The Gallery, the dj and the chef — Gavyn Mytchel returns to HF

Reported by benz / Submitted 24-11-06 01:54

Gavyn Mytchel is resident at one of the UK’s biggest and best club nights The Gallery at Turnmills in London, where he regularly plays alongside some of the biggest and best names including Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, Hernan Cattaneo and Tall Paul to name but a few. He also presents the hugely popular Gallery Sessions on Ministry of Sound Radio every Friday night and has made guest appearances and mixes on BBC’s Radio 1. He also plays an important part in the behind-the-scenes running of The Gallery, and ensuring that it retains its reputation as one of the UK’s most forward-thinking club nights. For the third year running, The Gallery teams up with HeatUK for another huge Brixton Academy NYE party — with Gavyn in full effect in the main arena.

Gavyn was picked as one of the original Mixmag Future Heroes and is regularly seen touring the world playing countries such as Singapore, China, Russia and America among many others. Not only a dj and radio show host Gavyn’s productions can be found in the record bags of the worlds biggest djs and signed to some of the worlds best record labels . . . including Armada, NOYS, JOOF, Mondo and seeing support from the likes of Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Hernan Cattaneo, Ferry Corsten, Tall Paul and countless others. This all-round approach to dj’ing, producing and promoting has seen him quickly rise up the ranks of the dance music industry and have ensured that his name has been spread far and wide across the globe. “I’m responsible for booking the djs for the main room, working on tours, hosting The Gallery radio show every Friday night from 8pm till 10pm on Ministry of Sound radio and most recently working on a brand new Gallery Live compilation,” he says on the subject of his role at The Gallery, which takes place every single Friday night at Turnmills. “It’s a job in which what you do changes every week as you are always working on new things.”

The “new things” Gavyn speaks of don’t just concern the new challenges and various different elements of promoting that he has to get his hands dirty with, but also the variety of new djs that The Gallery plays every year. With 52 events to put on, there’s a lot of slots to fill and a lot that needs to be taken into consideration in constructing an interesting, diverse line-up, week in, week out. “Being a weekly club night we have lots of scope to really experiment with line-ups and constantly put on the best djs whether established or up and coming. It’s all about taking risks, mixing it up and making sure the music and atmosphere progresses and is not only cutting edge but is wicked. It’s a formula that is working really well being as we are one of the few weekly nights left and are constantly finding some of the best new talent such as Sander van Doorn who we gave his first UK set to.”

It’s quite astounding the list of talents that The Gallery have helped to break as djs in the UK over the years — Timo Maas, Sander Kleinenberg, Corvin Dalek, Benny Benassi, Lottie, Tall Paul, Nic Fanciulli... the list of influential figures who have all broken the British audience at the club just goes on and on. And what was once solely a London thing has now become a national phenomenon, spreading the club’s influence even further.

The last 2 years have seen the legendary London institution expand outside of its base in the capital to host events across the country. “This year we have been doing The Gallery on Tour including several residencies at the Honey Club in Brighton, Mission in Leeds as well as a massive one off event at Nation in Liverpool and hosting an arena at the Love Leeds Festival where I played alongside Judge Jules, Marco V and Sander van Doorn and many more. All of them are just like The Gallery in London — wicked djs in cool venues playing the best dance music around. We have had some brilliant nights and are already working on more Gallery nights next year so watch out for those!”

The year culminates with their massive collaboration with HeatUK at Brixton Academy on New Year’s Eve for the 3rd year running — always a roadblock event. “Our NYE with Heat is always a massive affair. We love doing it and it’s always a busy, excitable and wicked crowd. Last year I played just before Marco V and we are expecting an even bigger one this year. The line-up is a top one with Above and Beyond, Tall Paul, M.I.K.E. (Push), Rob Tissera and many more. Personally I’ll be playing a bit later than normal this year, so expect some big room tunage as well a few exclusive bootlegs. I always look forward to Tall Paul’s sets and especially in a space like Brixton Academy... so I’ll be checking him out cos he’s the Guv’nor in more than one way!”

2006 has been another great year for The Gallery. Every week there’s something on the line-up that catches the eye — be it techno, trance, prog, electro or house, the rosters never cease to impress. I quizzed Gavyn on his highlights from the last 11 months at the club. “It had to be warming up for Paul van Dyk from 12 ‘til 2 in September... I had a wicked time and the whole place was electric. It was one of the most up for it crowds we have ever had and my special intro edit tore the roof off. The only downside was the recorder wasn’t working to record it! We have had some wicked sets this year from guest djs. I really enjoyed the residents special in October where we had all the boys in the main room: Sander van Doorn, Tall Paul, John Askew, The Viceroy and myself. Vaccine was doing the back room so all the Discover boys were down with Sean Tyas and it was one big party all night long... and oh yeah the music was ace!”

Vaccine is one of the several brands that host rooms at The Gallery on a regular basis, with the likes of Kinetc (techno) and Prehab (prog/electro/trance) joining them alongside in-house brands such as Curfew Time (King Unique’s shindig) and Tania Von Pear’s globe-trotting house-fest Going Places. They add another fresh dimension to the line-ups, combining special guests with carefully-chosen breakthrough talent.

Gavyn’s keen to point out that he’s got more than just the Turnmills clubs nights keeping him busy. “I am really looking forward to next year as we have loads lined up not only for The Gallery but also personally. I have been busy back in the studio with a double EP on NOYS coming up, ‘Neural Network’ and ‘Eye Typer’ as well as a remix for Lange vs Gareth Emery’s big new track ‘Another You Another Me’. I am also starting a new record label as a side project with Tim Davison called De-Coda, which will be focusing on the more proggy elements that I and Tim are producing and will feature my new track ‘Dark Spark’ which has been a major feature in Hernan Cattaneo’s sets of late.”

The “proggy elements” he speaks of signify a slight departure from his usual big room trance stylings, and look set to add another string to his bow. Meanwhile there’s also The Gallery triple CD he’s helping compile to commemorate the club’s twelve birthday next year — set to feature one disc from Gavyn, one from Tall Paul, and a Gallery classics CD. Well it would be rude not to really wouldn’t it?

The dj lifestyle doesn’t appear to have taken its toll on Gavyn yet. He practises a healthy lifestyle during the week to fend off the after-effects of late nights and jetlegs — and as he told HF in his debut interview, he’s not big on public transport. “I do still walk everywhere and am regularly swimming as well as teaching The Gallery crew the importance of a balanced and nutritious diet!”

His adult life hasn’t always revolved around the hectic schedule of a dj, promoter and producer, but he’s been a bit of a night owl ever since his days as a chef saw him working long hours. Not so long ago he revisited those days when a London dance music magazine asked him to feature on their dj cookery page. “It gave me a chance to dig out my old cheffing gear and put it on again. Those days were wicked, being a chef then legging it from work to go clubbing and now being involved in the dance scene so much, it’s important not to lose that excitement of being out clubbing, going out and enjoying yourself — as that is what got most of us into it.” An encouraging ethos that lies at the heart of why The Gallery do what they do — they want to enjoy their events as much as their crowd do. And why the hell not eh?

More: One of London’s most established and spectacular New Year’s Eve parties brings you the mother of all NYE sessions on SUNDAY 31ST DECEMBER, as HEATUK and THE GALLERY join forces to present HEATNYE: THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY at the CARLING BRIXTON ACADEMY. As London’s premier live music venue, The Academy has a long tradition for showcasing the biggest bands on the planet. Running parallel to that success over the past 5 years has been HEATNYE – the only club promoters in the capital capable of pulling off a sell-out show for 4,500 PEOPLE at one of the world’s most prestigious venues. Split over 4 ARENAS and featuring up to 30 DJS, HEATNYE offers you everything you could ever wish for from a New Year’s Eve party, but without that let down feeling come kick out time. The MIDNIGHT COUNTDOWN (featuring a mind-blowing pyrotechnic display) is worth the entrance fee alone and that’s without mentioning any of this year’s headline guests. Ok, so here goes…

At the top of the stack is ABOVE & BEYOND - undoubtedly the world’s most exciting new trance DJ/Producers of the past 5 years and the UK’s answer to the Dutch big guns like Armin, Ferry and Tiesto. Their genre-defining productions (mostly released on their own ANJUNABEATS label) have become an essential tool for the globe's leading DJs and in the process have set the benchmark for the new generation of dance music producers. This incredible threesome have just smashed their way into the NO.9 spot at this year’s DJ MAG’S TOP 100 POLL and they’re still on the trajectory, so who knows how far they can go… In 2004, they scooped Radio 1’s ‘ESSENTIAL MIX OF THE YEAR’ and since then have enjoyed a meteoric rise to the top, culminating in six nominations at last year's International Dance Music Awards in Miami. Earlier this year Above & Beyond released their debut artist album, ‘TRI-STATE’, to critical acclaim and having made a number of exclusive London appearances at The Gallery here in London town, the boys up the ante with this extra special NYE slot. Joining them will be The Gallery’s superstar resident, the one and only TALL PAUL. After another hectic year of touring and production, the big fella remains at the very top of his game and having missed out on playing at last year’s event (having blown the roof off the Academy in 2004), he can’t wait to be back. Neither can we. Fellow Gallery resident and host of The Gallery Radio Show (MOS Radio) GAVYN MYTCHEL also figures, as do dance music heavyweights ROB TISSERA (Kissdafunk) and the much-loved Dutchman, M.I.K.E – who’ll be dropping an exclusive PUSH CLASSICS SET featuring every single one of his global smash hit tunes including ‘UNIVERSAL NATION’, ‘STRANGE WORLD’ and ‘THE LEGACY’. HEATUK also welcome their own beloved residents to the mix, with IAN BETTS at the controls for the all important Midnight rush and MARC FRENCH firing up the floor later on, plus support comes from rising star AARON BASKERVILLE.

Elsewhere in the Academy, more mischief can be found with the 3 other rooms blasting out the good time NYE beats. First up is the FOYER; hosted by one of the London’s hottest new promoters of 2006 – PARTY PROACTIVE. Housed every quarter at Turnmills, Party Proactive have broken through the ranks, combining an unparalleled atmosphere with hugely credible line-ups across the hard dance, electro, breaks and house scenes. For this NYE collaboration Party Proactive have gone for the jugular with techno pioneer CHRISTIAN SMITH (Smith & Sellway) jetting in to join the hard-edged loving NICK SENTIENCE, PETE WARDMAN and old skool fave TREVOR ROCKCLIFFE. Party Proactive regulars THE *TING*, JACOB MOSS and STEELO also get fully involved. The BALCONY BAR will this year be hosted by house merchants AFFINITY & STEREOLOJIK, with the jackin’, tribal sounds of NEVER ENOUGH & FUNDAMENTAL entertaining the VIP BAR.

HEATNYE is of course brought to you by the people behind London’s most successful summer dance weekender – SOUTH WEST FOUR and GET LOADED IN THE PARK, as part of the METRO WEEKENDER. This August Bank Holiday witnessed a sell-out crowd of 40,000 arriving on CLAPHAM COMMON for the 3rd year in a row, with a further 20,000 people attending the first ever METRO WEEKENDER IN CARDIFF which also sold out in record time. In addition, HEATUK host some of the craziest parties in town – including their recent 5th Birthday bonanza at Koko, whilst THE GALLERY continue to bring London the finest house/trance/techno DJs every Friday night at TURNMILLS. Voted ‘BEST LONDON CLUB’ for the past 2 years, The Gallery remains the only night down south where you’ll catch the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold and Armin Van Buuren in action and with their 12th Birthday on the horizon the club remains as youthful and influential as its always been.
