An original tidy Girl. A musical institution. A hard house legend. dj, producer, party animal extraordinaire. A fanatical following. World wide dance floor devotees. The one. The only. Ladies and gentlemen, she may not need an introduction but she damn well deserves one — Lisa Pin-Up!
In a world where female djs still have to fight to prove their musical credentials, especially if, God forbid, they happen to be good looking (since when did anyone ever mix with their face??), Lisa Pin-Up hasn’t just blazed a trail, she’s practically torched the whole forest! After more than a decade storming through our lives as one of the most enigmatic, up-for-it entertainers we could hope to have in our weekends, she shows absolutely no signs of letting up.
We pitched the questions to her as she prepares to take part in the massive tidy Leeds event at the newly refurbished and oh-so-gorgeous Mission nightclub on Friday September 22nd.

You’re playing with the Tidy Boys, Rob Tissera, Paul Maddox and GRH at the newly refurbished Mission in Leeds on Friday September 22nd. Are you looking forward to popping the sound system’s cherry?
I can’t wait! I have not played Leeds for so long that I have got withdrawal symptoms. I have so many people emailing me through my web site www.lisapin-up.comasking me when am I going to be playing back up that way as they have not heard me for a while, and to be djing for Tidy and along side such amazing djs, the night is going to be huge!
Do you find a northern crowd different to play to than, say, a southern crowd?
No not really, I think one party person is the same as any other, and that goes for clubbers all around the world.
Have you got anything special lined up for tidy Leeds, like any new production material?
I have just been working on two new tunes, I like to stretch my new projects over to tracks, then I can get my mainstream hands in the air anthem of the night on one, and then get my nasty naughty ideas out on the other side, more banging and hard. Well just finished two of these kind of tracks and only just been road testing them. I always get so excited about my latest productions, always thinking it is the best I have ever produced until I go back in the studio and make my next one! The latest are called ‘Feel the Beat’ which is the big party tune with has a big bassline but with a huge trance build-up, then my next tune is called ‘Psycho Manic’ which is quite a hard tune but still uplifting and cheeky.
Okay, that’s all the business done with, let’s get personal! Where did you grow up?
I live in a place called Enfield, on the outskirts of London.
What was your childhood like?
Well no stories of a trouble childhood and make it from rags to riches, just a bog standard childhood, just like any other kid really.
What were you like at school?
I was a bit of a rebel and hated to conform to anything. I was always the kid that thought they were too cool for school and bunked off lessons most of the time. I had cropped bright orange hair and got told off quite a lot for wearing bright punk colour eye shadows. Anyone who knows me though knows I am a bit of a cheeky devil so even though I was really naughty, the teachers did sort of like me and just really left me alone.
Was your husband Peter your first ever boyfriend?
Even though I meet Peter when I was 16, I thought I had seen it and done it all by then! Looking back I was very young, but no he was not my first boyfriend, I had one at 4, we used to hold hands in the playground .
Where you a big Madonna fan? Are you now?
Not really, but I did admire her attitude and fashion.
Who did you have plastered all over your bedroom walls when you were a teenager?
My goodness this sounds very strange telling you this but I only had one poster, a huge one of Christopher Lee dressed up as Dracula!

Were you in the Brownies?
No, I would have thought that very un-cool.
Were you a tomboy or a princess?
I was such a tomboy, as a little girl I hated dollies and when my mum bought me a toy pram with a doll, I chucked out the doll and put a brick in instead, which I used to push around (don’t ask me now why!). My favourite past time was digging holes in the garden! There is still a huge one at my Dad’s house that I dug.
Speaking of Princesses, what’s your opinion of Nikki from this year’s Big Brother – annoying or hilarious?
I never watched Big Brother, I think they pick people that are a bit mentally unstable that are used as a circus for us to laugh at. I did love the celebrity one though, don’t mind having a laugh at their expense as they can handle it and it’s good to see them out of their comfort zone.
Keeping on the royal theme, you are one of the original queens of the dance floor. You, Anne Savage, Lisa Lashes and Rachel Auburn, you were doing it for yourselves and the rest of the female population way before the Spice Girls confused the nation with the word ‘zigazigah!’. The Tidy Girls EP came out ten years ago — do you see yourself being around in another ten?
Yes I honesty think I can see it, anyone who sees me dj can see I am loving it just as much as ever! I live breath and eat clubbing! Suppose I will have to slow down a little bit, have a family and the like, but sod it, the kids will have to fit around the my dj’ing, in fact they can come along too!
You made quite a significant shift in your musical style recently, although it’s still bouncy it’s also a lot harder and filthier. Do you think reinventing yourself from time to time is healthy for a dj to do?
Well it’s not something I have done consciously. If you listen to my sets, the same old Lisa Pin-Up is there, I have not gone over to the dark side, still like my party up for it music, but obviously the old Bonk Bonk bounce style is so out of date now and even though I love my off beat basslines, I am just loving them hard dirty and loud! So still bounce but just a lot more modern.
Also I am taking a lot more notice of the quality of tracks, loving tracks that sound bright and crisp along with massive kick and bass. On a lot of old hard house tracks the quality was just so poor. Even if a track is good I can notice that a poor sounding track does have an effect on the dancefloor, so I just don’t play these tracks now.
There’s definitely an electro sound that’s creeping into everything including hard house and giving it a filthy, dirty edge that everyone’s loving. As a producer do you get excited when a new sound starts to emerge because it gives you something fresh to play and work with?
When I say I like it filthy, I am only talking basslines, but I am not so much into the electro sounds, don’t find it uplifting enough, but that is just my personal opinion. Trends don’t really effect me, I just do what I do and as long as I see the dancefloor happy I think I will stick to my own guns as playing from my own heart is what has got me to the stage I am now.

Do you get fed up of always being described as one of the original tidy Girls, or is it a badge that you wear with pride?
I love it, it is such an institution now. I was having a beer with Anne Savage recently and we both said when we first was asked to do it and when down to tidy studios, we just never realised how huge it was going to be. I keep mementoes for my career, and the tidy Girls was a big part of my history that I am so glad to be part of.
You are legendary for your dressing up as much as your sets. What was the most outrageous costume you ever put together?
I just live for the weekend and getting all dressed up is just a big part of going out for me. I remember when I was a clubber spending a whole week working out what I was going to wear at the weekend and getting so excited about it. My Mum calls me a scruff bag during the week as I can’t really be bothered, as only the weekends matter to me, don’t think most of my family have ever even seen me in make-up or out of a pair of trousers! (so don’t expect to ever recognise me if you see me in Tescos!).
Well getting back to your question, when I was a clubber before being a dj, I planned to go to this club called White Trash, it was a mixed gay club that was very flamboyant and asked you to dress up in outrageous outfits. Well I went in this see-through red dress which looked like a nighty, with Vivienne Westwood platform shoes. I was in the club for some time and was getting some really strange looks, so much so everyone around me was talking about me. Only when I started to hear some rapping and talk overs from the dj me and Pete realised that the original night had actually been cancelled and they had put on a garage night instead! Whoops!!! We did laugh after, and very quickly made our exit!
A lot of people remember you singing out to the crowd with all the vocals — did you sing in front of your mirror with a hairbrush when you were a kid? What was your favourite tune to sing to then and now that you’re all grown up?
I can’t really ever remember doing this, but as a clubber I remember I always wanted to buy the tunes that I heard at the weekend and learn all the words to a track just to sing along to.
Do you do Karaoke?
No not really, even though I get up in front of all those people at the weekend and do my stuff, I can be a bit shy about things like that.
Tell us something about yourself that we would never in a million years guess.
I can’t really think of anything, I am such an open person that what you see is what you get, a bit loud, likes a party and the problem with me is I am so honest that I just blurt everything out anyway.

It’s Back!
