» As The Rush Comes (As The Break Comes - Lucky 7 Breaks Mix)

Reviewed by scottie-nye / Submitted 22-12-03 11:44

Label: N/A (Bootleg)
Format: 12" Vinyl
Genre: Breakbeat/Trance/Prog

Every now and then, a track comes along that divides opinion completely - people either love it or hate it, and Motorcycle - As the Rush Comes, is one of those tracks. The debut single by "band" members Dave Dresden, Josh Gabriel, and vocalist Jes, has been making waves across the clubbing community for some time now, and with its full (and somewhat belated) UK release due very soon, complemented with 2 additional mixes (Above & Beyond and Gabriel & Dresden chillout mix), I figured I would try and avoid the bandwagon (as usual) and check out this bootleg breaks mix which has been doing the rounds as of late.....

The first thing to mention is that despite being a bootleg, the sound quality is very good, and the vinyl is of a decent quality, something which is often quite rare when it comes to bootleg tracks. But onto the actual track itself.....

Proceedings are started off with a 4 bar percussive intro, before the bassline kicks in. Lucky 7 have taken a quite progressive approach to this track, and the bassline is very deep, driving and moody, with the broken rhythm giving a very emotive feel to the whole track. Not being very familiar with the either mix from the original release, I am not really in a position to compare this track with either of them - however, this mix has been stripped back to the bare bones and is very minimal - it is all about the bassline. The vocal is introduced in the first break, and simply adds more depth and emotion to proceedings, the bassline kicks back in and the result is pure, unadulterated bliss. The vocal is then stripped back out, before we enter a second break, and then back in with the vocal and bassline before the 4 loop outro.

As I said before, this is quite a minimal track, there are no big strings or melodies, and it doesnt really do a huge amount. But it works brilliantly - pure drug music. I can see this track being used in a warm up set, or in a deeper peak time trance set, to be honest it is such a good track it doesnt matter when you play it, the reaction from the crowd is always going to be huge.

Breakbeat trance has had a bit of a resurgence of late - Wrecked Angle have recently done a stunning remix of the seminal Chakra track "I Am", and there is also a fine bootleg breaks mix of another classic trance track, Jam & Spoons's - "Stella". Being very new to the breakbeat sound, tracks like this are a good way of learning about a new sound, and the intricacy's of mixing them together and with 4/4 trance, without getting bogged down in a muddle of new labels, artists and sounds, which is always the daunting thing when you adventure in new territory genre wise.

So, to sum up, a lovely version of a track which was, is and will be huge in 2004, and a nice alternative, if, like me you dont like playing the same stuff as the "Big 3".

If you would like me to review your track, please email me on dj_scottie_nye@hotmail.com Thumbs up

What a truly bizzare set of principles you have Scottie! Surely the fact that the "big 3" play it is irrelevant? All that matters is that it is a good tune?

End of!

hehe bizarre they may be, but I dont like playing the same music as everyone else any more...if I play out, then I want people to hear fresh music, be it golden oldies, or new gems, not the stuff they hear on Judge Jules radio show every saturday.

From: Shaun on 22nd Dec 2003 14:32.59
So therefore it IS irrelevant how good the tune is to you? If your fav tune in the world was played by Jules, PVD, AVB, you would then stop playing it??????

Weird!

no, but if I am buying new tunes, then I try and buh stuff that I havent heard of before, and that other people arent playing - I want my sound to be as different from other DJ's as possible. It's not that I am refusing to buy tunes purely on the basis that PVD et al are all caning them, but more due to the fact that if they are caning them, it is likely that half the trance bedroom dj's are also playing it. do you see what I mean?

I've had this tune for ages and it's been played out already mate Wink

and "sunset" was one of Jules' biggest tunes of the year. He played it on his radio show everyweek for about 2 months Wink

I sort of c where you're coming from scottie..... I just play the tunes I love the most. I don't care who else is playing them. Being different from other DJ's isn't all about playing different stuff. for me it's about playing them in a more creative way. I always experiment with all my tunes, old & new to find new ways of crowd pleasing. cool review though mate.!

obviously, some tunes I buy will also be played by the big dj's - they obviously have good taste....:-)

as for sunset, well, its one of those tunes isnt it - even Jules playing it cant bring it down!! however, I dont listen to judge jules radio show so I wouldnt have known. only person I have heard play it is steve blake and it tore the trance room at Tilt apart.

The most over-rated tune of 2003. How this was voted one of the best tunes of 2003 is beyond me. Just because the top DJ's play it, doesn't make it a good tune. But each to their own.

'Most Over rated tune of 2003'??? The mind boggles..... that tune is pure genious. The productiuon is amazing and has created a sub genre in preogressive/trance in my opinion.

Pure Genius ? How exactly ? I dont deny that the production of the tune is excellent, but the tune itself IMO is nothing special.
