DJ-XLAB4 gets BIG this Halloween!

Reported by Dan@BIG!HQ / Submitted 22-10-07 22:42

They don’t come much bigger than this in hard dance this Halloween. One half of rip roaring hard dance supergroup Lab4, teaming up with venue destroying promotion BIG to leave you quaking in your boots (if you miss it of course!). Think great new music, think atmosphere second to none, oh yes this is a treat not to be missed but what does Les Elston, now re-launched as DJ-X LAB4, have to say about it?

November 3rd will see DJ-X playing his first gig since he parted ways from Adam Newman at the BIG Halloween Ball at the Junction, Cambridge, a world exclusive no less! So what’s he been up to? Where has he been? Where will he be boshing it out come the witching hour?

Don’t lose your heads just yet though fright fans, as maybe you should know a bit about BIG and our Halloween events. It all started 6 years ago with our Award Winning Halloween Ball at Newmarket’s Club M back in 2001, followed by our massive debut event at Kartouche in Ipswich, one year later. Selling-out both of East Anglia’s major dance clubs, we set our sights on Norfolk’s clubbing capital Norwich, with that now infamous monster event!

With Suffolk’s sanctuaries slammed and Norfolk’s coffin nailed, we now have to let the best lay to rest as there’s a new mansion to haunt in Cambridgeshire. Behold the Cambridge debut of: The BIG Halloween Ball 2007 and the Resurrection!

In association with M8 magazine, East Anglia’s biggest night is going to be crazier than ever as we celebrate our annual fright night of spooky festivities and transform the awesome Junction music arena into an amazing, special one-off clubbers paradise; featuring state of the art digital sound and lighting with special effects, stilt walkers, flame machines, giant 8ft pumpkins, massive video screens, breathtaking visuals, the craziest most mind blowing live stage performances and the regions biggest, most powerful sound system!

And it doesn’t stop there, this tricks a real treat as we present two dungeons of the best hard dance music featuring some of the Worlds best superstar DJs and the regions leading talent that will set the dance floor well and truly alight. “But what about Lez?” we hear you scream into the night.

BIG decided to book DJ-X after BIG Ben worked with him on a track called Megatron, where we discovered no limits to his enthusiasm and dedication for the hard house scene. Of course we already knew about his image and outgoing personality behind the decks making for a great crowd experience and it all adds up to just the right combination to send a shiver down your spine. Still let’s hope he gets into the spirit and comes in Halloween fancy dress!

A classically trained guitarist Lez's career has focused around alternative electronic music and production, in particular as one half of legendary and award winning Lab4. Even before that though, back in 1987, he formed his first band Atomic and showcased for all the major record labels, CBS, Island, EMI etc before receiving a development deal from Polydor. In 1989 Lez left Atomic to play in various rock, goth and alternative bands. In 1990 he formed MAD with Richard Curtis (vocals) and Adam Newman (drums) and they played various gigs in London and Oxford. Now in another change in direction he’s branching out on his own.

“Since the breakup of Lab4 at the end of 2006 I've been working on 2 albums and other various projects,” he tells us. “The first is a follow up album to Lab4's None Of Us Are Saints which was released in early 2006. The reason I decided to go ahead with it was the sheer amount of requests I was receiving through my website and mySpace page for a follow up album to 'Saints', so I decided to go for it.” He’s already chosen the name for the release, Reload. Sitting in the harder end of Lab4’s sound, fans have, by now, had a chance to sample V for Vengeance and Falling Down via his mySpace page.

“I'm also in the process of setting up a digital record label along with DJ BIG Ben,” he continues. “It’s going to be called digital BIG (dB). Initially it will feature just our own material but later we will be on the lookout for new talent to add to the three style categories: hard dance, trance and electro.” There’s also his other project to keep your eyes out for, in the form of Overlords of the Underground.

“This is a project first conceived out of the Lab4 Live Xtreme shows and features Si Portway from Cambridge based band High White Honkeys on vocals and me. This was something born out of a trial by fire type situation really. When we did the Tidy Trax 10th birthday bash at Magna a couple of years ago they wanted us to do a slightly different Lab4 show so we decided to incorporate a vocalist for just one track and the end of the set. After an initial meeting (read piss up!) with Si we knew it would work. We did the show and it was a success. After that we were invited out to Japan to do the Live Xtreme show for our Tokyo based major label Avex. After that show they said they wanted us to work on an album and develop the project, so that's what we're up to now."

"We'll be featuring a promo video for World On Fire on the Overlords mySpace page. It was filmed by Piers Royce who is currently doing a degree in film making and studying with Ken Russell.” Impressive credentials and a clear development path frame this redeveloped sound nicely leading Lez and hard dance music lovers into 2008 and the release of a DJ-X album while, in parallel, you’ll see the Overlords project step out of the shadows into the limelight. “It will also see me hitting the decks and getting back into the clubs again after a year off writing and producing.” But don’t worry if you’re an international reader as there are also tours in Japan and Australia in the offing while soon after Finland and Holland get a chance to experience afresh Lez’s sound.

“But in the meantime I’m off to the BIG Halloween Ball with M8 Magazine and my good friends Lisa Pin Up, Kutski, Andy Farley, BIG Ben and Paul Wilkerson. I’m very much looking forward to it as, trust me, BIG parties are always mad!”

So join everyone from 7pm at Nusha Bar right opposite the Junction, where we’ll be kicking off with the official BIG Halloween Ball pre-party and DJ competition final. Then to the Junction for the biggest Halloween show Cambridge has ever seen! You’d be batty (harhar) to miss it!
