Anne Savage Starts A Riot!

From her origins playing lead guitar in a punk band, to playing huge illegal raves at the height of the free party movement in the early '90s, to being the first female UK DJ to play in Canada, to spearheading the rise of the hard dance scene – Anne Savage has never been one to stand still, keeping moving with the times and constantly pushing herself to evolve and grow as a DJ and producer. 15 years on from her first big break and she's looking and sounding more exciting and vital than ever before, with a more accomplished and diverse CV than most DJs could dream of.
You are playing at Riot for their 8th birthday at Ministry Of Sound on Easter Sunday, what’s in store for Riot fans?
Well Riot is a fine balance of discerning music lovers and, well, basically party animals, so I will be catering for both in my set. Most DJs will tell you that when they play at Riot it brings out the best in them, we always put that extra effort in so I'll be working on a set between now and then, picking out my anthems and making everything else fit round those. It's a superb lineup so that will keep me on my toes, but I figure if I pick tunes that I'd like to dance to, then so should everyone else.
When you aren’t DJing, who’s set are you most looking forward to hearing on the night?
I'd like to see The Sharp Boys. I've been a big fan of theirs for years; it has always been about the percussion in their tracks, really crisp driving phat drums - superb. I'm also looking forward to seeing Leeroy Thornhill's set, we DJed together for Lisa Lashes at her night in Ibiza a few years ago and that was the last time I saw him play. He was wicked then and a really, really funny guy, we had a blast that summer and I know he'll definitely bring that party vibe to the event. Scot Project is one in a million isn't he though? He has a unique sound and always does these insane edits of anything from U2 to Killers. I'm a huge, huge fan of his original stuff on Druck as well, so I'll be hanging around after his set to see what I can scrounge in the way of new tunes...Obviously, however BK & Ed Real will be the carrot on the stick that gets me on the dancefloor if any of the above fails!
In January Riot returned at The End’s request for one final Sunday session, what do you think it is about Riot’s events that set them apart from the rest?
It’s the magic combination of a bunch of like-minded people who really know their tunes and love to party. The organizers are a real nice, happy set of people who are doing it for the right reasons, for instance, you can never really tell who's actually running the event on the night, it just seems to happen. Obviously a huge amount of work goes into putting on a Riot, but on the night they all seem stress free and enjoy it as much as the clubbers so everyone feels on the same level and it makes for a wicked atmosphere. It's really special and unless you've been you probably won't know what I'm on about. I used to go all the time when I lived in London for a wind down after a hard weekend's gigging, even if I wasn't DJing there and always had a wicked night.
What track for you is guaranteed to get a Riot party started?
Anything with a Prodigy sample in, I’ll probably leave it to Leeroy this time though!
Riot aside, what other gigs/ festivals are you looking forward to or playing at this year?
I seem to have struck gold this year, it kicks off with Homecoming on 2nd May in Scotland, thousands of Scottish clubbers in a field with an amazing backdrop of mountains, need I say more?! On my birthday weekend in July 17/18 I'm playing at Remix @ Matter for Eddy Temple Morris as Dumb Blonde and then the next day the Bug Jam festival at Santapod in the Cream Classics arena with John Kelly, so that's going to be a crazy mix of DJing at a really mega cool underground club and pure old school emotion on the Saturday playing my all time favourite tunes! I've got a couple of Judgement Sunday's in Ibiza lined up in June and August, Global Gathering, Secret Garden Party and a few trips to the US where I've not played for a while.
What have you been up to production wise lately?
My main news, and you're the first people I've officially told, is that I'm starting my own label Siren Trax- I've been working round the clock getting enough material together for it. I wanted more control over when my tracks are released instead of being at the mercy of someone else's schedule - but also wanted the opportunity to get more good music out there and define my own sound a bit more so doing a label made sense to me.
I'm really passionate about it; it's really hard work, especially initially at the start. Even thinking of a name was an ordeal never mind deciding what's good enough to put out! I'll be shouting about it all nearer the time of the first release this summer. In general though, I've been producing a real mixture of styles that I'm enjoying a lot. My other separate project, Dumb Blonde is really picking up this summer gig wise so to coincide I've finished two new tracks (still untitled) and I am working on more including a couple of official remixes of some indie bands that are on the table. I've done some collaborations as well and just finished a remix for The Organ Donors – Devolution (love those guys), they've not heard it yet, I'll play it at Riot to road test it.
Worst and best place that you have ever DJed?
There have been some dodgy ones alright! So many, that every time I get asked this question in an interview I have a different story to tell. One time I was playing a rave in a desert in Denver. The driver got lost and I ended up being four hours late for my set. It was daylight and freezing cold by the time I got there and so windy that it was blowing sand in my eyes but worse still all over the records. There was a mini sand drift building up behind the needle, which kept slowing the records down so you can imagine what that sounded like and mixing was a joke. It was an impossible situation but I just had to keep playing tunes, they'd waited all that time to hear me play. I had to put my records in the bath when I got back to the hotel to get the sand off. One of my favourite gigs was playing The Millennium Dome (before it was the O2) on New Years Eve for Ministry Of Sound. It was amazing, 46,000 people in one arena facing forward going crazy.
What would you be doing if you didn’t have music in your life?
Getting a bit of peace and quiet? Haha! I'd probably be rescuing horses or donkeys or something like that. My whole family are animal crackers.
What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I was the only DJ to be given an award by The British High Commission for Arts in Canada a few years ago, but I'm more proud that I've been able to adapt to different styles of music and make a reasonable success out of it. I'm proud that after over 15 years of DJing I'm lucky enough that people still think I've got what it takes and book me or come to see me play.
