Guiliano Zago presents the Julian Gas & Friends techno room @Psychedelic Academy

Reported by Tara / Submitted 30-04-08 15:55

It wasn't until Julian Gas came to London in 1998 that he discovered techno for the first time and his journey has taken him to some of the best parties in the capital. Along with a few good mates, he's taking over the foyer of Brixton Academy this Bank Holiday Sunday 4 May. As the countdown to this carnage begins, we had a gas with the man also known as Guiliano Zago about the crucial differences between London techno, acid techno and funky techno and what the best type of pasta really is...

After being addicted to London’s vibrant acid techno squat party scene for many years, Guiliano started his own night Acid Park with friends DJ Animatek and Barella and hasn’t looked back. Eventually becoming a resident of Teknoworld and Family Groove, Gas has spent the last eight years mastering the art of DJing. In the process he’s played alongside the best in the industry, including London boys Chris and Aaron Liberator, D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Laurie Immersion, James ‘Sterling’ Moss and James Kinetic, as well as international names like Mauro Picotto, Marco Bailey, Chris Liebing and Valentino Kanzyani.

Once his mentor and mate Chris Liberator showed him how to make music, Gas made the decision to move from spending his spare time at squat parties to working hard in the studio, and has started releasing his own tracks. ‘DJ Don't Cut Put The Volume Up’ with Pablo Gargano received great feedback from some of techno's top names, while the A Side, ‘1000 Miles’ has the stamp of approval from Guy McGaffer and of course Chris Liberator himself. 2008 is shaping up to be his busiest year yet, as the following interview illustrates...

Guiliano you’re putting on the Gas and Friends techno room aka the foyer at Psychedelic Academy @ Brixton Academy. How did this come about? And why are you putting on a techno room at a psy event?

The Julian Gas techno room has always been part of Antiworld. I think it’s a good idea because it gives people the opportunity to choose different styles of music when they go to AW events. We also have an electro and minimal techno room, so people can find every style of music they want. I’m hosting the techno room because I’m a techno DJ and producer, that’s why — as it’s my favourite style of music.

Traditionally techno events and psy events are very differerent, attracting completely different crowds. How are you going to make having such diverse ravers at Psy Academy get on and have a good time?

I think these days techno culture is not that far from the psy crowd, you can find a psychedelic room at practically every techno event and the other way round. We always have fun at our events because we have a friendly family and crew who share a passion for good music.

How did you put the line-up together? What can we expect over the course of the evening?

I always try to have different DJs playing in my room, but they all of course play techno. The warm up DJ usually starts playing slightly European techno (which is not that hard) and it builds up to banging techno. You can see the dance floor growing and people start dancing as the DJs progress.

You're originally from Italy. Please tell us a bit about where you're from and how you ended up in London.

That’s right, I’m from Italy, Verona. I came to London in 1998 looking for the excitement of London night life and started working in a restaurant. But once in 1999 I went to my friend’s house party and realised that I have an amazing passion for music. That’s where my DJing career started. Since then I’ve tried my best to put a smile on people’s faces during my sets! So that’s how it all started and it’s gonna continue….

When did you first get into mixing records? Are you self-taught or did you study music?

As I mentioned before, it all started back in 1999. I was very passionate about mixing so I starting mixing in my bedroom, practicing for hours before I went and played out that first time. So you can say that I’ve taught myself.

Who or what were your key musical influences growing up? And now?

Well when I was little I didn’t have any techno influences; music was very different at that time. But now I definitely have my favourite artists: Carl Cox, Chris Liberator (we are playing back to back at the party) and Chris Liebing — they were my inspiration to start music production.

Were you a raver or a clubber? Can you remember a particular track or event that converted you to techno music?

Sure I was into raving, I was burning out my dancing shoes every weekend in different parties including squat parties. I used to have so many favourite tracks it’s gonna take me 10 years to mention them all — let’s just say I love techno!!

You've been an Antiworld resident for many years now. How did you first get involved with Enrico and start playing for AW events?

I met Enrico back in 1999 and start doing flyering for him. We became good friends and because I was very hardworking he saw a potential in me and offered for me to play at Antiworld events... so I did and continue to do so now.

You've started getting further into production, having already worked in the studio with Chris Liberator and James ‘Sterling’ Moss, who’re also on the line-up for Psy Academy. What inspired you to start producing your own tracks?

I did work in the studio with Chris Liberator. We are good friends now and it’s all going very well. I think every DJ should start from mixing and then should start production, so he or she can show the world their own inspiration and love for music. Also you will get a chance to hear DJ VINZ, Ross Eden and Roo, Sterling Moss and many more….

Could you please tell us a bit about your productions so far. What gear did you use in the studio? Did it take you long to learn how to put a track together?

I used to spend long hours in the studio, but now I’ve learned how to use most of the equipment and software, so any free minute I get I’m going to the studio and working on my music. I’ve done finished a couple of tracks now: one of them is ‘DJ Don’t Cut Put the Volume Up’ on Maximum Minimal, one of the Stay Up Forever (SUF) labels.

What have been the highlights of your career so far? And what goals do you have for the future?

I’m doing lots of production and I’m a resident at AW events and I’m very happy about this. I also gonna play in Vienna in the next few months and Hungary in September and I’m hoping to play in Ibiza as well.

Did you make any new year's resolutions for 2008? And have you kept to them?

Let’s say I’m pretty happy with my life and I do follow my resolutions. Let’s hope I’m gonna get more gigs as planned, so I’ll see you soon on the dance floor.

What DJs and producers would you like to see break through in 2008?

I would like to see myself playing at the best events of the year (smile).

Playing back to back with Eduardo Herrera @ The Antiworld Indoor Festival @SeOne

What's your favourite never-fail recipe in the kitchen?

Pasta of course — I’m Italian! The best kind is home made tortellini with butter and parmesan cheese.

Which song would you like played at your funeral?

That’s a very wrong question — I am a young man and I’m not thinking about my funeral.

You've been DJing at clubs and free parties around London and Europe for a while now. What advice would you give to bedroom DJs reading this?

Do more promotion. It’s very important to be hard-working and know what you really want. If you want to achieve something you should do everything for this no matter what people say they think you should do. Young DJs should first of all find a good promoter or manager so they can build up their careers.

There's been a lot of controversy on this website about funky techno. Do you think it exists and if so, what is it?

I do believe that funky techno exists. It is techno with funky loops, usually around 135 bpm. A lot of famous DJs like Chris Liebing and DJ Murphy play it and it’s very popular with the crowd because it’s a bit commercial but still has the groove!

It says on the Psychedelic Academy flyer that your room contains London techno and acid techno. What's the difference between these sub-genres?

It’s pretty much the same thing, acid techno and London techno. I suppose the London crowd just invented London techno because they want to point out that it was born in London. Say for example there can be Italian techno and acid techno will still be the same.

How would you describe the particular brand of techno that you play?

I would say I play funky techno, it’s very lively and pretty amazing. It makes people move their butts on the dancefloor! You don’t believe me?! Come and check it out this Sunday 4 May!

When did you first meet Chris Liberator and what made you start collaborating together?

I met Chris at a squat party about nine years ago. He is the techno god who was my inspiration and my passion and I’m very happy to play back to back with him at the party!!Chris is a very good friend of mine. We first started working together on production and that leads us into next Sunday’s B2B set!

Is this your first back to back? How are you going to decide who plays what? What can readers expect from this debut?

It’s the first time I’ve played back to back with Chris and it’s an honour for me to play with him. I know his Technics and I know what to expect, so hopefully it’s all go smoothly. We’re just gonna follow the vibe of the night and play the music that’ll put a smile on people’s faces. It’ll be an amazing set because these are two people who share the same passion for techno music.

We’re gonna try our very best and rock the house! See you on the dancefloor of the techno room at Brixton Academy on Bank Holiday Sunday 4 May!
