Global Gathering 2006 Day One

A train ride, 2 and a half ciders, half a bottle of wine, a pizza, a bottle of water, one taxi, a rather long walk, one very large field, a couple of confused security guards, one tent and even more cider. I think I’m ready to go. It’s Friday night. It’s Long Marston Airfield. We’re in the middle of nowhere and this is day one of Global Gathering 2006.
Apart from the dogs on the way in forcing various confused people to put their bags into an x-ray machine, it had been a rather uneventful journey into the picturesque Cotswolds on a hot and very sunny afternoon. After pitching our tent we made our way past the fair ground which we had been so nicely positioned next to and straight to the bar tent. A couple more ciders and some aftershocks and we were on our way again, weaving through the people on our way to the main arena. At the gates stood a line of security guards stopping anyone with a drink in their hands. For some strange reason you weren’t allowed to take your drinks from the camping area into the main arena. Considering you weren’t supposed to have brought your own drinks into the camping area, this made it all the more puzzling and indeed just seemed a cynical marketing ploy to make you buy even more drinks. Somebody later told me there was no problem bringing in your own drinks to the campsite so something to remember for next time. Down the hatch those ones went anyway and in we went.
To our left Andy Whitby was bouncing along on the Contagious Clubwear soundstage surrounded by a bevy of beauties bouncing around in their (surprisingly enough) Contagious Clubwear. We bounced along for some time to his hard beats before wandering off to take in the site. For those of you who have never been to a festival before or for those just not lucky enough to have visited Global, the site consisted of 7 main arenas (or extra large tents) 1 VIP area for those inclined to spend the extra £50 or so on top of the usual price, the outdoor beach area, 2 sponsored arenas (Aftershock and Strongbow), 4 soundstages, a comedy arena, a funfair and shops and god knows how many balloon stalls! It was big, not as big as somewhere like Glastonbury but certainly enough to put off those who don’t like walking. We’re even thinking of wearing pedometers next year to see how far we walk, but I digress.
We moved from area to area looking at each one and checking out the vibe. From The Essential Selection to Air to Electric to Global to the various soundstages each tent was bubbling under as people were finding their feet and the music was slowly building up. Well there’s not much point exhausting yourself in the first couple of hours! The beach stage was a hell of a lot smaller than it had been 2 years previous; the last time I was at Global they had deckchairs and a giant King Neptune smiling down at you. Down the back of the beach stage there led an alleyway to the VIP arena which had the hot tubs of last year shipped out and replaced by hammocks and a model ship instead. I know which one I would have preferred, especially in the searing heat.
After catching up with some of our fellow weekend ravers we settled on Grooverider playing some heavy drum and bass on the 1xtra stage until we decided a security guard was standing uncomfortably close (well right behind) to me but thanks to him we saw the very last of Sasha.

This led on to the main treat of the night for me. The very reason I had dragged myself out of work early, had bought a sleeping bag and was even going to buy a tent until I was offered the use of one. For the first time in 10 years Daft Punk would be playing to a UK audience and there was no way I was going to miss this show. I stood slack jawed as the two robots grooved their way through track after track standing a top a triangle. The music moved over me in waves as they moved through well known tracks like ‘Technologic’, ‘Around The World’, ‘One More Time’, ‘Harder — Better — Faster — Stronger’ and ‘Robot Rock’ before finishing off with ‘Da Funk’. I was shocked, dumbfounded, knocked for six. In fact there is not enough space and there is certainly no way of describing adequately how good they were. So why don’t you listen for yourself. I’ve managed to find a recording of the set they played, as recorded at the Coachella Valley festival in California this year. It’s the same set so get in there and enjoy!
Daft Punk Heaven
After that we managed to stagger back to the tent to take some time out before heading back for the Silent Disco. Now it’s certainly an interesting angle: provide your clubbers with headphones and get them to listen to the dj on those, rather than pump the sound out through speakers. But try as we could, we couldn’t find this place. Maybe because it was too quiet, maybe it was that there were no signs; maybe it was because most of the lights were turned off in the festival area, but by the time we got to the spot, the silent disco was no more. Why not we asked? Nobody came, was the reply, so we closed early. Right then just what might have been the problem? We wandered back to our tents and crashed out to the sounds of the funfair.
