History in the making for the global DIGITAL SESSIONS phenomenon

Reported by Gary Ramsden / Submitted 28-04-05 00:03

Everybody’s talking about DIGITAL SESSIONS, the concept that’s taken the dance music media by storm and looks set to reshape the sales of upfront dance music in the years to come. Brand spanking new tracks, which you can buy as you hear them live on the night from the likes of John 00 Fleming, Matt Darey, Ben Lost and Darren Tate at Trance Generation on Friday 13th May. For all trance music lovers, the promised land has now arrived.

To find out more about this ground breaking event that goes out to every country in the world, we caught up with two of the guys behind it, Ricky Simmonds and Steve Jones from AudioJelly.com who explain not only the global importance of this event, but also why they’re giving away thousands of free tracks to celebrate this incredible launch.

AudioJelly is a name we’re hearing more and more of. For anyone who hasn’t yet heard of the concept – give us a quick idea as to what you guys are about.

Audiojelly launched last July, and it has become the leading dance music download store in Europe, selling the music of the biggest artists and labels from the global dance scene.

Everybody’s talking about the DIGITAL SESSIONS event which you’re doing with the guys from Trance Generation. What’s it all about?

We have hired a television company to record the sets of John "00" Fleming, Matt Darey, Ben Lost and Darren Tate who will be playing at The Soundshaft in London on May 13th. We will then be broadcasting this unique event to the whole world.

Oh so you mean it’s a webcast. Hasn’t this been done before?

This is something that has never been done before. There have been several webcasts in the past and countless audiostreams of dj’s sets, but this event is unique.

For the first time ever on the web, music fans tuning in across the world, will be able to buy the tracks they are hearing on the webcast – INSTANTLY. By virtue of the fact that this event is being hosted within a music download store, gives us the pioneering facility to create a slice of history.

So this will be broadcasted all over the world. It’s an incredible thought to think that people from all over the world will be listening. How big do you think the impact will be globally?

It's impossible to predict, but it could shape the future of buying dance music in the most radical way. Another exciting element to this webcast is the amount of tracks that will be available to buy before they are sold anywhere else on the planet. Several labels who will not be making tracks available digitally until their scheduled release dates in June and July, have given permission for webcast subscribers to purchase any tunes played by the djs. To be the first people to present this new experience on the web is an exciting thing to be a part of.

And you’re giving away free tracks?

Each of the four djs playing will be giving away a free download from their respective labels. What makes this even more exciting is the fact that these four tracks will be exclusive mp3’s and not available anywhere else on the planet. Aside from the free downloads from JOOF, MONDO, LOST LANGUAGE and DAREY PRODUCTS. In addtition, webcast subscribers will also have a choice of any free download from our own Audiojelly label.

So how did you manage to get the likes of John 00 Fleming etc on board ?

This event has taken almost 7 months to put together. To get a line up of djs involved that we wanted, who all have their own labels on the site – all in the same country and city on the same night…. has taken a lot of organisation! John "00" Fleming was the first dj we chose to be a part of this – simply because he was championing the digital realm before most of us even contemplated what an impact mp3s would have on dance music. When we explained the idea to John, he was very excited.

Where do you see this going in the following years to come?

The Digital Sessions is a series of webcasts Audiojelly will be hosting. We will soon be doing them on a regular basis. I wouldn’t be surprised if others involved in the internet attempt to do the same as us, but that will only be flattering!

How big a breakthrough is this?

Enormous. We have customers all over the world, who will never get the chance to see djs like John 00 Fleming or Matt Darey – but with this webcast, they now have the chance to get close to the whole experience. Coupled with the ability to buy upfront, exclusive tracks while they are listening to the djs play is a major step forward for the global dance music scene.

How can people catch the event?

By logging on to www.audiojelly.com and following the webcast instructions that will be laid out on the site.

Will it be a one off live transmission then?

No – this webcast is on-demand. With the many different time zones, we decided that it would not be fair to music fans across the world to make this only available at one specific time. Whenever anyone wants to watch the action, hear the music and download the tracks – it will be up to them.

How easy will it be to buy the tracks?

Some tracks played may already be available through the Audiojelly site, but a great deal of the upfront exclusive tracks will be only available for purchase to those subscribing to the webcast. The beauty for dance music fans, is that for paying £5.00 for access to the webcast, you will receive 5 free downloads immediately. 5 downloads (if you choose the higher bit rate of 320kbps) would cost you more than subscribing for the webcast.

So you get free tracks just by listening to it?

Absolutely. This is the first event on the internet of its kind – and Audiojelly has always put dance music fans first.

Is this all legal?

100% legal. Audiojelly has a license with the PRS-MCPS which is the collection society that makes sure all songwriters are paid when tracks are broadcast online. Having this license gives us the right to broadcast an event like this, safe in the knowledge that anyone who has a track played, will be paid for their creative efforts, in the same way they are paid when their track is heard on the radio or television. The reason we have to charge for accessing the webcast is that we have to pay a broadcast fee to the PRS-MCPS for every user who tunes in.

Who else is behind it?

Our proud partners in this event are M8 Magazine, Trance.nu and Digitally Imported.

How upfront are your tracks generally?

A lot of our repertoire is available before it is even released on vinyl these days. Labels are choosing the digital format to lead the way, as it looks increasingly like it will overtake cds and vinyl in sales terms sooner than everyone had originally expected.

What labels do you feature?

We feature labels from every genre, whether they are small digital imprints like Aurium or major established labels such as Nukleuz, Black Hole or Azuli.

This is clearly a revoltionary idea that is set to make some serious waves in the way dance music is purchased.

If you want to be part of the live event and in the crowd to be broadcast from Trance Generation to all over the world, check out: www.trancegeneration.co.ukfor more info.
