Billy Daniel Bunter gets Tasty with Nicky D

Reported by Billy Daniel Bunter / Submitted 15-10-07 21:56

After much badgering from Tasty regulars to get her on, Nicky D came and smashed one Tasty at The Renaissance rooms. Since then we’ve continued to support her but it wasn’t until she came on at the last minute to play 5 to 6 at The Mass Reunion with her banging, but uplifting hard dance and extremely tight mixing skills that we knew she would become a regular fixture on Tasty line up’s, as not only did she rock, the buzz the following week for her set was superb.

For the Tasty 6th Birthday, Nicky will be stepping up prime time "main room" once again, to show Tasty & London what hard house is all about. I caught up with her to find out more about her love for hard & fast music, and what her plans are for the future!

"Main Room." "Peak Time." "Tasty 6th Birthday." What have you got in store for us?

I'm looking forward to this set so much. Expect a fun, bouncy & energetic set from me. Bold mixing, big bass swaps and who knows what else. I won’t give too much away.

What, where & who inspired you to master the art of DJing?

Truthfully? My husband and his mates! When I went clubbing I never thought I wanted to become a DJ as I thought it was something I could never get into. I had no intention to play on the decks when they were bought in 2004 but after a few months I got shown the basics and became hooked. It opened up a whole new world for me. I gave out my demos and got some bookings and it all went from there really thanks to the promotions who gave me a chance when I was starting out: Baklash, hUJe, Union and Affinity.

For those yet to experience a Nicky D set, how would you describe your style?

I actually have two styles and there is no in-between. Fun, energetic, uplifting and bouncy or hard nrg/filth. I'm torn between the two styles. I love the buzz from playing bouncy and uplifting tunes and I enjoy playing around with the mix. With filth it's completely different for me, I enjoy the sound of the mix and the relentlessness. Nice and evil! My husband is really into hard nrg and I think this has a big part in why I love it so much as I never used to.

Is music a hobby for you, or something you would like to pursue further as a career?
I don't believe there is enough money in the DJing industry to make a career out of it, but who wouldn't like to give up work to DJ in front of hundreds or thousands of people and play the music that you’re passionate about. So come on then who’s offering the job then? I will hand my notice in tomorrow.

Is it all banging hard house, or do you have other musical interests?

It's got to be banging hard dance all the way. There's the odd tune in the chart that I like but it's a rarity. I always put the radio on at 4:30am on my way to work and find myself switching the CD player on to listen to hard house instead. I love that fact that at work people ask me what music I’m into and when I tell them hard house they ask, " What’s that?" To try and explain it to them is a joke. That music that just goes bang, bang!

So many people are saying the club scene is dying, what are your views on this?

I believe the club scene isn't dying, it's changing and so are we. We all love the old clubbing. There are so many sub genres of hard dance that clubbers are spoilt for choice. It used to be that a big group of us would go to a big event together but now we are all going to nights with our preferred style. There are still nights out there still pulling in the crowds like Tasty, Capital Carnage, Frantic, Twist, Party Proactive and I heard that Raindance’s last event was packed. For me I still really enjoy events but I’m experiencing enjoyment more from the DJing side. It’s like when I first went clubbing with butterflies and excitement.

What are your fondest memories of Tasty?

Oh there are so many. Tasty holds most of my early memories when I wasn't into the DJing side of things. I'm not too sure on the dates but there was a Christmas ball a few years back when I first went to Tasty. The decor, uv stalls, DJs, music and atmosphere at that event kept me going back. About 20 of us used to get the train up and it was always such a laugh. I wasn't into DJs then so I could never remember who played. It's only the last 3 years that I have started to take notice.

I do remember once watching Mark EG play for the first time and I couldn't believe it. He was mimicking 15 cans of stella, he seemed to know every part of the tune, he was zipping his top up and down to the hoover noise in the tune. He was so good to watch, in fact he was a nutter. K90 also played a set in the main room at The Mass but the set up was on the dance floor which made it so much more intimate. His set blew me away.

I remember hoping to be on the Tasty flyer as a clubber and there I was, a small picture of me dancing with a few others. It may have been small but it made my day. Who would have thought 2-3 years later it would be my name on the Tasty flyer. That’s so hard to believe. I think it's great that Tasty give up and coming DJs a chance to shine with their full support.

I will never forget the time I was told the afterparty I was to be playing at was cancelled. I was disappointed as I had a fair few people coming up to support me. Then about an hour later I was told I would play in the main room in the next 20 minutes. I had no time to get nervous (Oh ok maybe a little!). I will always remember that set, it was so much fun to play to the lively Tasty crowd. To be given that chance was brilliant, it made me smile for weeks.

Have you plans to go in the studio and make your own material?

I have just purchased Ableton live but I'm scratching the surface really. Rather than read the manual and be baffled with it all I decided to get stuck in. I managed to make a tune from start to finish but I feel there is something missing. I don’t think that I don't have enough production knowledge to do much about it, so I'm not in any rush but defiantly look out for some material from me in the future.

What producers & DJ’s do you check for inspiration?

There are a lot of producers I love but mainly K90 and Paul Glazby.
I’ve enjoyed recent sets from Andy Farley and Lisa Pin Up. Both their sets at Creamfields were brilliant. The mixes and tune selections were spot on.

Where do you get your music from, and do you play from CD or Vinyl?

I tend to use CDs lately as there is so much to choose from and so much you can do with a CD deck. I use Trackitdown, tidy Digital and 3 Beat Digital. Depends what I’m after really. It's so easy with downloads; it's a shame really for the future of vinyl.

Where do you see the hard house scene going?

I see the scene improving. Mainly with new, better venues being used like Scala, The Rocket Complex and The Arches and new DJs being used to keep it fresh,

Where can we expect to see you play over the coming months?

Paradoxx afterparty at The 414 on the 10th Nov. This is a great little afterparty run by Darren B, it’s always busy and has a great atmosphere. It's always a pleasure to play for them.

Paradoxx 3rd birthday at The 414 on the 30th Nov. This will be my first night time event playing for them so I’m excited about this one. To top it off Andy Farley will be playing for the first time at the 414 so it will make it that extra special. I think this will be rammed.

Frantic NYE at a secret warehouse space. What can I say, how exciting, I believe I’m back to back with Caz Wood which is ideal for me as we both have similar styles. This night will be amazing.

What’s your current top 5?

Bit of a mixture really:

1 - Marcel Woods - Advanced
2 - Andy Farley - Give me a reason
3 - Tom Parr - Politics & Music
4 - Wake up - Valex & Narc
4 - Defective Audio - Control n Fx

And your all time top 5?

1 - Signum - What u got 4 me?
2 - Carlos & Manez - F**k you !
3 - Paul Glazby - Hostile
4 - Mark Gray - 99.9
5 - Patrick Bunton - Listen

What does the future hold for Nicky D as a DJ?

I'm hoping lots more sets to gain lots more experience. I will look more into production and hopefully see where I go with that, apart from that who knows?
