Sizziling Illogik Style!

Reported by Sam Townend / Submitted 19-11-08 20:50

With skills most DJs can only dream of, Ilogik is about to take things to the next level. Already embracing DVJ technology as well as three deck plus fx mixing, sets from him are something to behold!

Where did the name Ilogik come from?

From a faraway land! Joking aside my original DJ name when I was 16 was DJ Ilogik, I got this as I mix my records the logical way, the best possible way you can blend two, three or four tracks together. When I got into the rave/hardcore scene it changed to E-logic, then when I made the transition to hard house I changed it to Ilogik. I’ve always kept the same name really but changed it to fit the genre. I don’t know what I’m gonna call my self next time round, probably Ilostit!

How did you get in to hard house?

I got into hard house via a crazy little club called Sundissential many years ago. We went along and once I was in there I was taken by the music, it was similar to hardcore in that it had the same energy and drive but it seemed more of a credible sound at the time, so I went to more and more Sundissentials and got the bug. I decided to have a go at making some hard house and being from a hardcore background I could approach it with a different edge. My first tune was Make It Happen which I actually still play sometimes. I don’t think it sounds dated so I’m really happy with that!

What defines an Ilogik “shrink wrapped” remix?

Ilogik "shrink wrapped" is a guise for me to take when I’m producing harder tracks. I love good hard music and felt that the scene lacks well produced hard music. It has just been flooded with lots of average tracks, so I took that on board and decided to give my self a harder guise. I also needed to differentiate between production styles in some way. I’m very busy with this at the moment, it seems to have taken over! Still, I’m loving it so watch this space for lots of shrink wrapped remixes and productions.

The first shrink wrapped remix I did was for Flashpoint Records and its a Rodi Styles track called Burn It, it will be out soon . Since then I’ve remixed Immure by Equinox which will be out soon too. I have two other shrink wrapped remixes on the go , one is of Ben Stevens’s Warning and the other is a Dave Holmes track called Equal In Love so watch out for them.

You contributed the track I Feel You for the Tidy Inspirations album, can you tell me more about the track and why you chose that one?

Since the early days of my clubbing life, I have always loved the original track by Love Decade. The track has got emotion, good vocals and anthemic strings, what more could you want? Rather than do a full on cover version, I added my own edge to it by putting a hard trance riff over it, bringing it right up to date.

You launched your own Elasticman Records label in 2000, how did that opportunity arise? Did you just wake up one morning and decide to run a hard house label?

Well this is a funny one as it involves Tidy Trax. I made my first three or four tracks and sent the tracks to Tidy with a view to them signing the tracks. I got a call from Andy Pickles expressing interest in Make It Happen – they’d played it out and loved it! I had a meeting with them about it but nothing really came of it so I decided to release it my self and start a label which is how Elasticman started really. From that day on I have never stopped with it.

We love having you play at the Tidy Weekenders, what has been your favourite weekender so far and why?

I could not tell you which has been my favourite to be honest. I can’t even remember TW15, haha! They are all good, even the sh!t ones are brilliant if that makes sense. The weekenders are part of the clubbing calendar and are a pleasure to play for.

Your Tidy Weekender 15 set has been recorded and will be released as part of the triple weekender CD album on November 3rd, for the benefit of those that didn’t see you play can you tell us a bit more about the mix and what we can expect from it?

The mix was very hard for me to compile. I put great thought into the track listing and made sure that the tracks went with each other well enough for the music to flow. I tried to put a mixture of artists on there as well as showcasing some of my new productions. I played a lot of attention to mixing and tricks and at its most complex I had three tracks playing while doing something with the Pioneer EFX. I think I just wanted to do a mix in which the listener wouldn’t actually know what I was doing in the mix, I hope I achieved that.

I’m picking out a few of the mixes that I did on the CD and doing a video type tutorial on them, explaining what I did with the track, how I did the mix and why I did certain things the way I did so people can see the things I do behind the decks. I’m sure a lot of the time people don’t even know I’m doing the stuff I’m doing.

We hear you had a bit of an experience with a naked DJ in an apron at the Weekender, care to shed some light on this?

Naked DJ? Nah, he’s not a DJ, he thinks he is, haha! Taz, one half of Damage and Narcotique. He decided to strip off down to an apron at the weekender. It was funny for a second, then it went crazy and ended up that they were whipping each other until blood was drawn, haha. And it didn’t stop there. At the end of it Taz ended up branded with a red hot spoon which had been left to heat up red hot on the cooker. I think it was that Willy Donka track Put A Wonk In It that sent him over the edge.

Oh the things that happen at a Tidy Weekender! "The things they do to stop my hands clapping, I make it happen , I start rapping"...........oppps,, got Make It Happen on the brain!

What’s next for Ilogik?

I’m so busy with production at the moment its just stupid, There will be a lot of Ilogik "shrink wrapped" stuff coming out that’s for sure. I’m still going strong with Elasticman and Elasticman Platinum and have around 12 releases done and ready to go out. I’ve also been making tech trance with Paul Janes, none are finished yet but they are sounding very good. On top of this I have a few trance tracks that sound brilliant but need finishing and a few commercial projects. I’ve been very busy!

There will be a limited edition Elasticman Album coming at some point, I’m just working on the concept for it. It will probably be a mix disc with all the old stuff on there. Following it in a similar vein will be an Elasticman Platinum mix album.
I have a mix portal site that is set to go live which I’m using to bring all my sites; bebo, FaceBook and MySpaces together and also as a place to download a few of my mixes. I don’t like to do mixes unless its a album releases as I feel that DJs uploading mixes with other peoples music on for free is a contributing factor to why album sales are falling but I have some older mixes and will do the odd new mix for people as I know there is maybe a lack of ilogik mixes out there.

The mix portal site is www.ilogikinthemix.com and will be live soon.

What is the strangest request you’ve ever received as a DJ?

I’ve had that many I can’t remember, apart from the usual "Have you got any R’n’B?” "Have you got any Tiesto?” "Have you got any hardstyle?” “Can you say happy birthday to my girlfriend over the mic?” I wasn’t even DJing, I didn’t realise I look like an MC! Maybe there’s a market for a one man DJ?MC. Maybe juggle and do magic tricks too. I really would be the saviour of hard house, haha!
