Party Proactive introduce their Antiworld Open Air Festival arena: interview with Yves Deruyter
Reported by Joanna McEwen

You know when the Discogs entry for a producer hits over 66 pages that here’s someone who’s serious about their music. And when that entry spans back to 1992 you know that here’s someone with real passion. And when said list includes tracks that have helped define a genre, you know you’re looking at someone who really is rather good at what they do. But if I mention the word Bonzai I can only be talking about one person — Yves Deruyter.
From Brussels, Yves, alongside his second guise of Cherrymoon, has been producing and DJing for over 20 years and in that time notched up an equal amount of respect under both names. From tracks such as ‘Animals’, ‘The Rebel’ and the massive ‘Back to Earth’ and ‘Born Slippy’, Yves’ ability over the years to create quality hard, melodic and progressive trance is illustrated through the success of his golden and triple platinum selling CDs. With an Yves Deruyter track having made it onto pretty much every trance chart going, inclusion on mix CDs as diverse as those by Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia’s Global Underground, Judge Jules and Gatecrasher, and collaborations with producers as varied as M.I.K.E. John Digweed and John the Dentist, it’s no wonder his DJ bookings take him from the USA, Australia and back to Europe’s raves, including I Love Techno, the Berlin Love Parade, Antwerp Is Burning, ID&T’s Black Sensation and now the massive Party Proactive Arena on the 6th July for Antiworld’s Live Electronic Music and Arts Festival — awesome!!
Whilst he’s capable of playing many styles under the umbrella of trance, Yves Deruyter’s music becomes, in my opinion, exceptional when he’s allowed to unleash the Beast. His big sound is going to be the perfect accompaniment to the pounding of the earth beneath our dancing feet in the Party Proactive tent! With the countdown for the Antiworld Outdoor Experience well and truly underway, it’s time to get to know the man a little better…
Over the years you’ve worked with a couple of other producers like Frederico Santini and more recently M.I.K.E. Are you still collaborating with them?
Unfortunately no, because Frederico stopped producing and Mike wanted to go his own way. But there’s no stress, I now work with other good producers.
I also read that you were working on a project with Ian Van Dahl. What’s the concept behind this project?
? ? ? I don’t know anything about that. Years ago we tried to do something but in the final there was nothing. Maybe in the future…
According to my research, ‘Infinity’ was your last release in Jan 2006. Can you tell me more about this track and the vocalist?
It’s my same vocalist as on ‘Born Slippy’. The bad part of ‘Infinity’ is that the first version was the best with something from Coldplay inside, but we had to cancel that version.
What have you been up to since then?
I’ve been in the studio making a lot of new tracks… And also doing a lot of DJing.
Do you have another album on the cards?
Yes and it’s coming soon, with old and new tracks.
Your last mix album ‘Timeless Trance Vol. 2’ was released back in 2005 in Germany and prior to that you mixed several albums, including a battle of the DJs mix with Mark EG in 2001, which sounds very interesting: how did that come about?
Mark did some stuff with Bonzai records, and played at a few of their parties. They asked us to make a battle CD, which we did as I know Mark very well. I also did one with DJ Ghost in 2002.
Do you have a new mix in the pipeline?
Every month I have new mixes because I play on two radio shows — Top Radio Belgium and DI.fm.
Remix-wise you’ve been involved in some very important productions, but of great note to me is the legendary hard trance classic that inspired a generation and no doubt played a big part in the hoover sound of UK hard house — ‘Are Am Eye’ by Commander Tom — which you originally remixed originally back in 1995. How did it feel to be a part of the scene at that time?
It feels like heaven, hehe. It’s wonderful that I was there in that moment. I started DJing in 1989–1990 with house music and I know that I was one of the first DJs who played that sound. In the beginning people told me: ‘you are stupid to play that music because it will not stay for long’ and look, I’m still here! lol!
The music that you produce is of inimitable quality. Can you tell us more about your studio set up?
The only things I can say about it is that we work at home with a Mac or PC, it’s digital, and we use the programs Logic, Ableton live and Cubase.
What equipment do you use to produce your DJ sets with? Do you see yourself more as a live musician, or is it being in the studio that really gets you going?
I still love to play with turntables and also CDR. In the first place I’m a DJ and in the second place producing at the studio of course…
As well as fantastic tracks, you also have some rather amusing videos. Are you the creator of these? Where do the stories come from?
No I didn’t make the videos, hehe lol. It’s the people from Bonzai who let them make the videos. Sorry but the stories are a secret.
So what’s next for Yves?
Next? I hope to stay with music as long as possible because it’s my life. I don’t know what to do without music… Hehe… I’m still in love with it after so many years.
Thank you for your time, I am very much looking forward to playing alongside you and meeting you in person at the festival.
You’re welcome!
