Ticon the matter seriously

Reported by Joanna McEwen / Submitted 25-01-10 20:02

Continuing their run of exciting, fresh events by hosting some ground breaking international acts, next on the list for Halcyon comes Fredrik Gilenholt & Filip Mårdberg better known around the world as Ticon. After a decade on the psy trance scene and with releases on legendary labels such as Dragonfly, Iboga, Phonokol and the all mighty HOM-Mega this duo has without a doubt been at the forefront of your dancing experience – Joanna McEwen spoke to Filip about DJ Ghandi, drinking schnapps and what’s for dinner.

Ticon have been on the wish list of Halcyon's forward thinking, genre busting promoters since matter first agreed to break the mould and host a different type of electronic event back in June.

While Halcyon has booked some more well known acts like Astrix and Infected Mushroom they are equally passionate about the two talented producers from Sweden that have been giving Ticon an unbeatable reputation over the last decade as one of the most innovative yet lush sounding trance acts in the World.

If you only go to one Trance event this year make sure you check the set times and check out Ticon at Halcyon.

When is the new album due?

We are working full time on the 5th Ticon album at the moment and we are hoping it will be released no later than summer 2010.

Describe the new Album in five words.

It - is - not - finished - yet

You went to Japan for New Years Eve. What was it like?

We often go to Japan to play and it’s a totally different place than what we are used to here in Europe (or anywhere else for that matter). The Japanese people have managed in a fantastic way to mix old traditions with high technology, tea ceremonies with techno parties. That's kind of cool!

What has been the biggest track for you in 2009?

Without a doubt 1987. When we made it for the previous album [2am] we didn't think it would be as big as it eventually became. I believe we will play this tune in our live set for quite some time.

Which track by another artist do you wish you had produced?

Oh.. there are so many. Billy Jean by Michael Jackson maybe... haha! If we had to stick with the electronic music scene maybe Cowgirl by Underworld, or Soopertrack by Extrawelt just to name a few.

What influences your music?

As musicians / producers we get influences from all around us. Something in our daily life or some idea we might get in a hotel room in Mexico. A great way to find influence is to stand in front of a speaker stack for many, many hours; after dancing for many hours we often understand music better than if we would just be sitting in the studio, all you need is a kick, snare drum, high hat and a dirty sound. Nothing fancy, just plain dance music. At least that is our approach for the new album we are producing right now.

What is on the agenda for 2010?

First of all to finish the new album. After (and during) that we will be touring around the globe.

Have you played in the UK before?

Yes, the best gig would be at Glade. A wicked festival in our opinion!

What do you do to relax?

Making music is (most of the time) a relaxing thing to do. Exercise has for some reason a relaxing affect on me; the equivalent for Fredrik is beer!

What would you suggest we do if we only had 48 hours in your home country of Sweden?

Depends on where in Sweden you go, but I would suggest you go and see the wonderful nature or spend Midsummer's eve with friends and eat a lot of herring and drink A LOT of schnapps!

Do you have a favourite album from your impressive four album history?

Every album has made its own impression, but if I had to pick one I would choose our first album Rewind. Probably because it was a great time for us back then when we started to realize that we could actually have this as a job!

You have an unlimited budget to create to the greatest event of all time! Who is on the line up and why?

Ghandi would spin vinyl in the main room, Michael Jackson's ghost would be attending the drinks (and the children's area of course). Depeche Mode would hold a seminar on synthesizers from the 80's and we would play live in the toilet. While George Bush would be the cleaning lady.

We are coming around for Dinner! What is on the menu and who is doing the cooking?

You are going to get the classical Swedish dinner; meatballs with mashed potatoes, cream gravy and lingonberry jam I would have to say that I am the master chef in this group. Hopefully I don't have to serve Fredrik dinner all the time after saying that!

Vodka or JD?

Both please.

Now that’s what you call a party! Halcyon in only 2 events has achieved what it would normally take years to do….we sold out in advance and delivered a party that is going to be talked about for a long time to come! The atmosphere, the design, the energy, the music was simply out of this world!!

It’s hard to follow on from something like that and it’s our determination to showcase the best and drive this event forward in 2010.

For our first showcase event of 2010 we are extremely proud to present…

Hallucinogen Live
Shpongle DJ set

Simon Posford is Hallucinogen and one half of mega psy band Shpongle. He is the twisted lone deranger that warped a generation. To be honest he needs no introduction, he's been ravaging dance floors and opening minds for years. He has two studio albums under this name but countless other equally brilliant releases on Twisted Records. This man is probably responsible for over half of the best psychedelic releases ever. Hallucinogen's debut album 'twisted', released in 1995, set the standard for the then burgeoning trance scene, showing him to be a true pioneer and master of his art.

And that’s not all…we will be announcing further very special headline artists to what is already a very exciting event.

Our main room acts are supported by our team of Halcyon residents: Dejavoo Live, Phil Lankester and Liquid Ross.

Halcyon will also be the stage to launch the 2nd artist album from residents Dejavoo.. “DEJAVOO....THE REMIXES” coming out on Transient Records.
