Hannah Wild lets loose on her 21st birthday

Once upon a time, not so long ago, women that mixed were a novelty. In an essentially male-dominated industry, having a woman on the line-up was a rare thing indeed, and certainly added a novelty factor to any event. Then, for a few years, it seemed to be the in thing, and it could be argued that it was easier for gals to get gigs than guys, well so long as they were easy on the eye and could play a few records.
Now however, chicks with decks are a dime a dozen, and not only is it not enough to mix well and look good, but a backlash has definitely started. These days, it is more difficult than ever for any new dj or producer to stand out in the cut-throat world of dance music, and if a woman looks good, it could be argued that she really needs to be able to mix twice as well as the guys to get ahead.
Having been mixing for a few years now, twenty-year-old Hannah Wild is one of the new breed of artists rising up the ranks. Resident for Sundissential, Contagious and Scream, she’s come a very long way in a very short time, leading of course to the inevitable criticisms that she’s only there because she’s gorgeous. Fortunately, not only does her mixing leave critics in the dust, she’s also dabbled in production, promotion, music journalism and modelling for her sponsors Contagious. On the eve of her twenty-first birthday, HarderFaster decided it was time to check out the world of Hannah Wild . . .
So, for those who don’t know you, how did it all start? What inspired you to become a dj? Were you always interested in music or was it something you fell into?
Gosh, well I’ve always been a pretty musical gal. I played the piano as a child and toyed with other instruments such as the guitar, but then these came to a halt when I found my love of horses! As I got older I carried on my love affair with music, listening mainly to a lot of rave tunes and when I was old enough to pass off for eighteen I began hitting the clubs.
My clubbing days started at trance parties such as Serious and Gatecrasher . . . trance was never my calling and a few years later when I was old enough to travel to London I partied hard at beloved hard house nights! I remember being in the middle of the Sundissential arena at Global Gathering some years back and imaging what it’d be like to play at such a massive event and I guess that’s where the dream of djing began.
I was working with horses around the time I got my hands on some decks and started knuckling down to grasp the skill of mixing. I hated going without my dose of tunes for too long so I would bang out hard house at the crack of dawn whilst mucking out the stables!!!
I’ve now been playing out for over two years and I’ve been very lucky with the opportunities and fantastic gigs that I’ve had in that time . . . lets hope the good times continue.
How would you describe the Hannah Wild sound?
My sound is definitely hard House, I love chunky, driving beats and funky ass basslines. I’m very picky when it comes to choosing tunes and I’m pretty hard to please. No fillers go into my record bag, just massive, well thought out and highly produced tracks — that are a definite cut above the rest!
Celebrating your 21st birthday over the coming weeks, you’re still very young. What have the highlights of your career been to date?
I am indeed! I quite often forget how young I really am, and when I stop and think about the things I’ve managed to achieve already it puts a massive smile on my face.
I think the biggest highlight of my djing career so far has been landing the residency at Sundissential. It’s such a huge club, with a huge following and is one of the original hard house nights to boot, so it’s a great one to have on your CV!
I’ve been lucky enough to have played at some of my very favourite big room venues across the country, such as: the Fridge, SeOne, Heaven and Brixton Academy in London; The N.E.C and The Sanctuary in Birmingham; the Emporium in Coalville; Evolution in Leeds; The Old Fire Station; the Academy in Bristol; and a truck load more! An even bigger accomplishment was getting to play at my first festivals last summer, Escape To The Park in Swansea and West Fest in Weston Super Mare, as it had only been a few years before when I had been stood in a similar arena wishing I was up there!
One gig that really sticks in my head is my first gig for the legendary Goodgreef. I met Barry a good few years ago when I first went to his night in Manchester. I had only just started djing then and would loved to have played for him, but never thought I actually would, so when he booked me for his New Year’s Day event with Promise in Newcastle I was well excited. Oz had played the same gig the year before and told me that it was an excellent gig to play, so despite the five hour drive I had to actually get there, I thought bring it on! The event was held at a club called the Tuxedo Princess, which is a massive boat on the Tyne! When I got there the room was kicking right off and I couldn’t wait to get on and show the Geordies what I was made of, but I had a while to wait as I was doing the closing set.
It was finally time for me to get on the decks and my first track was Karim’s remix of ‘Billie Jean’!!! The whole crowd lurched forward towards me and started going wild, the set went seamlessly and it flowed and flowed and the clubbers got more and more excited . . . they didn’t want me to finish!!! I didn’t either really, but the club was closing and I had to turn it off. I thought best to hit the roads as soon as possible as I had a long drive back home, but I couldn’t get out for ages as I was signing soooooooo many autographs it was untrue!
I felt very honoured, a debut set couldn’t have gone any better. Other highlights for me have been meeting all the lovely people who’ve come to see me play; everywhere I go I get a wicked response from everyone and having clubbers chanting your name is something you don’t forget in a hurry!!!
Who have your favourite djs and producers been over the years? And who are thet now?
My top dj has always been Karim, his unique sound and dedication to his work is fantastic and it inspires me no end. Other djs I’ve always made the effort to see are the likes of Dave Randall, Steve Thomas, Superfast Oz, Nick Sentience, Phil Reynolds, Pete Wardman, Justin Bourne and Caroline Banx. Producers that I heavily rate and play big parts in my sets include OD404, Nick Sentience, Paul Maddox and from the new generation, guys such as DNG, Frank Farrell and Riggsy.
As well as playing hard dance, you’re also influenced by techno and psy trance. What techno and psy trance djs and producers do you rate at the moment?
I’ve found myself delving into psy trance and techno when there’s just not been a good supply of quality hard house. When there’s a dry spell or I feel my sets need a breath of fresh air I see where else I can find some tracks that really stand out.
I really dig psy tunes such as Delerious — ‘Beat Conductor’, X-Noize — ‘Gain Control’ and one of my very, very favourite psy tunes is Psysex — ‘Come In Peace’ (Illumination remix), I absolutely love it!!! Also the psy mix of ‘Tainted Love’ always gets me grooving and is a great opening tune to make sure everyone’s really listening, lol!
As for techno, I’m into a range of stuff from Ben Sims and Henrik B to Dave Randall, D.A.V.E. The Drummer and more recently Dom Sweeten under his El Durangoz guise.
At SW4 last year Carl Cox said “it’s all about tits and music!” What do you reckon, tits or music?
Personally I’d have to say music then tits!!! I mean it’s definitely all about the music, heck I wouldn’t be in this scene if it wasn’t, however, tits are a nice accessory to the cause.
You’re a resident of one of the few successfully ongoing hard house nights, Sundissential. How did this come about?
That’s right . . . I first played at Sundissential in February 2005, it was a verses night with Scream in Bristol, where I was resident at the time. Madders contacted me shortly after and booked me for an all girls night at The Canal Club in Wolverhampton, which was to be my debut set as their new resident.
It was a fantastic welcoming set, the venue was awesome as was the set up and most importantly the crowd — they were so warming and receptive!!! And lucky for me Charlotte got stuck in traffic, so my set was extended and I ended up playing for almost three hours — too much fun!
Since then I’ve played a string of wicked gigs for them such as Escape In The Park, the massive 9th birthday party and the NEC in Birmingham on new years eve. Madders and Danny are a huge support and such good guys to have behind you . . . roll on the next party!
You played at Goodgreef and Sundissential Norths Big Beef Reunion in Leeds for their bank holiday extravaganza. How did it go? Is it very different playing to a northern crowd than down south?
I’d been looking forward to this one for ages as I played for Goodgreef for the first time on New Year’s Day and it was one of the most enjoyable sets I’ve played. Sundissential North has a massive reputation, so being the Big Beef Reunion I knew it was going to be another good’n!
After the four hour drive there I finally got to the club about half an hour before I was on to find Kutski totally rocking our room, it was rammed! He’s got such a huge following that I wasn’t sure how the switch from his furious music back down to hard house was going to work, but the crowd stuck with it and I got a great response from my set.
I’ve been playing up north every couple of months in recent times and the northen lot are a great crowd to play to as they’re an incredibly friendly bunch. I don’t find that big a difference in the north and the south and I certainly don’t believe in the north/south divide!!!
You’ve dabbled in production. What tracks have you worked on so far? Do you have any new work in the pipelines?
Yeah I’ve worked on a few tracks now, the most recent being a techno edged Beastie Boys rework that Superfast Oz and I did with Riggsy, which has been getting a great response! I’ve also worked with Frank Farrell, who I did some Karim style hard house with. One of them ‘Sticklebrick’ (don’t even ask about the name . . . LOL!) is massive and always kicks right off. It’s had loads of support from Karim himself and guys such as Steve Maynard (Cheers guys!).
My first projects were with Mark Maitland; lots of people loved ‘Mainframe’ with its cheeky Acen — ‘Trip To The Moon’ riff, but this was made when I was playing a more funky techno and tech trance sound, so doesn’t really show my true colours so to speak.
I haven’t done any new tunes for a while now, but I hope to soon. Oz is currently in the middle of sorting out a home studio, so when that’s all sorted we’re sure to be firing out lots and lots of new bits — I can’t wait!
Being gorgeous and talented it must be difficult and exceedingly frustrating at times, when critics say you’re only where you are because of your looks. How do you manage to deal with such people on a regular basis without getting jaded?
Oh my god, thanks but I don’t know about that . . . you wouldn’t be saying that if you saw me in the mornings!!! But yes I do get a lot of negativity like that, but not so much these days thankfully, as more people have seen me play and usually once they have they change their minds/opinions and apologise to me.
Wouldn’t it make a whole lot more sense if they saw me first, then judged me? Anyway, I don’t let it get to me as I know its not true.
The simple fact is, djs are two a penny these days so you have, have, HAVE to be able to mix solidly or you just won’t survive. I myself couldn’t bring myself to mix in front of a huge audience if I knew I couldn’t hold a mix down. I work really hard to ensure my mixing matches up to the grade, yet all too often I feel as though I’m at the Grand National hearing djs who just aren’t quite ready for clubs — but no one seems to say anything about them?!
I think most people have a theory of beauty = no brains = easy target, which is why female djs suffer the most from these type of obnoxious comments. I’m all for free speech, so people can say as they please . . . I know all the negative stuff I read is all wrong and miles from the truth anyway!
I see loads and loads of really gorgeous gals, much more so than me in the clubs and they don’t get any shit as a clubber, so why should I as a dj?!
You’ve recently been voted in at number 91 in the shejay.net top 100 female djs. That’s quite an honour being so young! Do you reckon there’s a need for a top 100 female djs aside from the usual DJ Mag top 100, which is essentially male dominated?
Thank you! It’s all just a bit of fun isn’t it really? A lot of people had silly things to say about the poll but I thought it was a good idea, I mean everyone is always so keen to label women jocks as ‘Female DJs’, immediately separating them from their male counter partners, so why not have a poll all of our own?!
The Shejay Top 100 was made up of some wicked girlie djs from all over the world and to be honest I didn’t expect to see myself in amongst them. It was a nice suprise and it’s got to be a good thing hey?! Big thanks for those who voted for me.

Ahhh my lovely friends at Contagious and I have been working together for some time now. We first hooked up at Scream vs Sundissential early 2005 where we did a photo shoot to promote their clothes . . . I’d shied away from the camera for a good number of years so I was cacking it, but since then myself and Claire Contagious (who designs all those wicked outfits) have done a number of shoots together and even a big catwalk show (Eeeek!!!) and I’ve learnt that cameras aren’t that scary after all!
Amongst other things we’ve hosted events together, firstly over last August bank holiday at West Fest where we put on a Contagious arena and then we ran a series of nights at The Brunel Rooms in Swindon, with guests such as Phil Reynolds, Matt Hardwick, Caroline Banx and Superfast Oz.
As well as promoting and modeling for them I also turn my hand at writing for them, putting together features for their website. I supply them with interviews and features for their reviews page, the interviews always get a wicked response as I try to get information and gossip out of the djs that no one has before, hehe!
I don’t wear much Contagious stuff at the minute, I love their clothes but I’ve been trying to portray my real image as of late (you’ll most likely find me in some retro/funky get up!) as I think a lot of people got the wrong end of the stick with me wearing those skimpy outfits all the time!!!
Contagious were (and always will be!) my sponsors so it was my duty to promote the brand to the clubbers and that was what I was doing, not just trying to get gigs as a lot of people presumed.
What goals do you have for 2006? And beyond?
Well I’ve just moved to Brighton, so getting settled here is the main thing really. I’ve got my debut set here this month at a new night called Dirty Tricks, which is happening on the 26th at The Core Club. Getting my name known round these parts is one goal I guess!
I don’t have any major things that I’d like to accomplish right now, the relocation has been more than enough to keep me occupied! As long as the gigs keep flowing and I keep meeting those wicked and supportive fans out there I’ll be happy with where I am.
And with it being a slow year for clubland — in the sense that things have slowed down a bit, as it seems to be going back underground and less events are planned for the year — the only thing that I would like to take up a notch is producing. I’d like to get a lot more of my own material nailed down, hopefully some solo projects too and as soon as the studio at home is sorted this should be a winner.
Recently on HF there’s been a lot of discussion about Sweet Kelly’s jauntier into the world of djing. What do you think about someone like Kelly — who’s absolutely beautiful, but only been mixing for a year — being listed above the likes of BK and Jay Pidgeon on a flyer? Is it indeed a matter of, “if you’ve got it, flaunt it” or a blatant case of the promoters using sex to sell?
I brushed passed this particular thread the other day and I must admit I hadn’t heard of her til then. There were the usual comments and presumptions that she couldn’t mix from people that haven’t heard her play. Where the logic is in that, I don’t quite know, I’ll wait to hear her first before I pass judgement . . . others should too really.
But her mixing aside, I don’t agree with her being above Ben and Jay on the flyer. These are two top djs who have earned their positions on the dj ladder through years of hard work and commitment, so it’s hardly fair to be bumped down a peg on this flyer.
But then again, it’s just a bit of paper and it’s not the end of the world! Maybe she is good friends with the promoter and they’ve taken it under their wing to make her a star? There are plenty of wicked female djs out there nowadays, sex may have sold in clubland once upon a time but girly djs really do have to show everyone what they’re made of with their mixing skills and technique now and nothing else . . .
You used to be signed to TEK-DJs but you’re now with Airborne. What advice would you give up and coming djs on the trials and tribulations of getting gigs and dealing with promoters and agencies?
Well guys and galz, once you’re at the level of getting paid for your gigs you really do need to be on your toes, as too many djs end up getting paid less than the agreed fee or worse still not at all. The last thing you want is to be coming home from what is essentially work, out of pocket when you’ve taken the time and spent your money on travelling there and back (and buying records).
An agency is a good thing, if you can find the right one but be careful as they’re not all trustworthy and/or they’re just scams. Airborne is a wicked agency and I’m really happy to be on their books, as Oz has been with them for a number of years I know through him that they are 110% trustworthy and dedicated to the cause.
Whether you want an agent representing you or not is down to you. But be professional, take your gigs seriously and tackle them responsibly, do your homework — find out if there is a history of payment problems, try and get a booking fee, double check, even triple check, the agreed fee and always, always take an invoice to hand to the promoters. Just as with any industry it’s a tough world out there, so good luck!
When you’re not behind the decks, do you enjoy partying in front of them? What are your favourite clubs to party in?
Yeah too right! I don’t get to go out ‘clubbing’ very much these days; if I’m not djing then Oz is so we’re always in clubs, but it’s not really the right time for partying as such.
My favourite club to let my hair down in is and has always been Twist. I used to be there most weekends prior to being a jock, that was back in the days of Fire Club and I have to wicked memories of it. The music was always spot on in both rooms and the atmosphere was amazing.
I remember when they used to give out glow-necklaces, all of a sudden the whole dancefloor would be lit up with the orange glow from them . . . that sight always sticks in my mind. I hadn’t been able to get down there for ages due to gigging off round the country, so when Oz got his residency with them I was made up, as I’m back down there every month now and it feels as though I’ve come home, lol!
When you’re not making music, what do you get up to? How does an average day in the life of Hannah Wild go?
A usual days begins with that damn alarm clock going off at the crack of dawn, shortly followed by a race to get out of Brighton before the traffic slows me down! I can be found at the stables pretty much every morning (except for after a gig of course — ouch!). I’ll feed, muck out (yes I love getting my hands dirty!) and then ride.
I get back home around lunch time and the rest of the day is spent catching up on emails, surfing the net, shopping and having a good old sesh on the decks . . . then it’s about time for The Simpsons! Oh and then I get in the kitchen to knock up dinner for me and the better half!!!
What do you think of reports that say you and Oz are the Posh and Becks of clubland? Does it put pressure on your relationship having it in the public eye, or can you both have a laugh about it?
We both have a good laugh about it!!! I wouldn’t say it puts pressure on us, as it’s just a bit of fun really isn’t it. I mean, Oz doesn’t play football or wear skirts (not to my knowledge anyway?!) and the closest I come to Posh Spice is the fact that I too cannot sing . . .
Going out with a fellow dj and producer must have its own set of challenges. Do you share records or keep them separate? Who usually gets to choose what goes on the car stereo?
I would say that I usually get to choose what’s on the stereo, but it’s pretty equal really, unless of course he’s trying to hurt my ears by playing some dodgy old Elvis or Frank Sinatra then I have to draw the line!
As far as sharing records go, we do keep them separate but we play such similar sounds to each other and many of the same tracks feature in both our sets that it wouldn’t matter too much if we did pick up the wrong bag! It can be quite amusing when we’re playing at the same events as whoever is on first ends up playing all the tracks that the other was hoping to play, grrr...
What are your top 10 dance tracks of all time?
Wow that really is a tough one, I don’t think I could give you an answer, as there’s way too many tunes to choose . . . I could give you my top two, they’re not hard dance though — sorry!!! Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ and ‘Billie Jean’, savage choons!!!

This Friday night sees you play an exclusive birthday classics set at Electrolysis at the Factory. What can fans expect from your set? With it being your birthday, will you be mixing up some classics from previous birthdays with your current favourites? And will there be some techno and psy thrown in, or are you aiming for a hard dance set?
I’m really looking forward to this as I’m usually pretty slack when it comes to celebrating my birthday, in fact I don’t think I did anything for it last year!!! This year I’ve got no excuse so I’m really going to pull my finger out and what better way to kick start the celebrations than a birthday set?!
I haven’t played at the venue since it’s been the Factory, so it’ll be cool to get back behind the decks. I’m playing all hard house sets at the moment . . . from funky hard house through to filthy (but still uplifting!), so I should imagine it’ll be along those lines. A few classics will definitely be on the cards, possibly ‘Rock Da Spot’ for old time sakes!!! Any suggestions or requests, lemme know . . . ?!
If someone wants to buy you a birthday drink on Friday night, what should they get you?
A double vodka and coke and a shoot of Tuaca please!!! Well I guess that’s me out of driving already, woo . . .
