Insekt welcome their 2 new residents, Ian M & Richard Toomz
Reported by Club Insekt
/
Submitted 06-03-06 12:27
After a month off to recharge the batteries, Insekt flies back for some March madness and a switch to the second Saturday of the month. Welcoming the resident and king of hard house, Paul Glazby back to the line-up, we have support from Messrs Sentience, Nardi and Johnson and the introduction of brand new Insekt resident, Richard Toomz. Mr Toomz has made a fast rise to this position, from his humble beginnings as a clubber and true Message Board Hero on Vicious Circle, to an up and coming producer and DJ. March sees his main room debut at Insekt and Fire Club, which shows what his hard work has earned him.
Also recently announced as Insekt resident is a man who needs no introduction on the hard house scene, Ian M. He has been rocking dancefloors for many years and we at Insekt felt it only right for the legend to join ranks with the other leading players in the scene to make for an impressive monthly DJ roster.
The team grabbed a few words with these new arrivals under the brand new lights and lazers at the Fire Club, looking forward to an interesting and exciting 2006 down in Vauxhall.
Ian M
Hi Ian. Are you excited about you new residency at Insekt alongside such other hard house heavyweights as Paul Glazby and Justin Bourne?
Yea! It should be a giggle. I try to have a laugh with all the DJs at the end of the day, no point taking it too seriously is there.
You have played for Insekt once before but how you did you find your first set as resident at the Xmas party?
It was quite fun that night. Besides having my first mix jump on me (thanks to some munted punter banging into the dj box). I finished my set with a track (Demon Trax Vol.1) and I had forgotten what the bassline was like. Was getting some funny faces from some people, who I won’t mention. However, in the end, the dancefloor loved it, so I was happy.
How would you describe your style and how do you think it will compliment the Insekt sound?
Didn’t realize I had a style? However, if I have one, it could be called either ‘hard’ and ‘relentless’ or ‘inventive’ and ‘daring’. As John Newman (then owner of Turnmills) used to tell me down at Trade “take them on a journey”! Regarding the Insekt sound, I’m sure we’ll all adapt together and put the Insekt name on the worldwide stage.
You have also recently just taken on another residency for another party at the Fire Club, Fuel, on Sunday mornings. Can you tell us more about this new party and your plans for Fuel?
I believe Fuel is the brainchild of Craig (owner of Fire) and Lady Bianca (quite a good dj in her own right) while James Nardi and Chris work on doing the promotion. Their idea was to carry on the tradition of an afterhours type party for the people who want to party on from the big name gigs that go on week after week. They have been asking me for months to join the crew but when they came back with the idea of the Fuel night, they asked me to help front it with the other djs.
Also sometime in the future, Bianca has suggested to me the opportunity to play some techno sets (which I also use to play at Trade) in one of the other rooms, which should be interesting.
In addition, it is good to see a club re-invest back into the club, they have just installed a new LED lighting rig that has to be seen to be believed. I heard you could feed video through it as well, so you will be able to watch yourself on the ceiling. Trippy or what?
Because of this, you have had to quit as resident for another Sunday morning club, Twist, after 2 years loyal service. Was this a hard decision to make and do you have a parting message for your dedicated following?
I felt it was time for me to move on after playing Twist for 2 years or so, loads of things have happen since I first started playing there. Moreover, I was not happy with the direction they were going, so I thought “Fuck it”, time to move on. There is obviously a bit more to my moving but I am not willing to divulge as of yet. For the people who have previously come down to Twist to see me play, I suggest you now pop down to Fuel or Insekt at Fire. Do not believe any of the negative crap you may have read in certain internet forums. Those people need to seriously grow up or bugger off to a far off land and carry on playing with their Barbie (or Ken) dolls.
You have also been heavily involved with some of the recent Vicious Circle tour parties which must be a great pleasure?
Yea! It’s been a lot of fun playing for a label I’ve supported from day dot But can yer blag a t-shirt out of them? Can you hell! Tight or what?
I have tried to get one at each of their gigs and they still have not coughed up! (Hint! Hint!) (In addition, I would like a dark coloured XXXL size please.) He!He!
Do you have any plans to get back into the studio for the long awaited follow up to Crazy Pills/Wind Up?
That is what I have recently been doing at Paul’s studio, but then I came down with flu and was laid up for a week. Therefore, I STILL have not finished it. However, I’m sure you will get to know when the track is done, when you hear it down Fuel. In addition, there has been talk of remixing some of my original tracks, so watch this space for further details.
In which direction can you see the scene heading in 2006?
As I’ve said before in previous interviews, bugger knows?
I suppose you should ask the government that question because they’re the ones trying mess up the scene with their ‘no smoking’ policies for clubs etc. plus other rules and regulations. Their next brilliant idea will be ‘no drinking alcohol’ in clubs/pubs. It’s called freedom of choice and we should adopt it sooner than later.
Richard Toomz
When you first started playing at the Purple Turtle did you ever think you’d progress rapidly into a main room resident?
No, not really. It was almost 2 years ago that I was given the chance to play at Ultim-8 by George E, then onto Byte when that was started up. Then when the lads created Insekt I was receiving more bookings for room 2 slots and now finally have the chance to playing the main room which I’m excited about. I have been playing the tracks of the 2 headliners for years so it’s great to be playing on the same lineup as them.
Recently you have moved into the production side of things with 2 tracks signed to Toolbox, is this something that you aim to focus on in the coming year?
I think it’s a natural progression for DJs to want to start making the tracks they play out. You get to play the exact style you enjoy rather than waiting for someone else to produce a track you like. I was very new to the whole producing side of things when I made ‘Bizarre’ so was more than pleased when Toolbox signed it. The second track picked up is ‘Margherita’ which was made with Dave Owens. It’s only just recently been signed and have heard it’s going to be remixed by one of my favourite DJs/producers Paul Glazby, so really cant wait for its release. Have also just finished a couple of more tracks with Dave. Working with these engineers has helped me a lot in finding my feet on my own. It’s early days yet, but have found the experiences a lot better than spending hours reading through books and manuals.
There is a certain bootleg that you have had a hand in, are there any more plans for tracks in your Camilla Vokes guise?
I’m not sure under that guise but both Frank and I are certainly going to be working on more material soon. There is a remix for a digital label in the pipeline and we also want to get started on some original tracks. The ‘Vacuum Packed’ bootleg was only really made as a bit of fun for ourselves but has been played out by Justin Bourne, Karim and Ben Stevens so might be rude not to have a bash at something else.
Having seen you play both funky warm up and silly nails sets, is there one of the two you prefer?
I enjoy both to be honest, but probably sway towards the groovier side of things as there’s more of a swing to it, to wiggle your finger to and all that. I find it more of a fun sound than the usual grit your teeth style of NRG. It’s more enjoyable to mix in my opinion and easier to dance to as well... when I actually do. Can’t beat a few happy riffs.
At the moment the majority of your gigs are London based, do you have any plans to branch out in 2006?
Yeah definitely. I’ve played a few parties outside the M25; in Manchester, Leicester and even an interesting warehouse party in Portsmouth, but I guess it’s just a case of getting off your backside and making yourself known to these promoters. We’re spoilt for choice for parties in London, but there are definitely some great events out there I’d love to get involved with.
You’ve been clubbing for many years, what aspects of the music bought your current style to your attention?
Hearing Paul Glazby for the first time at Feersum back in 2000 is what attracted me to the harder sounds I think. Before that I didn’t really have any direction in my style, just buying any old record that seemed alright. It wasn’t until I started to play out and being booked for warm-up sets that I discovered my love for the groovy tunes. Found myself playing all the old B sides in my collection and realised what I had been missing.
In which direction can you see the scene heading in 2006?
Lots of people are saying that funky hard house will be the next fad in hard house, but there doesn’t seem to be that much evidence of everyone jumping on the bandwagon, just a few producers. Be nice to see that happen, but it’s good to get a good variety too, not just one style as the main focus for the year. Quite a few labels have dropped off recently, leaving behind the really passionate artists in the scene who will hopefully push things forward into 2006 and beyond.
Who do you think will be the ones to watch on both the DJing/production front for 2006?
Haven’t been out as much as I’d like recently so not heard many of the new up and comings that are out there but I have no doubt Steve Maynard will carry on where he left off last year. Got some cool tracks lined up on a big label soon too which is all good. On the producing side I’ve been playing lots of Tim Clewz’ tracks recently… for the lovers of the groovier side of hard house he can do no wrong at the moment. Dave Owens is also another one to watch out for. Lots of interesting tracks coming out soon from him, some also made with Frank Farrell, so I think we’ll be seeing more of this pair this year.
When you’re not in Fire club or wiggling your finger elsewhere, what are we likely to catch you doing?
Sitting in front of my PC nudging on MSN probably, haha. Apart from that just going out with mates and getting drunk really… the usual.

From: wez on 7th Mar 2006 15:32.00 ITS ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC AND THE DJS.......GREAT TUNES + GREAT DJ'S.....A GREAT FUTURE! People with passion for the scene are the people who will take it forward. IAN...... word up duk!
From: twist on 7th Mar 2006 19:43.24 Ian may not wish to divulge all the reasons for his departure from Twist but I can assure you there is much more to it than just 'fuck it'.
I'm sure most DJs and promoters who have worked with Ian know how notoriously unreliable he is. Over the two years he played for Twist and Blast his lateness became more and more frequent until it was almost every set. This sheer lack of professionalism and respect for other DJs became such a concern that it soon over shadowed his skill.
Added to this that the Twist crowd were complaining that his style was getting too relentless and dull it was obvious we would have to release him.
I attempted many times to contact him in December to advise him we would start 2006 and go our seperate ways but he would not return any calls. I left a message to this effect. So it's quite easy to decide 'fuck it' when you know the push is coming.
Over the two years Ian played for us, he played 3 sets per month and was paid £900. It is a shame he now feels he has to go throwing his toys out of his pram with silly remarks. We have all refrained from any comments so far but it apears he wants to discuss these in public now. Well that's his choice.
I wish Ian all the best with his new residencies and hope he can improve his time keeping and not let down his new promoters, djs and of course fans.
From: sweetness on 7th Mar 2006 21:39.20 As a clubber I do have to agree slightly with Twist here! I noticed many a times that when I was waiting for Ian M' s set to start it would always seem to start late, which didn't look good to be honest, although sometimes it benefited me if I was runnning late as well lol! Also back in the day I used to LOVE Ian M but he became much to hard for me, his trade days were wicked....however now he just doesnt do it for me. I may go down to fuel one morning though when he's playing to see if he can get my jucies flowing again hehehe. (Although no-one could do it as much as the TWIST DJ's wohoo!!)
From: Toomz on 7th Mar 2006 22:52.41 Well anyway, thanks for some of your comments.
From: Anja on 8th Mar 2006 01:30.43 IanM too hard? lmfao
What a champion, end of story!
From: Lady Bianca on 8th Mar 2006 17:19.41 Ian M is a LEGEND... end of!! To have him with us at Fuel is an honour.
From: *cheeky chick* on 8th Mar 2006 18:07.21 hope Insekt goes off bigtime
From: TEK-DJ Management on 8th Mar 2006 21:24.33 Well said Bianca! One thing no one can ever take away from Ian is his richly deseverved 'Legendary' status!! R.E.S.P.E.C.T
:o)
From: Fuel* on 9th Mar 2006 21:43.14 We're all well pleased to have Ian M onboard @ Fuel.
From: twist on 9th Mar 2006 22:23.43 I've never said anything to the contrary. Ian was indeed a true legend. However everything I said is true. He is the worst timekeeper of any dj I know and disappointingly unreliable.
Good luck though guys.
From: El Capitano Pete on 10th Mar 2006 12:42.02 "Ian was indeed a true legend"
I'd be inclined to say he still is. Not quite sure how a DJ can loose a legendary status but oh well
Mad props to the Disco Tozom, well done.
Good luck with the party on Saturday gents.
From: ~deleted5181 on 10th Mar 2006 16:55.04 Ian- you are the daddy!
Toomz - Good luck
From: se1pig on 11th Mar 2006 22:27.12 Will the Twist correspondent be publicly announcing THEIR wages too?
My dirty laundry is in a pile by the bath .. not blowing in the wind for all and sundry to have a gander at. If Twist is so certain they are in the right then maybe they should try taking the 'moral upper hand' and keep schtum cos this just makes them look like amateurs.
Nevertheless a 5 minute set by Ian would be worth the N2 bus for and my experience of his Twist sets was never less than good and usually 100% mint. Meanwhile can't remember the last time I heard someone saying they were off to Twist .. oh yeah .. it was before the New Year.
Egos on all sides should be kept under wraps thanks .. especially when your ego does not deserve its inflated appearance *
Good luck with your new residency Mr M
* a deserving ego would be one belonging to someone known the whole world over not just the length of Goding Street
From: PETER WARD on 12th Mar 2006 17:58.55 despite the absolute rubbish i've just read, as a fellow Trade dj and former Twist resident.......,Ian M has, is and will always be one of the most professional, talented and inspiring djs I have ever had the pleasure to work alongside. To any club he is an asset, always at the forefront of his work and a personal inspiration second to none.
From: gUrngUrl on 12th Mar 2006 18:13.13 Over the last six months it's been inspiring to hear Ian transcend genres within the hard dance arena... and make my mind blow, run upto him to ask after tunes i've not yet heard of and make me shake my ass every time without exception. I thought i'd had my fill of hard dance until I heard Ian lively up the genre with his progressive sets. Good luck to ya in any direction u choose to take I'd rather u turn up a few minutes late after a two hour mission than miss out on one of your sets. Mr M. love ya always and forever whatever anyone says.
From: mattpickup on 12th Mar 2006 23:31.16 Good stuff two good quality dj's!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cracking Residents
From: richbowenuk on 13th Mar 2006 10:09.28 Ian M is and always will be one of my favourite DJ's. The depth of his knowledge and the vastness of his record collection was awesome and I enjoyed his sets at Twist, Blast and other events. Ian was the part of the foundations for Twist for over 3 years and he made the succesful move with us from Fire to Twist. Whilst his time keeping was something to be desired at times he normally made up for it behind the decks! I was personally upset that he decided to leave Twist this year after trying to give him several chances to work more closely with the team and have his input into the event and ideas for moving Twist forward. Sadly and despite confirming in December 2005 that he was happy to stay etc etc he moved to F. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control I am not able to see him play at venues like Fridge and Fire anymore but would wish him every success at where ever his path may take him and wish him all the luck in the future! Hopefully I will get to here him bash out the tunes again soon
From: Lucy Fur on 13th Mar 2006 12:57.30 Interesting read Toomz good luck with 2006!
From: AranB on 15th Mar 2006 10:19.51 Monkey Tennis anyone?
