Vaccine preview with M.I.K.E., Johan Gielen & Ronald van Gelderen

Reported by Vaccine / Submitted 30-08-06 12:32

Friday 1st September sees The Gallery welcome one of its fast becoming legendary backrooms to host the whole club for a one night spectacular. Vaccine will be taking over the main room for the first time, bringing one of the most unique trance line-ups witnessed in the UK to Turnmills.

Started in April 2005 in the Anexo bar of Turnmills; Vaccine’s aim was to showcase the best trance djs from the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark and the rest of Europe. The Thursday nights saw djs such as Ernesto vs Bastian, Simon Patterson aka Dogzilla, Paul Masterson, Michael Splint, Misja Helsloot, Phynn, Goldenscan and Kuffdam make headline appearances alongside a wide selection of young talent, bedroom djs, established residents and stars of tomorrow. The success of the night saw it move from the Anexo bar into the intimate surroundings of T2 (Turnmills legendary second room) in May 2005 with its monthly Thursday nights attracting over 200 trance fans to witness the stars of tomorrow from all around Europe. Collaborations with the likes of Serious in August 2005 showed how quickly the night had become synonymous with quality and established in the scene as a whole.

The success of the night and its forward thinking vision quickly attracted Danny Newman and The Gallery team’s attention and after only nine months Vaccine was asked to work alongside and promote a room at arguably one of the best trance night’s in the UK, The Gallery @ Turnmills. Vaccine launched at The Gallery in February 2006, taking over the T3 room once a month to showcase their successful combination of rising local talent with specialist big name djs in intimate surroundings.

September 2006 sees Vaccine take over the whole of The Gallery for a one-off special, showcasing three rooms of music. This invitation by one of the leading club nights in the world shows how far the promotion has come in such a short space and how far it has the potential to go. Come on and join the ride!

Ahead of this massive party on Friday 1st September we caught up with three stars of the main room. Enter stage left M.I.K.E., Johan Gielen and Ronald van Gelderen….

M.I.K.E. (PUSH)

Hi M.I.K.E., how’s life with you been so far this year?

Really good, I’ve been busy in the studio, djing around the planet and I released my first album under my M.I.K.E. guise!

You’re playing at Vaccine’s big one off event at The Gallery on September 1st with a PUSH retrospective set, what can we expect from the set and are you looking forward to playing some of your older, more varied stuff?

It’s the more credible stuff I’m going to play, the beats and riffs people know when they hear the intro coming up. And it’s cool to see that the party peeps still can feel one with my past club anthems, which is great.

You’ve consistently pushed the boundaries with your productions and sounds, where do you think the scene is going in terms of the musical direction? What do you describe your new sound as?

Innovative, I guess, haha! No seriously, I just try to do my own thing nowadays and trying to avoid hype or the mainstream. That’s what every dj or artist should do, work straight from the heart and for the love of the music.

Who for you are the new breed of talent in terms of djs and producers coming through as well?

I don’t have any, in every style of music there is somehow one that will lead the way, but I like what D. Ramirez is doing, or Mason, and even SVD.

You tour diary reads like a departure board at an airport. Which country have you been to this year that has really impressed you?

My early Aussie tour back last December 2005. It’s always great to go down under, I love Australia. But I played many good gigs this year, like my 4 monthly residencies here at the Gallery, which is always fun to do.

After achieving all you have achieved in the scene are there are any goals, targets or ambitions that you have yet to fulfil or have set yourself?

I will just continue what I’m doing. My aim is to make people happy with what I do, and what I achieve with it at the end is a bonus! I really love my job.

What else have you got coming up this year? This is your chance to plug anything coming up!

Studio studio studio, lots of release coming up, projects with my buddy Andrew Bennett, a new Active Sight with Fred Baker and a new collaboration with Columbian talent Santiago Nino.

Johan Gielen

Johan, good to catch up with you! How’s life with you?

Life’s treating me well, I am busy performing/playing and also spending a lot of time with the preparations of my album release.

You are playing the main room of Vaccine’s massive one off event at The Gallery, Turnmills on Friday 1st September to launch your new album. For those who have never had the pleasure, tell us what we can expect from your set and from the new album?

People can expect a musical journey with of course many tracks off my new album!!!

This will be your first time playing at Turnmills and for Vaccine, are you looking forward to it?

For sure! I have heard a lot of good things about this club!

Vaccine is all about discovering new talent and bringing djs and producers to the UK who no one else will. Who for you is the new breed of talent emerging on the scene now?

That’s a difficult question, because I normally don’t really have opinions about other djs. If I would have to say a name, it would be Misja Helsloot, also from The Netherlands.

You’re regularly play some of the biggest festivals and events in the world including Sensation. Which do you prefer: an intimate room of about a 1000, or a massive arena of about 25,000?

I like both, but I find that smaller parties often have more atmosphere that large events.

And can we expect any more big tunes from your studio in the future? If so, can you give us the low-down on what to expect?

Since my album is ready, I now have some more time to do some studio work, like remixing tracks. The last one I did was Nalin & Kane’s ‘Open your Eyes’, which was well received by other djs.

Ronald van Gelderen

Once again we welcome with open arms Vaccine favourite Dutch superstar Ronald van Gelderen to grace our decks for the big one on 1st Sept 2006. You kicked-off Vaccine as part of the Gallery in T3 back in Feb 2006. How has the summer been for you and what lies in store for the rest of the year?

The summer has been once again, crazy for me this year. Ibiza Amnesia, Tunisia, Russia, Poland, and of course in Holland the Festivals like Dance Valley and Fast Forward Parade.

How does it feel to come back as our overseas resident time after time for Vaccine’s biggest nights at The Gallery?

It feels good. I really enjoyed the last time I played for Vaccine, so I’m sure it’s gonna rock again this time!

Whenever I speak to you, you’re always really hectic, juggling about ten things at once, what with production, remixes, djing and life away from the studio. Do you ever relax?

No not really. But that’s ok because my work is also my hobby so I enjoy what I do. But when I don’t have to play I’m in the studio. Hahaha . . . how do they call it? A workaholic?!

Who is, or are in your opinion leading the way in the scene at the moment in terms of productions and djing? (and yes you can say me of you want!)

Marco V, Steve Angello, Sander van Doorn and me of course . . . hehehe!

Can you recall anything that got you mad when you have been behind the decks in a club?

I don’t get mad easily, but there are still some idiots out there that ask for R&B or hip hop when they know that they are at a dance night! Don’t get me wrong, I love hip hop but some people just don’t get it!

The most embarrassing thing I have done at a gig is to call a sound technician to the booth because I couldn’t hear any sound through the headphones — I hadn’t noticed that they were not plugged in! What have you done behind the decks that makes you cringe?

Not that I can remember. After 13 years of djing I’m ok most of the times.

If you were told that you could only take five tracks with you to a gig, which ones would you take?

Ronald van Gelderen — ‘This Way’
Marco V — ‘Calling The Shots’
Yello — ‘Oh Yeah’ (Sander van Doorn mix)
Marc Romboy — ‘Bodyjack’ (DJ Delicious mix)
And of course, The Prodigy — ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ (To really fuck the whole place up!!!

When you’re doing the hoovering or washing-up, what do you listen to?

I don’t listen to music while I’m hoovering. The problem with hoover machines is that they make a lot of noise!

More: THE GALLERY PRESENTS VACCINE

Friday 1st September sees The Gallery welcome one of its fast becoming legendary backrooms to host the whole club for a one night spectacular. Vaccine will be taking over the main room for the first time bringing one of the most unique trance line-ups witnessed in the UK.

Having started life as a Thursday night trance party at Turnmills, Vaccine joined The Gallery in February 2006 and has been hosting the 3rd room every month with cutting edge trance line-ups packed with UK debuts and exclusives. So far, the likes of Cosmic Gate, Ronald van Gelderen, Yves Deruyter, Kuffdam and Plant, Kyau vs Albert, Martin Roth, Alex Morph, Fred Baker, Phynn and many more have already graced the decks.

The main room welcomes a truly international mix of legends and future greats assembled for one night only. DJ Yahel touches down from Israel for a very rare UK appearance, having produced some of the massive trance classics including ‘Voyage’, ‘Devotion’, ‘Skywalker’ and 'Open Your Mind'. Yahel is now famed for his more melodic, Psy trance sets and is heavily in demand worldwide. M.I.K.E. will be jetting in from Holland to play an exclusive PUSH classics set showcasing why his PUSH sound has always set the standard for quality trance productions. This is a very rare chance to see a whole set of PUSH material from the man himself. Johan Gielen will be making his Gallery / Vaccine debut to launch his new album ‘Revelations’. Johan is a regular at the biggest festivals worldwide including Sensation and Dance Valley as well as regularly producing dancefloor destroyers whether on his own or with Svenson and Gielen such as ‘Beauty of Silence’ or ‘Twisted’. Joining them will be Ronald van Gelderen, having kick started Vaccine at The Gallery in February 2006 as the first guest. Ronald returns to take up his quarterly residency with Vaccine to show why he truly is the next big thing from Holland. His new track ‘This Way’ is one of this years anthems and has been a regular at the likes of Cream in Amnesia all summer. Vaccine residents and promoters The Viceroy and Ben Beaton complete the main room line up.

The 3rd room sees Vaccine present another unique line-up in the shape of a producer’s special with Lange headlining bringing his Absolute Lange show to town for the last time ever. One of the most consistent producers of the trance generation, Lange will be showcasing his entire back catalogue for one very special performance. Marc van Linden joins him and is one of Paul van Dyk’s top tips for the future. With his new album ‘My Way’ about to drop and a string of massive tunes and remixes including ‘Until Monday’ and ‘Forbidden Love’ under his belt, he truly is one to watch. Joining him will be partners in crime from the new wave of producing talent. Both John O Callaghan and Greg Downey have come to typify the new breed of trance talent out there. John has become a production machine churning out some of the biggest tunes of the last 12 months including ‘Vendetta’ and his collaborations including ‘Exactly’ and ‘Restricted Motion’. Tipped by the trance establishment including Armin van Buuren, John will be playing alongside fellow Discover signing Greg Downey who has seen a meteoric rise with productions including ‘Vivid Intent’ and ‘KIA’ being supported by all the big jocks including Eddie Halliwell on Radio 1.Greg has also been busy djing around the globe from sets in Germany to China to Canada. Joining them will be rising stars Ben Gold and new Anjunabeats signing Dan Stone.

Over in T2 we welcome QuarTech, a new occasional party at The Gallery. Quartech will feature four of London’s most talented young DJs and producers, Anil Chawla, Tim Davison, Mark Sun and Dale Anderson - all of whom have graced the decks at Turnmills many times before and are fast building a reputation as ones to watch on the international scene. As well as consistently rockin’ the more discerning dancefloors around town, all four are dab hands in the studio and have released a selection of outstanding releases and remixes, both solo and in collaboration, on labels like Saved, Renaissance, Hope, Plastic Fantastic, Segment, Fakt, Duty Free and many more. Chances are that if you’ve heard everyone from Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo and Nic Fanciulli to Paul van Dyk over the last six months they’ve played a track by one of our four heroes and they have plenty more dancefloor bombs lined-up. This exciting new night will provide a showcase of what they’re all about in one of London’s most famous dancefloor spaces and it should turn into one helluva party too!! QuarTech is the sound of the future and not to be missed.
