Review: PhazedOut presents Visions on Saturday 29 January 2005

Reported by Jon Daniels / Submitted 02-03-05 11:07

I have DJ’d with PhazedOut for a few years now, first starting out at what was Enzo’s nightclub in Salisbury. To me, PhazedOut had something about them which put a smile on my face and gave me a sense of joy to be a part of. Their policy is, “To bring back a unique twist to the clubbing community and to showcase many unknown talents which normally wouldn’t see the light of day.” Fantastic! A promotion that is prepared to give many unheard of DJs a chance in a clubbing environment. That alone pleased me, but not as much as getting to know both Colin and Colette and understanding what they were trying to achieve with their nights.

They are aiming to put on intimate and friendly parties with a no attitude policy and make your nights with them a very welcome one! I must admit, every event of theirs I have been to has had an aura about it, as though you're part of the same family and that you're part of something fresh, just like clubbing used to be. So, not only do their nights have this atmosphere about them, but they showcase national and international DJs at the forefront of the scene, whilst giving unknown talents a chance in front of a responsive audience. I am sure you can understand my joy at being part of the PhazedOut nights!

For a brief while, Colin and Colette had to move to Germany for a year and what they first created had to be put on hold. Well, they are back now and have set up a new home at The Edge nightclub in Nottingham, pretty much in the centre of all the nightlife in the area. Superb news, but it got better when they asked me to open the event with a funky techno warm up in the main room and to follow that by a progressive house set in the second room. To say I was looking forward to this was an understatement!

Finally the 29th drew closer and before we knew it, we were on our way to Nottingham, eager to see what PhazedOut had done with their new home.

After booking into our hotel near by, we promptly left to find the club. Nottingham centre is mostly a one-way system and after going around in circles for a short while, we found the club. From the outside you couldn’t really tell what it would be like but after parking the car and walking straight into the club through to the main room, it was obvious to me that this club was perfect for their new events. The main room had a real underground feel to it. It was quite dark, lit by ultra-violet lights and the DJ booth towered over the dance floor with a very impressive array of speakers!

Music policy for this room was techno, hard trance and hardstyle, which suits it extremely well! The capacity of the main room was about 200, so a perfect size to keep things nice and intimate. We decided to take a walk upstairs to the second room and was pleasantly surprised by the contrast. The second room is completely different to the main, as it's newly refurbished, with drapes hung from the ceiling, superb green laser panning the room, a nice sized dance floor, comfy seating towards the bar area and some cool pictures throughout. Balloons were scattered throughout the room giving the room a real party atmosphere. ‘Intrigue’ were hosting this room with their breaks, progressive house and trance sounds with live percussion.

Ok, so I proceed downstairs to start things off. I began to play tunes from the likes of Henrik B, Ant etc., which got a great response. 11pm came around soon enough and Benz took over the decks with his hard trance sounds. Benz has been seen around the country, playing for the Gurn.netboys at various venues and a night called Squelcher in the capital. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to hang around and listen to his set as I was due to play in the second room.

I ran upstairs and Keir (who has played at events such as Passion) was warming up with some chilled out breaks whilst Pickle on the bongos was setting up ready to perform alongside me. I began to play some tech house leading onto some progressive house later on in the set. Pickle on the bongos was doing an excellent job, really getting himself involved with what I was playing, everyone in the room commented on what an excellent feature he was to the room and that he worked well with the style of music that was being played.

I played through till 12:30am until Andy King (who plays frequently at The Brunel Rooms in Swindon, www.brunelrooms.com) took over and annihilated the dance floor with some heavy progressive house which really grabbed the attention of all in the room! I know Andy very well and every time I hear him play out he gets a fantastic reaction! Downstairs Benz had finished and Sean Demaine (www.seandemaine.deejays.co.uk) had taken over the decks playing some pounding hard style. The place was really moving and you could really feel the energy and the friendly atmosphere throughout. I have played alongside Sean in Germany for the LoveBase party so I knew what Sean was capable of! Dancers were performing on podiums and hostesses were walking throughout with lots of goodies.

I was personally keen to go back upstairs to listen to Andy’s set, which he didn’t disappoint me with! He soon left the decks and was taken over by the headlining set from Jamesy (www.jamesy.dj). Jamesy has played throughout the country at nights such as Passion, Wildchild and Se7enth Heaven to name a few. Having his mixes aired on Paul Van Dyke’s radio says exactly what this guy can do! He had the room in his hand, his tech trance sound was belting through the speakers keeping all in the room stomping until the closing hours whilst in the main room Miss XS was playing some of the hardest stuff I have ever heard, leaving certain people loosing the plot!

Too soon was it that the club was closing and I was left with a huge smile on my face, knowing that PhazedOut were back on track with a storming opening night! Everyone I spoke to throughout the night agreed that the night was one of the friendliest they have experienced and that all the DJs there performed outstandingly! After speaking with Colin and Colette about the future of their events within The Edge, they informed me that every month in the main room it will continue to be all things hard, whilst in the second room they will be trying out different ideas.

Thanks to PhazedOut for the use of their photos.
