venues are chosen with friendly and unobtrusive security in mind. Musically, there is amazing variety and always a fresh and upfront line-up. In terms of production and décor, it’s the small things that count and are noticed. “The decor and stalls, all these little extras make all the difference and you can tell the promoters put a lot of effort into their event,” says Atomic Energy regular, Claire (*cheeky chick*).

One new face at the last party was Mark from Northampton hardcore promotion, Jellybeanz, who came down to check it out. What made the night stand out for him? “The atmosphere was nice and friendly - everyone had a smile on their face; the 2 for 1 on drinks before midnight - always welcome!!!!; the live PAs, as they gave the night more of a raw edge. The music was a slightly harder edge of hard trance - not at all what we were expecting but very welcome!”

Atomic Energy takes their music policy very seriously and puts a lot of time and energy into getting not only the line-up but also the flow of the night just right. The line-up for 5 February is, unsurprisingly for anyone in the know, another corker with two rooms of hard beat energy and live acts plus the renowned psy- trance room.

This time the live acts will be spread across two rooms rather than contained in one.
Headlining the night is the extraordinary Captain Tinrib (with percussionist), whose live shows have an awesome reputation – and with good reason. There is only one Captain and anyone who steps aboard his ship is guaranteed a voyage they’ll never forget.

Resident crowd pleasers, the storming Group 185 and trance maestro Eryk Orpheus, decimated the dance floor with their PAs at the last event and have been closeted away in their respective studios putting the finishing touches on new material for the upcoming party. They’ll also be dishing out copies of the new album on Intelli-Trance records, "Eryk Orpheus vs Group 185" mixed by JD.

They’ll be joined by a stellar cast of DJs including fast-rising techno DJ/producer Alex Calver, Kevin Energy, Marc Johnson and Marc French. There’s also the eagerly-awaited b2b 'battle' between Eryk Orpheus and Nu Energy’s Mark Ashley, guaranteed to cause extreme stompage on the floor and elevate heartbeats to much the same level as the bpms emanating from the decks.

Adding to the party atmosphere and providing unrivalled tunage with maximum stompage are Matt Style b2b Andy Vinal, Descent b2b Phil Able, Rubec, Fabry and Mattie C plus the Psy Trance room featuring Kristian, Carlos Santan, Freaky Bob, Metaphase, Jamez and Fordy b2b Iain Coleman, sure to be a mad mad set!!

I spoke to a few of those playing to find out what they’re up to this year and what they’ve got in store for us on the night.

Captain Tinrib
What are some of your goals for 2005?

Going back to the dockyard next week to start rustling up this year’s new clobba. Warm up the cannons and fire them out. Should be more quality gear out this year as the studio is built and ready for action. Latest monster from the deep was created just before Xmas by the Captain himself and Sol Ray, “The Attack Of The 50ft DJ” no less! Watch out for the latest releases on Vicious Circle & Tidy Trax.

What do you have planned for your set at Atomic Energy's 6th birthday on 5 Feb?

About 75% of the live show is all new stuff. Some of it just made solely for the show to keep it all special. Then there's those special 'Captain Tinrib's all-time Greatest Hits' numbers that have to be played to keep the Tinrib Massive at bay. To top all that the Captain will be bringing his percussionist, Chris 'The Real Drummer' Edwards. With this little lot we'll definitely beat it into you!

Alex Calver
What are some of your goals for 2005?

My main goals in 2005 are to play as many gigs in as many different places as possible including (USA/Australia/New Zeland/Poland/Venezeula/Brazil). I have a track signed to a German hard Techno label called 'Planet Natus' run by the extremely talented Robert Natus, so if I can get any more trax signed to European labels I will be very happy. I hope to be able to keep my label Glitch going as things are very tuff on the vinyl market at the minute. I also have an idea for a new project that I’m gonna try to get going by the summer, it will be a new sound for me, much tougher and extreme than anything I’ve been doing of late.

What do you have planned for your set at Atomic Energy?

I will try to read the crowd as to how hard I start my set and obviously take into consideration the previous DJ, so I cant know exactly until I’m there. But I only play techno, so don't expect to hear anything else, I think techno is a very broad term and I try to keep a wide spectrum of vinyl with me, I always try and play as much of my own stuff as possible too.You could hear anything from the likes of 'Primate/Re-loops' to the more extreme sounds of 'Schranz'.

Kevin Energy
What are some of your goals for 2005?

My main goal is to get in the studio more and get more tracks of mine out in raveland! I spent too much time organizing tasks and labels in the office last year and my creative side didn't get a chance to come through. DJ'ing wise I will continue to always offer something fresh and diverse to the dance floors -there's nothing worse then hearing the same old beat all night!

What do you have planned for your set at Atomic Energy?

Well it will be the end of the night so I plan to take up the tempos and suck everybody into a vortex of euphoric energy and audio bliss!

Group 185 & Group 185 DJS
What are some of your goals for 2005?

Our goals this year are getting our vinyl releases sorted; “Monkey Cheese” which is out very soon on Dynamix followed by an EP with “Sheep Kicker” and “The Scourge” on it on one of the nu energy labels. Also, to get our Intelli-trance cd album into shops worldwide, as soon as possible, and a couple of overseas gigs would be nice too! Apart from that we want to take it as it comes this year rather than getting overly concerned about the state of the scene. We want to do some free gigs at cyberdog as well, as we had a great laugh last time without the pressure of big business and money; we just love playing out as a big team with Eryk, Fordy, Descent, Type 1 and my own 185 geezers. There’s also some very talented DJs out there who need a break, we’d like to get them onboard and have them play at some of our own smaller promotions (along with help from Dean, Susie and Tom).

DJ-wise we would like to get some more play outs for Mike and JD (as Group 185 DJs). They really kick ass and have been damaging dance floors wherever they’ve played so far.

What do you have planned for your set at Atomic Energy on 5 Feb?

We have a couple of new tunes to play out and some old favourites that always seem to go down well. We’ve been well busy, being involved with promoting this party as well as putting together a new set, but we’ve come up with something heavy duty to start the set with, including our Underworld remix “Crazy” and our acid orientated “Raving Dutchman” that we are still putting finishing touches on as you read this – you know the drill, bring yer crash helmets!!

Eryk Orpheus
What are some of your goals for 2005?

2005 is going to be a busy year. My Intelli-Trance label has just released “Eryk Orpheus Vs Group 185”, which is doing really well, and there’ll be two LIVE albums out in late summer. The first two single releases will be available in late spring (Group 185: “Dr Strange” and Eryk Orpheus Vs JD: “Welcome to My World”) and by summer the Intelli-Trance-NRG label will also be up and running.

I’ve also got loads of live shows to do up and down the country and I’ll be going abroad to promote the label. All this as well as some top producers already booked into the studio for collaborations and remixes, so life is sweet. Keep checking the Intelli-Trance website for more details.

What do you have planned for your set at Atomic Energy

Mr Ashley and Mr Energy have just been down to mine to work on some tunage so Mark and myself have blistering collaborations to exclusively premiere to the loyal Atomic Energy crowd when we do our back to back, which I'm really looking forward to! There’s also a couple of new tunes in the live set as well.

Mark Ashley
What are some of your goals for 2005?

For 2005 I'm aiming to have at least 3 new tracks released and more produced, would like to try and get over to the states and Canada playing Freeform and Hardcore, in the UK I am working to become more established in the rave scene and am hoping to play at events such as Slammin and Helter Skelter, watch this space !

What do you have planned for your set at Atomic Energy?
As ever I have nothing planned, I was down at Eryk’s on the Friday b4 AE to write something for the night with him and have a mix, should be an interesting combination, Intelli-Trance meets Nu Energy, bound to blow the roof off so you'd better not miss it !!!!

Marc Johnson
What are some of your goals for 2005?

This year I want to carry on making Tripoli and Flashpoint as strong as they can be. I’m still gonna carry on the heavy production as I’ve got quite a lot of remixes booked: in the next couple of weeks I’ll be remixing Ben Stevens’ and Sam Townend’s "Underground Funk" for Tripoli, the Alien Things "Would You?" for Brain Damage and a track by Simon Eve and Dynamic Intervention for Recharge. I generally wanna keep pushing to improve myself in every department.

What do you have planned for your set at Atomic Energy?

I really can’t wait as I think I have a late set so can really play the sound I’m trying to push. There’s loads of good music in the bag at the moment - Mardi and Dwyer’s "Evil Genius" and "Mad Dogs" which both do serious damage and Justin Bourne and Mik Cree’s remixes of "Access" and "Kick Ass Elements" which are both top draw - so I’m looking to play a really fresh set that sets things up for the captain as I believe I'm on before him.

And from the Psy-Trance Room…

Kristian
What are some of your goals for 2005?

Half of my goals for 2005 are complete already, that is playing in the three major festivals of Psy Trance for the summer of 2005:the Full Moon in Germany, The Glade UK (confirmed word and mouth), and The Sonica in Italy are all booked.

I would also like to have the same amount of bookings I had in the last three years, especially the ones abroad (slowly they are already piling in). In terms of production I’d like to get the live act ready together with Dj Kalimamboh and release tracks. The live act will be called Deja Voo. The music we are writing is powerful percussive-orientated full On Psy Trance, we still need to work on the sound a bit more but should be ready very soon, fingers crossed. Playing the Psy Trance sound outside the actual scene itself would be very nice, its some thing i always had in my mind from the beginning of my DJ days in 1999,i always thought Psy Trance has that potential especially nowadays, with the Israeli sound and the high standard of production around. The promotion power of Antiworld will also be a major benefactor in this mission.

What do you have planned for your set at Atomic Energy?

At Atomic Energy I will play a faster set than my normal bpm because I’m pretty sure the crowd at Atomic are up for a faster tempo. I don’t like to specialise in one of the many sounds in the Psy Scene, though my main sound is morning full-on, but i always like to start it off a bit darker and then build it into morning full on (a little story, not just one line). And that is exactly what I will do at Atomic Energy; I’ve got a new Psy Remix of “Can’t Start the Dance” by the Prodigy, - I will definitely drop that one!

Fordy
What are some of your goals for 2005?

I've been extremely busy totally immersing myself in psy-trance parties & the psy-trance scene, I've been to so many wonderful parties, particularly on the outdoor / free / squat party circuit. This kind of music is particularly suited to being enjoyed in the great outdoors & I've certainly been doing a lot of enjoying & fully intend to do a whole lot more!

I've also been busy in the studio, making tracks with DJ Amethyst (Hinotori Sound) & Iain Coleman (Ajuca) I aim to be producing many more. These tracks are pretty full-on psy-trance with that certain Fordy energetic loony touch. I'd like to do some more overseas gigs too (Brazil would be nice!).

What do you have planned for your set at Atomic Energy?

I basically want to have a good time & ensure that as many people as possible have the time of their lives on the dance floor. Let's ROCK!!! Full-on, full-throttle, full-power psychedelic energy (with plenty of oomph!) to get everyone leaping around & bouncing off the walls & smiling. It's all about feeling good!

The last word goes to another AE stalwart, Webbo: “wicked line up, gas for a quid, 2 for 1 drinks offers b4 midnight, live PAs…. would be mad to miss it!”

So, there you have it! See yer all down the front, alright? Devilish
