Nick Sentience interviewed: ahead of the launch of his new album 'SYNCRONIZED'

Reported by Agnes Klos / Submitted 31-05-11 19:53

Nick Sentience shot to fame at an early age of 21 when he slammed into the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll at number 74. Since then he has never looked back. The subsequent success took him on a 10 year tour of the world’s most famous super clubs across more than 25 different countries. Having reached a decade at the top levels of international dance and club music, Nick Sentience is one of the most in demand and biggest selling producers and DJs in the world. His recent productions have drawn the attention and support of some of the biggest names in the industry. Having just completed his third artist album 'Syncronized', Agnes Klos talks to Nick ahead of the album preview at June Babies on Saturday, 4th June.

As we are fast approaching the launch date of his new album, Monday 6th June, I thought we should dig a bit deeper into the mind of the man that has produced so many of the past, present and future anthems that are tearing up festivals and dancefloors across the globe.

Nick's a very familiar and influential figure to the people of HarderFaster. He's been a featured artist on here a number of times launching previous albums, his own label and club events as well as being as active member of the HarderFaster community and even won runner up for thread of the year.

Hi Nick, thank you for finding time in your busy schedule to answer some questions for HarderFaster. Tell us more about your new album 'Syncronized'. There are a number of big tracks already creating dance floor frenzies and have rocked some of the biggest festivals and clubs across the globe including ASOT, Trance Energy, Gatecrasher, Creamfields, GodsKitchen, Cream, Amnesia, Judgement Sundays, Privilege, Ministry of Sound, and have received support from some of the worlds most respected DJs including Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buuren, Simon Patterson, John O'Callaghan, John Askew, Ali & Fila, Paul Webster, Jordan Suckley, Signum, Ben Nicky, Mark Sherry, Brian Kearney and many more. That is quite a diverse range of support. Tell us more about the styles on the album, the ethos behind it and what we can expect?

I have always been a big fan of many genres of dance/electronic music, which is reflected in my studio work and productions. I like different styles of breaks, psy, tech trance and even very chilled out beats. This album has it all. I hope it surprises some people who think I just do harder music or only remember some of my older tracks from my early 2000 era when I first hit the clubs.

What do you use for inspiration when putting together an album? Are there any key artists, events or locations that inspire you?

It could be anything from my early rave days in the 90's when I first discovered Prodigy, Carl Cox and all the classics, or it could be some very modern psytrance and tech trance like Zen Mechanics, Sonic Species, Astrix, Simon Patterson, ASOT, etc; which has a very futuristic production or maybe even something like Deadmau5 or dubsteb/drum'n'bass like Pendulum. I'm quite open minded.

While producing, which kit and software do you use? And are you a vinyl, CDJ or laptop man when it comes to performances? Do you play keyboards? How do you do a live DJ set?

I'm a bit of everything at the moment, some modern kit like a Mac Pro with Logic 9 and a bunch of VST's and some outboard like the new Roland Gaia, Dave Smith Mopho and a classic with the Virus TI. A mixture of new technology with some funky old samplers drum machines and synths is a good way to go I think. Just using a computer and mouse with endless presets can be good for speed and getting things going fast, but also quite dull and not musical. Real kit makes you use your imagination I believe and is designed to make music, not like a computer which can do music, but was designed for an office.

How do you find a compromise between the two roles; a DJ and producer? Do you have a preference?

I have always made most of my music for the dance floor so DJing and making tracks for DJs has always been a big part of what I do. I also do a live set which is all my own material so I chop the tracks up and mix them with visuals live. I do some tracks for listening to, but mostly it is all about the energy of the dance floor.

Tell us about your new Live Set that you are just about to take out to the clubs and festivals round the world, how is it put together?

It is basically a lot of the new music from the album which is revamped and chopped up in Ableton. Also, I have VJ software and a video mixer to mix my 3D graphics to go along with the music. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it will develop as I will be constantly evolving the set as I test it out more and then go back to the studio to add things to it.

In the past you have performed as a regular DJ and Live Act at some of the most legendary parties around the globe. Which of your gigs left the biggest mark in your memory?

I have loved travelling and it has been a great time for me. I think Tokyo stands out to me as it's somewhere very different and exciting.

Taking your sound around the world means trips to diverse countries such as Japan, Argentina, Ibiza, and Holland. What is it like to play there? Are the clubs, clubbers and decor any different from what we are used to in the UK?

It's slightly different but I've had such a good time in most countries that really it’s all just about positive people and high energy dancefloors.

Do you remember the genre that you first fell in love with? How did that first passion influence your decision to become a DJ/producer?

I was an early Rave fan from 1992, although I was still at school and too young to go to the parties, I listened to the tapes non-stop and collected flyers until I got my first decks and then studio.

What else have you got planned for 2011?

I have just completed a remix for Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label of Man With No Name 'Teleport' and there will be all the new singles coming out of the album with some very special remixes that I will reveal very soon.

Thank you for your time Nick, it was an immense pleasure talking to you.

Thanks Agnes - looking forward to catching everyone down at Babies on the 4th!
