A strong Case of Dejavoo.

When you get two well respected DJs and producers from the psy-trance scene come together and look to create a sound combining elements from many other electronic music genres you’re in no doubt there’ll be something there you recognise, it’ll be new but familiar, perhaps a feeling of Dejavoo. Kristian and Francesco spill the beans.

So, tell us about your musical background, I know you have a deep affinity for the 80’s from some of our multiple geek out sessions on the topic but what other musical styles have formed your broad taste and deep appreciation of music.

Kristian: Yes, I’ve been through so many musical movements. Apart from 80’s new wave/new romantic I am into punk, rock/hard rock, prog rock, goth (1st wave), metal, grunge, indie (mainly the Manchester thing in the 90’s Stone Roses etc.) and dance music from the early rave scene up to Psychedelic Trance.

Francesco: My first love was metal and thrash, back in the 80’s I was a kid and radio music was actually good new wave and new romantic was and still is cutting edge somehow, music with integrity and soul not like the crap that goes on today. A big influence from the past in my sound still are artists like Moroder, Daft Punk, The Prodigy, Depeche Mode etc

What was the last album you bought that was not electronic, and tell me some of your favourite albums of all time?

Kristain: Last album I bought Kasabian 40-13. In terms of favourite album, Jesus! Robin, that’s a hard one. The list would be too long. I guess, if I have to mention a few fave all timers: Simple Minds - Live in the City of Light, U2 - The Joshua Tree, Rush - Power Windows or Grace Under Pressure, Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion, Sisters of Mercy - Floodland, Talk Talk - Remixed, The Stone Roses - 2nd Coming, Pearl Jam – 10.

Francesco: The last non-electronic album I bought was probably Ennio Morricone, the complete edition. Basically 15 CDs of all Ennio’s finest work without a doubt the best composer of this century. Some of my favourite albums of all time are: Prodigy - The Fat of the Land, Pink Floyd - The Wall, Daft Punk - Homework, Metallica – Black Album, Iron Maiden - Powerslave, Slayer - Season in the Abyss, Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against the Machine, also most Moroder stuff (Singles and film scores mainly).

What is the best live concert/gig you have been to not related to the rave scene?

Kristian: Arrgh! You make things hard for me. Been to so many I guess Stone Roses last year in Finsbury park stands out causes I usually hate bands that are not tight live or improvise too much, but The Roses (Especially Ian Brown) are known for being bad live, but here it didn't matter the vibe in the crowd was amazing. It was like a massive celebration of that culture which is so loved in the UK. It reminded me of a massive rave in the 90’s. Also the crowd helped Ian Brown as they sang out loud every song, so he had an easy night I guess LOL. Everyone was connected on the floor.

Franceco: Probably Roger Waters/Pink Floyd - The Wall, such a historic and monumental album, live it sounded like a CD and their sound scape was immense, unreal.

You guys seem to have played at some of the most known global parties and festivals. What’s been your favourite and is there somewhere you have yet to play that is on your wish list?

Kristian: There are too many festivals and parties to choose one IMO. I was blown away playing in the middle of the dunes in the Sahara Desert, in a Red Indian Reservation in California and in the jungle in Panama, which was in terms of locations . . . WOW. Also Antiworld at Brixton Academy in London, such a symbolic venue.

Francesco: If I have to pick one Probably will be BOOM 2010, we had a killer slot and all our friends were there in the floor dancing. The Californian gig was also very special.

You’re quite busy and travel a lot, just a few weekends ago didn’t you have 3 gigs including 8 flights in total? This doesn’t seem terribly uncommon for you. If you are so frequently in airports and on planes, what is in your essential travel kit?

Kristian. Laptop with downloaded movies or series (at moment I have one series called ‘The Corner’, it’s an off shoot from the Wire), and music in my player of course.

Francesco: Laptop, iPad socks, pants, a few T-shirts and a jacket, I tend to sleep a lot on the plane or I watch stuff or read on my iPad.

How and when did you two meet and what made you decide to make a project together? What do you both bring differently to the studio?

Kristian: We met at a party called ‘Chichime’ in London. Fran does the production and I sat with him checking the work and arguing with him LOL. Also as a DJ I bring in the latest vibes and Fran puts pen to paper.

Francesco: Kristian was running a successful night called Chichime, I started DJing for his party, after few years behind the decks got into production, he was already an established DJ so it made sense to join our skills and start a project. Basically I write and produce the music then we sit together and work out what we like what to keep etc, Kristian is always up to date with the latest trends in the scene, I mainly follow alternative genres so I guess the combination is good.

Dejavoo has been releasing off and on together now for 8 yrs. What are a couple of your favourite tracks that will always rock the dance floor?

Kristian: The X-Noize remix we made called Gain Control, and Cyclone for me.

Francesc: The Long Run, Ejekt High Robot (Dejavoo RMX)

Do you find collaborating to be a bit more creative in ways? It can give a new energy add perspective to the music you make. Is there any other artists you two would like to collaborate with?

Kristian: Yes of course two minds are better than one especially as I DJ a lot and can bring in the latest sounds. Would love to work outside the Trance scene with The Prodigy or Georgio Moroder
(dream on LOL).

Francesco: As Dejavoo I do the writing , I tend to come up with lots of loops and then with Kristian we do all the cleaning and finalization, endless debates on what we like and dislike, whatever we agree than moves forward. I’d love to sit with Deadmau5 and watch him crafting his sound. Production wise he is the best in dance music today.

Did you go to old ‘Return to the Source’ events and how did you come to know Chris Deckker both personally and professionally?

Kristian: Yes I did I think the first ever Psy Trance event I went to was RTTS, I did meet Chris Decker many years ago in Camden, awesome guy.

Francesco: No it was before my days

Have you been part of many past ‘Earthdance’ events globally? If so what/where has been your most memorable experience?

Kristian: Yes I use to go as a punter to the London ones, and then I played at the event in Nottingham, Zurich, London and Brighton.

Francesco: The most memorable ones for me were Zurich and Nottingham

If you can pass on one sentiment of heartfelt peace to your fans, what would that be?

Kristian: Free Tibet.

Francesco: Stop fighting and start helping each other as we all live under the same sky.

Thank you for your time with me guys... and we shall see you on the dance floor on 20 Sept @ Electric Brixton!

PLEASURE!
