Tilt 2nd birthday preview: interview with Charlie Rox

Reported by VinDiesel / Submitted 04-05-05 19:46

This month, Tilt celebrates its 2nd birthday. Over the past two years, Tilt has grown to be one of London’s most popular daytime parties, recently moving on to Friday night events at their home, Vauxhall’s Studio 33. Within this the party has been entertaining a regular loyal crowd with its mixture of hard trance and house played by some of the finest DJs on the scene in one of the most stylish clubs in London. It’s no wonder that Tilt picked up awards for Best Day Party and Best New Party in its first year. I decided to catch up with Tilt co-promoter and DJ Charlie Rox and find out more about the success of Tilt, his role in Tilt and the party’s future plans.

Tilt has become of the established hard dance parties over the past 2 years but to those new to the Tilt experience, explain how it all started?

Tilt started 2 years ago in May 2003. Nathan and I had been running and promoting a small underground party at The Telegraph in Brixton called Tolerance. This party had been running for 2 years and we were now winding it down as various people involved were looking to move abroad and we felt as a small party we had done all we could do. Tilt literally started as Tolerance finished with Nathan deciding he wanted to run his own promotion and invited me on board financially and as a resident DJ. I was also looking to increase my profile in London as a DJ and have a crack at playing some of the wicked parties that I had been going to as a clubber. With Nathan being an up for it clubber and me being on the scene for 11 years we knew what we wanted to do with Tilt — put on a seriously awesome trance party!!!

You refer to Tilt having a strict music policy, what exactly does this constitute?

Nathan and I pride ourselves on what we want musically at Tilt, call us fussy but we love our trance to the heart and want to seek out the best uplifting sounds that make you smile and feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand out!!! We try and cover all styles of trance at Tilt from progressive, uplifting, energetic through to psy-trance and tech, a little bit of everything. I feel at Tilt we’ve done the UK hard trance and hard dance sound, I want to be moving forward musically with Tilt and the scene in London, there are so many parties around and I want to be different, be noticed and stand out. Adding the funky room with Groove Factory is another major play in opening Tilt up to a whole new crowd and pushing things further.

You’re described as a co-promoter for Tilt and also a DJ. Do you find it hard balancing these two roles?

It can be a bit hectic when I’m playing at Tilt and working the party, i.e. operating the guestlist and making sure the party is running smoothly etc, but I make sure I don’t play at every Tilt so I can actually enjoy my party and get on the dance floor to hear the quality DJs I’ve booked!! Being a DJ means you need to be out and about promoting yourself so I can incorporate the promotion for Tilt at various parties whilst getting my face about! Nathan handles the publicity work, venue and all the little things that need to be done, I concentrate on the music side of Tilt and my own DJ work but we are both out there flyering when it’s needed. It’s not too hectic but sometimes my weekends are wild and crazy!!!

A lot of promotions are now turning to co-hosting rooms with other promotions with events such as Bedlam, Innovate doing so. Do you see this happening with Tilt?

We are always open for ideas in joint hosting a party like we did with Heat at the Cross but I don’t believe in co-hosting a small back room somewhere. It’s not what we are about, we are a quality party in our own right and I feel we would be undermining ourselves and all the hard work we have put in. Remember, it’s all about going forward as a party.

Attributed to Tilt’s success has been its home at Studio 33, which includes a plush décor and firm but friendly security. Are there other venues in London such as Pacha, The End etc that you would fancy doing a Tilt party at?

We love Studio 33!!! It’s been a great venue for us since the start, they were still building it around us when we had our first party there!!! Its got 3 wicked rooms of equal quality that have helped create the Tilt vibe from our humble beginnings, the décor is class and it has a very comfortable environment to be clubbing in: we love the intimate style!!! Few venues can offer what we need so at the moment there is no where else I feel I want to hold a party that gives me exactly what I need, but you never know!!!!

Since Tilt has started, there have been a number of day parties that have started up including 123, One, etc. Do you see this particular part of the hard dance scene becoming saturated?

No way!!!! At the moment you can count the number of day parties probably on one hand whereas the night parties, well, you know, start the queue here!!! That market is wide open for anyone to start up. If you can get the right people in and promote it well, then I feel any one can put on a day party, the only tricky thing is summer. You can really struggle and that’s why we never put a day party on that time of year, people want to be out during the day especially when in London good hot days can be very rare!!!

I noticed at the last Tilt that James Lawson played some energizing psy-trance. Is this something different that you would like to see more off at future Tilt parties?

Oh yes, we are slowly starting to incorporate that style of music into our policy at Tilt and James Lawson is leading the charge!! You have to slowly tease it in to a crowd who may of never heard that style before or know what it is. I feel psy-trance could be the next big thing for trance and London, it’s such a fresh change in music direction and is a welcome sound when all you hear sometimes is hard dance and hard trance. I personally find it very exciting and I’m hoping clubbers at Tilt will also warm to the unique and throbbing sound pulsating from the speakers!!!!

Who are the up and coming DJs that you would like to see play at Tilt?

At the moment we have played or are playing a lot of the up and comings that are on the scene. Our list includes Marc Antoine, Panic One, Del Walsh, Pandora S-K, Courage, Greg Downey, Sophie Sugar, Red 5 and Charlie Bradley, to name a few. These DJs share a real passion for trance, bringing their unique sound and a real understanding for the music they love and are all down to earth as well!!! It’s really hard to try and play every one who sends in a cracking demo but we do our best and were not afraid to try out new talent. Luli and K.a.r.l are others to watch for and we hope to have them play soon!!!

Describe some of your favourite moments from the past 2 years, including sets that have blown you away, any comedy moments.

To be honest, for me, every Tilt has been very special and unique. To ask for a favourite moment, I would say the first birthday as everyone played awesome firing sets and it was going off big time in both rooms. All the parties have rocked in my opinion! Sets for me have been every Ian Betts set, every Dave Lochrie set, hell, all the residents have delivered blinders at some point at Tilt, actually 95% of guests have even satisfied me fully (musically that is!!!). My memory isn’t that good but I’m sure there have been some hilarious moments. I think Simon Rutherford making wee mistakes is always a magic moment for me and Ali Wilson has made me raise an eyebrow or two!!

Tilt has been described as attracting clubbers from a certain demographic. Some would say that this is discriminatory… What would your reply be to those people?

Depends how you view things from a clubbers perspective. Tilt doesn’t have a door policy but we expect people to present and behave themselves in a suitable manner. We try to create an enjoyable environment for the clubber, somewhere they can come and be relaxed, to enjoy, and go home with a smile on their face. We like to look after the thoughts and feelings of our punters, if there is a problem or they are not satisfied then we are happy to hear them out and see what can be done. I’m sure most promoters would do the same. I want to put on a quality event without compromising the needs, looking after the silent majority instead of the loud minority.

Describe how you feel before and after a Tilt... i.e. when you see the first excited clubbers come in the door at the beginning through to the end when the needle comes to the end of the last tune... and everybody stops dancing, they start clapping in applause and move on home?

Leading up to Tilt is a mixture of nerves and utter excitement. I look forward to seeing all my friends I know and welcoming new people to the party when I’m on the door. I actually really enjoy seeing all the clubbers turning up, smiling and ready to get Tilted!! After that it’s on to the dance floor to feel the vibe and see how things are going, then as the party moves on I start to chill bout 2-3am when I think most people are in the venue and we get a rough idea on the numbers. To be honest, I don’t want it to finish come 6am… why??? You can’t beat the feeling after the last tune and the smiles all round! But it doesn’t always end there!!! I don’t fully relax till the party is over when I’m at a crack-on and that is my time to reflect and chat about the night, I’m on my feet through the whole time so a sit down is like a present from god!!!!

You’re holding your 2nd birthday on 6 May. What have you got lined up for this party?

Well, to start with we are opening up all 3 rooms. The large main room will be the trance room, and headlining is Gallery resident Gavyn Mytchel. He already has many productions under his belt and they have all been signed to major labels, has just recently warmed up for Armin Van Burren and is starting to DJ all over the world, definitely one to watch on the global trance scene! In the Crystal room will be Groove Factory with Shane Watcha and Cheshire Catz headlining who are big names in the funky house scene and in the Tilt bar Kurruption are hosting with funky breaks and electro so I think we have something for everyone!!! Also we have a VJ coming in to provide some visuals and effects, mix it with the usual Tilt vibe you would be mad to miss this one!!

Where would you like to see Tilt going in the next 12 months? Would you like to see it keep its core crowd and keep the happy vibe going in the parties at Studio 33, or would you like to grow it and move to bigger venues?

After the 2nd birthday we won’t be doing anymore club events until Sept/Oct time but there will be a boat party on the 6th August which I can’t wait for! I seriously love boat parties in the summer, so keep a lookout for this!!! At the moment we are happy keeping the intimate vibe and suitable surroundings at Studio 33. This venue has 3 quality rooms, the sound is very good and the security spot on. It’s easy to get to in Vauxhall and people know the location now. I would like to see Tilt stick to a reasonable size of 500 over 2 rooms; I don’t want to get too big because we’d risk losing the intimacy that makes Tilt the party that it is. For me, clubbing is and should be a warm enjoyable experience in the company of good happy faces for as long as possible with the best music you can find. Once that goes then my heart won’t be in it and I’ll be doing it for all the wrong reasons, but for now I’m still going strong and the magic is still there.
