Warning! This Is Brow

Reported by Jazzy / Submitted 09-09-08 20:41

Over more or less the last year, there has been an unmistakable and unique new sound hitting dance floors up and down the country. This sound has fresh rumbling basslines, uplifting dirty riffs, brain bending synths and catchy vocals. These are the sounds of the friendly duo Batten and Brow, together they have been creating some monster tracks commanding respect from some of the scene's biggest players.

These two have been smashing it up and have a series of dates in the diary for the rest of the year, but for now I decided to catch up with the heel-flicking funkster that is Brow ahead of his upcoming set at Warning.

Hi Brow, everything alright?

Yep!

We've been hearing some pretty good things coming from the Brow & Batten studio lately. Give us an update on what you've been up to since we last spoke.

Well we've certainly been pretty busy the last six months or so, trying to get as much material done as our jobs can allow. I think the stuff we've been doing has been getting better and better. Ghetto Funk - a real funky, rolling yet still tough number, Maniac - an evil track we made with Paul's brother Neil whilst he was back from Oz, and Gut Rot - dark, very underground and pretty experimental techno edged track. I think I'll be playing Gut Rot for a long, long time as it’s easily my favourite tune we've done to date.

In May this year you made your début at Twist playing back to back with Paul, tell us how this came about and how the set went.

It was kinda sprung upon me a little bit, as they only asked me the weekend before, but no way was I going to say no. I was pretty nervous to be honest beforehand, it's been a long time ambition of mine to play to the Twist crowd, but it couldn't really have gone much better. The place was absolutely rocking from start to finish and I think I was still smiling two weeks later!

Since then you've made your main room début warming Twist up for SNAT, what made your set stand out?

Warming up is the hardest set to play in my opinion. You start off with no one in the room and as people filter in you've got to get them on the dance floor and get the party off to a good start. I suppose you could describe what I played as bass driven techno with elements of hard house, catchy vocals and funky stabs.

I hear you've been booked to play Twist's 6th birthday, talk us through what you've got in store for the birthday bonanza.

You can't open your presents early, haha! I'll have a few surprises for you.

You and Paul have recently had one of your tracks Cakemix released on the mighty Karim's label DoNotBend. How did this happen and how do you feel about it?

Karim is a total inspiration to me, ever since I first heard him play for Epsilon at Crash (many years ago now). His music in my opinion has taken the hard house scene forward and out of the doldrums in recent years and without hearing his music I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now. To have a release on DoNotBend is a massive honour for both of us and I'm chuffed to bits!

Anything special looming around the corner that you can let us in on?

We've got a couple more bits to do and then we're going to do a full production mix. It's something we've both wanted to do for a long time now but have held off to accumulate a few more tracks to throw into the mix. We've also got some studio time with James Nardi coming up that we're very excited about!

The upcoming Warning is being held at the Royal Hotel in Southend, any thoughts or insights on the venue and the crowd?

I've frequented the Royal Hotel several times over the last year or so as a clubber for Concept and a couple of other dos, and I have to say I've not had a single bad experience. It's a wicked venue - a beefy sound system, good lighting and an exceptional, up for it (and slightly mad) crowd. I'm really looking forward to playing there and taking the whole Warning experience to the seaside!

Got anything special planned for the fancy dress 'S' theme?

Ah ha! Well you'll just have to wait and see won't you!

The music you and Batten produce has been labelled 'fresh', 'innovative' and 'unique'. Care to share where you guys get your ideas and inspirations?

That'd be telling! We get ideas and inspiration from anything and everything. I guess you could say that our brains are always ticking over in that respect. We try to be creative and different from the norm, trying to get sounds to bounce off each other to keep things flowing and above all energetic.

Speaking of inspirations, are you and Paul planning to produce something in the funky techno genre you both love?

Without a doubt! For me everything boils back down to techno and it's the building block for everything we do. We've got so many ideas of things we want to do it make have to wait a little while, but we will definitely be putting together some slower paced 'purer' techno tracks when we get the chance. Watch this space!

Are there any DJs or other that are really pushing the right buttons for you?

Kauz has been making some quality recently as has James Nardi, Dave Curtis and PAS. Tim Shaw (DnG) though is really a cut above for me at the moment in terms of producing boundary breaking, original music.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Easy – strawberries, haha!

In TV adverts, there are quirky characters like 'Tony the Tiger' and 'Captain Birdseye', if you could be one for the day, who would you be?

Hmmm good question, I suppose its got to be Honey Monster or the Hoffmeister bear!

Who's your favourite Spice Girl?

Er... none of them really do it for me.

Berbatov or Robbie Keane?

They're both as bad as other!

Last but not least, have you found your car keys?

Ahem.... yes thank you very much!

More: WARNING! Goes Coast Side people for its 2nd birthday and celebrating Darren’s birthday aka Getonit! After the closure of the Annexe, we thought we should venture out of London and head to Southend on Sea premium dance venue and put on a party in the Royal Hotel.

The venue

The Royal Hotel is a large 3 storey club with unique décor, traditional fittings, draped curtains and a banging sound system that scares the seagulls away. The club has friendly security to make sure the club night operates smoothly.

Check out the photos on HF or DSI from nights held by Concept to see the venue. The club is licensed to 4am and alcohol is cheap and sold until this time. We have hired out the ballroom this will be the main room. For the first time we have a second room, this is the bar, where the finest electro, breaks and Drum n Bass will be belted out.

The club has an amazing lighting rig to complement the immense sound system and there will be lasers, smoke machine and inflatable’s added to the club. Smoking area is provided at the entrance.

The people who make it happen- The DJ’s- Main room

Paul Batten- Let me introduce “The Battenator” or his normal name “Paul Batten.” Many of you will know him from being a resident at Twist, playing at INSEKT and at Tidy, Twist vs. Vicious Circle or simply are his mate and know what a legend he is.

He has been rocking now for many years as a DJ and specialises in many genres of dance music- Hard House, Techno, Funky Techno, but not POP and not WHAM! that will be me! From Batten and Brow’s early productions of their floor breaker Sloppy Jalopy and Stay on the Scene there have been many more countless tunes, Slapstick a Brow, Nowak and Batten speciality, Deep Swarm boot leg, the hard hitting Cake Mix and the ridiculously sick Gut Rot.

Next on the WARNING line- up is our second resident, the party animal “Richard” or better known as “Brow.” He has a wealth of music knowledge and technical ability and his sets are always going to be unique. So on the night we will be handing out some more of his techno demo’s to send you to another world. Brow is going to be in the main room kicking ass with some fine funky to harder techno.

Guest DJ’s

Someone we thought could shake the chandeliers from the Royal Hotel, ruffle a few feathers and hit South end with a bang and make the joint birthday’s something special is the legendary French Man- Karim Lamouri. Yes this flamboyant, talented DJ is back at WARNING to play a special set with a few Karim classics thrown in for good measure.

Karim is the owner of his own record label Do Not Bend Records with classic releases such as ‘Experts on Pot’ and ‘Rocking Ronnie’ and one of his most amazing tunes to date and certainly of 2007 ‘I feel love.’ What a tune. Also out is Karim’s new album Unreleased Projects 2. Check out www.dj-karim.com for more information

Always at Warning we like to have a northern DJ down, last time being Andy Rise and Matt Pickup. This time we have chosen Rick (Kauz) and produce’s HardHouse, on the DJ front he has played at events such as Tidy vs Extreme Euphoria @ Heaven , London, Terminals @ The Renaissance Rooms , London, as well as regular slots at Xstatic , CyberKitten and Magnetic, and on the production side he has had the chance to work with some fantastic producers like Defective Audio, Frank Farrell, Dave Owens , Riggsy ,Digital Kid, DnG and Hilze and have had many of his tracks signed to labels such as Toolbox Records , Toolbox Hammerheads , FlashPoint, Delete The Weak, Hazardous Records, Xstension Records. We are looking forward to him do his shit on the night!

Our next honcho to grace the decks or should I say more appropriately these days in these ever changing times the CDJ’s, we have the awesome fella Tom Basquil. He has played for us before and closed nicely and as he has been enjoying playing b2b with Mr Batten we have put them together again to close for an hour and half finest NRG. Certainly lock up your daughters, get out of the smoking area and get your ass moving for the finest closing set.

Tom has made tunes such as the quality ‘Penny drop’, ‘distorted reality’, ‘hostile bitch’ and ‘rock dat shit’ with Steve Maynard and WMD.

To warm up for us for the first time and play some of his finest trance will be Glyn Waters. Many of you will know him from Twist. Over the past year he has been leaving the bedroom to play out and he his making head way. So get your glow sticks out and get waving.

And finally we have two wicked Southend DJ’s who love DJ’ing, clubbing, play quality Hard House and have played for Concept and Sectioned at The Royal Hotel before. Look out for this duo as they compliment this amazing line- up.

Graduation room

We wanted to give you a second room to enhance the already growing WARNING and play some alternative music and give some hidden stars the chance to play out. If you’re wondering why it is called the graduation room, three of the DJ’s graduated this summer! Well done, tap on the back! Oh and its not John Edwards or Pete Enza.

The graduation room is going to be warmed up by Warning resident “The Cowboy” real name “John Edwards” funking it up for us to start. He has been getting involved with DJ’ing for many years and has played in the arcade for Twist.

A last minute booking is the hugely talented and real nice guy from up north- Pete Enza who will be supplying some wicked beats and progression. Best mate of DNG, Pete will be rocking the bar.

One of the graduates from this summer to play out for WARNING is DJ Prime Example. His real name is Chris Woollett by the way. Chris is the type of person who when he wants to do something, he does it to perfection and this shows with his DJ’ing, ability to scratch and has toured Eastern Europe banging out his breaks and DnB. This set is going to be electric- I know I have seen him play.

And finally we have a b2b to finish the night off; with something we had in the main room a while ago- Drum b Bass in your face! With DJ Demo playing back to back OB, finest liquid and full on DnB to close the room! If DnB is your thing then this set will be what you need to brock out 2 and get grimy!

Now with the DJ’s sorted and the venue organised, the only thing left is you, the clubbers. Warning will be rocking Southend on Sea in style with our unique tuneage selection and we will be decorating it with Warning’s unique décor, install a laser, smoke machine, inflatable’s, resident mix CD’s and even party bags. We are anticipating a hell of a night a great friendly atmosphere and banging music from start to finish through the both room’s amazing sound system.
