The man needs no introduction. Undoubtedly one of hard dance's biggest production talents, Ilogik brings us 'One Time' on his acclaimed Elasticman label. So are we in for the usual slice of madness? I decided to find out.
Before getting stuck into the two mixes, it's worth giving mention to the artwork on the cover. some nice design work that really looks pretty impressive. Not that this effects the tune in any way but still deserved of some appreciation.
The original mix kicks off with the usual, fast paced energy we've come to expect, using a deep kickdrum and gradually introducing some neat percussion and groovy vocal samples before the first break. A long drumroll and vocal burst invites the pumping bassline into the fray. The percussion and samples are again introduced progressively as the tune builds towards the main breakdown, in which the uplifting undertones are quickly joined by a manic synth arrangement which runs riot on your eardrums. The melody is very catchy and builds quickly before the short drumroll and vocal loop kick the bassline and percussion back into the mix to give a blinding hard trance effort which really moves your entire body.
There's planty of filters and digital effects, and by the end of the tune the vocal loop has managed to infect you brain and it sticks! Not quite tough enough to contend for a 'Hard As Nails' spot, but more than enough action to survive in the average hard dj's box. especially those who lean towards a trance element to their tunes.
The Guy McAffer offering is much more of a techno affair. Starting with a simple, tough kickdrum and some basic percussion, with cool effects being added as the tune progresses. This is much more of a constant onslaught which relentlessly provides wave after wave of thunderous beats and clever percussion broken only by an occassional vocal interlude or fill which work fantastically to structure the mix and devide the tune into tidy sections, so to speak. This mix is also more diverse than the original in that it would sound equally good at -1 or +7 on the pitch fader so would fit into a number of different styles. With this mix, it's easy to see why Guy has been receiving such good press. A very solid prodction performance.
Overall a polished release from Ilogik. This would slot nicely into some prime time sets in clubland and proves that elasticman definitely have what it takes to be heaveyweight contenders, and ruff it up with the best of em'. QUALITY STUFF!!!!!
