Logic Bomb prepare to detonate their new album at Elixir of Life

When Jonas Pettersson and Johan Krafft started studying to become computer engineers, they had no idea that they were going to end up using their skills for something far more creative than crunching code. But their graduation in the mid-’90s coincided with a new type of dance music being brought back from the golden beaches of Goa to parties held in the mystic forests of their homeland of Sweden, which they became obsessed with. Forming Logic Bomb in 1998, the massive success of their debut album Headware in 2000 on Spiral Trax closely followed by Unlimited in 2002 on TIP World helped define a whole new sub-genre of psychedelic trance, “scando-trance”. Back in London to launch their fourth album The Grid at the phenomenal Elixir of Life this Saturday 1st October, HarderFaster finally made contact with two of the greatest geeks in psy trance…
You’re both qualified as computer engineers. When you first started studying computers did you ever think you’d end up using them to produce music?
Johan: In the early days when ZX81 was state of the art, I never thought of computers as a future resource of music creation. But with the Amiga and the trackers that were developed, a new era took place and the game changed forever.
You formed Logic Bomb in 1998. What made you decide to start playing and producing music together?
Jonas: At that time we were just a couple of friends that loved that kind of new sounding music, and we both had experience of making music on the Amiga and in trackers. So naturally we started experimenting together. As time went by we slowly started building up the first studio. Since we got a really good response from the music we made, it inspired us to continue.
You’re considered founders of the “scando-trance” sound. For those new to psy trance, what’s “scando-trance” and how would you describe Logic Bomb’s music?
Johan: To me, “scando-trance” would be a sub-genre of psy trance, but it is quite hard to define the actual sound and what’s unique about it. I guess it’s a specific feeling towards the music.
With three awesome albums under your belts — ‘Headware’ (2000), ‘Unlimited’ (2002) and ‘Sonic Algebra’ (2007) — and very soon a fourth, has your music changed and evolved much over the years?
Jonas: We have always tried to keep the “Logic Bomb sound” in our creations. I believe the biggest change is in the quality of the production. Still after almost 15 years of making music, we keep learning new things.
You’re considered some of the pioneers of psy trance and have inspired and influenced a huge number of people all over the world. Who or what has inspired or influenced you the most over the years? And now?
Johan: In regards to psychedelic trance, many different artists. The X-Dream sounds were very special. Tsuyoshi Suzuki’s work, Simon Posford’s, Orichalcum… etc.
Please tell us a bit about your new album. Does it have a concept or a theme, or is it more of a collection of your latest tracks? Will it include any of the prog tracks you’ve been working on?
Jonas: The new album entitled ‘The Grid’ is more a collection of our latest work. It will include one of the more progressive tracks you mentioned, but mainly it contains full on blasting music. There will also be a remix we made of ‘Sonic Algebra’ there that we are really happy with. You’ll also find a chill out track on the album, which is a first for us.
Since you started out in 1998 the technology used to make music has also changed considerably and you’ve recently made the leap from PC to Mac. What software and hardware are you using in the studio at the moment and what’s your current favourite toy?
Johan: We’re mainly working with Logic Pro now. The absolute favourite piece of hardware is for both Jonas and me the Clavia Nord Modular. That’s like a constant, I use it all the time. There is so much good software out now so it is hard to choose a specific one, but I really dig the Spectrasonics stuff.
Jonas: Nowadays when we don’t use that much outboard stuff, besides the Nord Modular and a couple of other pieces of hardware, we tend to focus much more on the production techniques of the workflow. For example, this album is the first album we are writing without an analogue mixing desk. This is of course a new thing for us that makes the whole process tend to focus much more on the software rather than the hardware. One great advantage when writing without an analogue desk is that we can send project files to each other and work on one track at two different studios.
To mention a favourite software plugin I must say that Sylenth from Lennar Digital has been frequently used on this album. Awesome sounding software.
You’ve been testing out the new material for your album at festivals over summer. Which events did you enjoy the most and how was your new music received? Were there any responses that made you go back to the studio and make significant changes?
Jonas: We had the opportunity to try out a great deal of new tracks at several of the big festivals this year. Overall we got a very good response, IMHO.
What have been the highlights of your musical career so far? And is there anything you haven’t done yet that you still really want to do?
Johan: Personally I would like to improve my piano playing skills, and focus towards baroque music. I’d also like to make more progressive trance and electro.
Jonas: I think the highlight so far actually was the Ozora Festival this year. 25,000 people in total bliss! Amazing!!

If you could insert a malicious code into any programme in the world, what would it be?
Johan: Hohoho… I would alter the code in the major credit card companies and replace all plus-functions with minus-functions!
Speaking of parties, you’re launching your new album in London at the Elixir of Life this Saturday night, where you’re headlining alongside some of the biggest names in dance music including System 7, the Orb, Shpongle and Banco de Gaia. Have you got your set completely pre-planned, or will you wait and see what the crowd is looking up for on the night? And is there anyone else on the line-up whose set you’re hoping to catch?
Jonas: The set is partly pre-planned. It will be set 80% the day of the performance. And then some last minute panic changes of course before we start.
I really hope we have the time to catch the Orb. That would be awesome. That music really inspired us back in the days.
What else do you have on for the rest of 2011? And beyond?
Jonas: It looks like we’ll be heading for South America for the end of the year for Universo Paralello on New Year’s Eve and we might perform in Chile also in December. Nothing is set 100%.
