To say Miss C is multi-talented would be an understatement! Her impressive jam-packed career has seen her DJ, MC, promote, act and even dabble in comedy – and that’s just for starters! It would almost be quicker to list the things that she hasn’t done. Her talent and hard work have also brought her a residency at Mr.C’s kick ass party Superfreq, and this Saturday sees the return of their extra special Superfreq Grande event! So what better time to have a chinwag?
What is your earliest memory of music?
My first memories would probably be when I was a very small child, around 3-4 years old. We lived with the KLF in Stockwell, and they had a club set up in the basement where they would put on parties and lots of legendary DJs would play and hang out there. People like the Orb, Adamski, Colin Dale, Moody Boys, Boy George and many more were regular visitors.
Where were you born and did your childhood influence your artistic musical journey?
I was born in Swansea (Wales) but we moved to Brixton in the early 80’s and all of my family were musical - my stepfather was a music engineer and sound man, and my mum was in a band. We also lived with the KLF for a few years, so I was surrounded by many talented musicians and constantly being inspired by them, even if I wasn’t aware of it at the time.
How did you discover electronic dance music?
Despite growing up around some of the key players of dance music I rebelled against it at first; it was my parents’ music and nobody wants to like that! I was listening to Hip-Hop, Reggae, Soul and RNB mainly. It was in my very early teens where I discovered Jungle and MCing. I loved the Reggae influences, so that drew me in, and I started MCing at lots of underground Jungle events in South London around 1997. Then I moved on to the garage scene for a short time (97-99) before finding House music again in my late teens early 20s, and the rest is history!
You are also a super talented MC, how did you get into this?
I always wanted to sing but I was always too afraid to get it wrong, so MCing felt a bit safer on this account. Also, I realised that there were hardly any female MCs at that time which gave me the confidence to show the boys that us girls could do it too. After MCing for 10 years I decided I wanted to learn to DJ so I could do both (MC and DJ) at the same time. But this never really worked out, as I discovered I really needed to focus on one at a time, otherwise the other could suffer.
Do you ever suffer from stage fright?
Not so much stage fright but I can definitely feel the butterflies. Many years ago I trained my brain into thinking that the nervous feeling was in fact excitement (as they feel the same) and it became a lot easier to deal with.
You are a resident for Mr.C’s legendary party Superfreq. How did this come about?
I’ve known Mr.C for many years, he booked me to play at Superfreq back in 2019 and I obviously got stuck right in! Stick in, meaning I sold tickets, I got lots of people down to the venue, I promoted it to the hills and brought my A game. With this being everything a promoter wants from an artist, Mr.C got me onboard to help co-promote for this London shows and I’ve been a resident ever since.
Tell us about the super exciting upcoming Superfreq Grande party on 16th September
Superfreq. Grande at LDN East is the second event we’ve done there this year, and we have a fantastic line-up of International DJs in store for it!
Raxon hailing from Barcelona
The one and only LIVE Techno wizard Saytek
Our very own David Scuba all the way from California
London’s favourite Alexi Delano over from Sweden
The fabulous up and coming Heaven-Lee from Bristol
The boss man himself Mr.C
And then there’s me of course, Miss C
The last Superfreq Grande we did at LDN East was out of this world amazing! Not only do we LOVE a day party, but there is something very special about dancing outside to amazing music with the most wonderfully friendly freqs!
Tickets are still available on Skiddle, if any last-minute party people would like to join us.
What’s one of your biggest achievements in life?
That’s a tough one, but I would have to say having my son.
Then it would be finding my passions and being able to make a living from it for over 20 years.
Everything from promoting and running my own events, DJing, hosting events (from corporate to the underground), MCing, singing, song writing, acting, comedy, event management, mentoring and creating art and comedy videos.
What’s one of your most memorable parties/gig & why?
I’ve played some absolute corkers so it’s tough to choose one, but I guess playing the Opulent Temple at Burning man. MCing to 7000 people in the desert whilst in a huge metal egg that shoots out fire from the top of it when the bass drops was a buzz! Then DJing in a huge cat’s mouth chiselled into the rock at Samsara (KP), playing while looking out over the sea at Eden and having a whole beach for a private party of friends for around 100 people for Magic Beach all over on Koh Phangan in Thailand. To name a few…
What is your biggest love after family, friends, and music?
Comedy. I have played with the idea of doing stand-up. Lots of my friends keep telling me I should. I’ve done bits of comedy over the years, but nothing major. I did do some accidental stand up once while playing a gig with one of the bands I was in many moons ago. The equipment decided to stop working apart from my mic so I proceeded to waffle on and do accents to which the crowd seemed to enjoy. Maybe they were being kind, but a fair few of them did say that I should do more of that. So, it couldn’t have been too bad. Lol!
I also played a bride in a short comedy movie called ‘The Bride, The Groom and His Package’ on Vimeo.
What’s on the horizon for you, gigs/releases/ambitions/hopes/dreams?
There’s always lots going on with Superfreq We have 16th of September at LDN East, events happening all over in the US (NYC & LA) and we are also off to do Superfreq in Koh Phangan in January and February 2024 which I’m really looking forward to!
But I also want to get back into making more music. I feel I’ve been caught up with the business side of things such as promotion and socials rather than the music, which I’m missing. So, I want to make a lot more music in the next few months too if I can squeeze it in.
Lastly, if you could have one superpower, what would it be?
The power to heal others, as well as myself.
