Keeping psy trance in the family with Sub6

When Golan and Ohad Aharony first started making music together in 1999, who’d have thought they’d go on to become one of the world’s top psy trance acts? But their debut album Who Needs Love Songs, released in 2004, certainly cemented their spot, while this year’s techier This Ain’t No Disco highlights their versatility. In the meantime they’ve played at festivals from Sweden to South Africa and had their tracks remixed by psy trance heavyweights like GMS, Wrecked Machines and Ticon. With the brothers touching down for a rare live set at the HOMmega and Mutagen Records Showcase at Halcyon at The Coronet over the August bank holiday weekend, where they'll be headlining the HOMmega main room alongside Astrix, Ace Ventura, Pixel, Black & White, Dejavoo, Libra9, Zeus and Andi Leppard b2b Matt Loraine, we thought it was definitely time they made their HarderFaster debut…
You started making music together in 1999. What inspired you to start working together and playing and producing music?
We always had a passion for music. It was natural for us to start working together because we are brothers. Our musical background is almost identical, and sometimes we understand each other blindly.
As brothers, were you classically trained as kids? Or did you get into music through the dance scene?
Our musical education came mostly from home. Our older sister had a large record collection and that’s where it all started. Years later we went to college and studied sound design. We didn’t think that we’d have such a career as electronic musicians, but it happened and we are happy about it.
What did your parents think of you becoming DJs and producers? Do they ever nag you to get a real job? Or do you have ‘real jobs’ and is this more of a hobby for you?
Actually our parents helped us a lot in the beginning, but they do nag from time to time hehe…
Music is a way of life for us. Everything we do is related to the music business. Other then Sub6 we are involved in other projects as external producers. We also do studio mixing and mastering.
Who or what are your biggest musical influences?
Leftfield, Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and Massive Attack, to name a few.
You’ve been with HOMmega Records since you started releasing music. When did you first meet Eyal and get involved with HOMmega and how did it all come about?
The first time we met with Eyal was in 2001. Our friend DJ Goblin (Psysex) told him about us. Nothing really came out of that first meeting, he said we needed to work some more and get better results. We got back to him after few months and then he decided to release our first track ‘To Experience’. It was funny because it was released in a compilation called ‘Full On Vol. 6’ and it was a slow and heavy track, so different than the other tracks on the compilation. But it drew a lot of attention and so we started gigging right after releasing our first track. I guess we had an easy start…
You’ve played at gigs all over the world, from Australia to Austria and from Brixton’s Psychedelic Academy to Tribe in Brazil. Do you have a favourite party or festival that you’ve played at? And is there anywhere that you haven’t played yet that you really want to play?
There were so many, but lately we remember Soulvision Festival 2011 in Brazil, a deep mud rainy event that turned out to be a euphoric and emotional old school experience. We played three times at Brixton academy but we especially remember the gig from 2006. We played live with MC Jah-natan and it was a real blast!
Places we want to play? China, we’ve never been there.
Technology has come ahead in leaps and bounds, changing the way we play, produce, promote and distribute music. How has this effected what you do the most since you started out? Overall, do you think the pros outweigh the cons?
It's a good question that we can’t easily answer. We think technological changes are reflected mainly in the way we distribute music, promote it and consume it.
Technological change did not affect dramatically the way we create music in the studio. Writing music will always be the same; technology can maybe help in making it more comfortable. I think in recent years a significant difference is that the option to create music has become cheap and available. Every laptop can be a basis for a home studio in a bedroom, and you can do wonderful things with it.
The advantage is that a lot of talented people who could not buy expensive equipment can now create high-level music. The downside is that there is a lot more music in general. Naturally much of this music is not so good…
You’ve recently released a new EP, ‘This Ain’t No Disco’, collaborating with GMS and Animalis as well as doing a Liquid Soul remix. Did you actually work in the studio with GMS and Animalis, or was it more of an internet collaboration?
It was more of an internet collaboration. It’s the first time we did such a thing and it was a good experience. We prefer sitting together in studio but sometimes it is not possible. It’s all about the people you work with. If you like their style of music you don’t really have to sit together in studio.
The Sub6 and Freedom Fighters remix of Liquid Soul’s ‘Hypnotic Energy’ is driving tech trance and quite different to your usual full-on psy trance sound. Is this a direction you can see yourselves going in more in the future?
The ‘Hypnotic Energy’ remix is our favourite track at the moment. We do think that the atmosphere of that track is a little different then most of the Sub6 tracks because it’s a remix. We like the original track and we tried to preserve its original energy, but we think that the sound production is pretty typical to our music.
We always try to be open to new directions, but we can’t really know what our direction will be in another year or two. Things are very dynamic because we are constantly influenced by music and everyday life.

What advice do you have for up-and-coming DJs and producers who want to make it in the music industry?
Don’t try to imitate other artists. Try to find your “twist” right from the start. Listen to all different kinds of music.
Ahh and don’t get addicted to Facebook, it won’t make you a better artist no matter how many friends/fans you will have.
You’re playing a live set at the HOMmega and Mutagen Records Showcase at the Coronet on Friday 26th August — your first UK set in quite a while. Are you looking forward to coming back to London? Why should people reading this who’ve never heard you play before come along and check you out?
Looking forward is an understatement. London is the best place to play and we miss the English crowd. We are not really good at “selling” our music in words — we think our music speaks for itself. You can check it out here

This will be first time Astrix is in the UK since November 2010 and the first psy event in over two years at this incredible venue. Joining Astrix in the main room to celebrate the launch of HOMmega’s new compilation ISRAliens Vol. 6 we have special guests Pixel, Ace Ventura, Sub6 and Black & White.
